Nonlinear propagation of ultraslow pulses in media with electromagnetically induced transparency.

The nonlinear behavior of a probe pulse propagating in a medium with electromagnetically induced transparency is studied both numerically and analytically. A new type of nonlinear wave equation is proposed in which the noninstantaneous response of nonlinear polarization is treated properly. The resulting nonlinear behavior of the propagating probe pulse is shown to be fundamentally different from that predicted by the simple nonlinear Schrödinger-like wave equation that considers only instantaneous Kerr nonlinearity.

Correlation and response functions with non-Markovian dissipation: a reduced Liouville-space theory.

Based on a recently developed quantum dissipation formulation [R. X. Xu and Y. J. Yan, J. Chem. Phys. 116, 9196 (2002)], we present a reduced Liouville-space approach to evaluate the response and correlation functions of dissipative systems. The weak system-bath interaction is treated properly for its effects on the initial state, the evolution, and the correlation between coherent driving and non-Markovian dissipation. Numerical demonstration shows this correlated effect cannot be neglected even in the calculation of linear response quantities that do not explicitly depend on external fields. Highlighted in this paper is also the proper choice of theory among various formulations in the weak system-bath interaction regime.

Spontaneous relaxation of a charge qubit under electrical measurement.

In this work we first derive a generalized conditional master equation for quantum measurement by a mesoscopic detector, then study the readout characteristics of qubit measurement where a number of remarkable new features are found. The work would, in particular, highlight the qubit spontaneous relaxation effect induced by the measurement itself rather than an external thermal bath.

Exact quantum master equation via the calculus on path integrals.

An exact quantum master equation formalism is constructed for the efficient evaluation of quantum non-Markovian dissipation beyond the weak system-bath interaction regime in the presence of time-dependent external field. A novel truncation scheme is further proposed and compared with other approaches to close the resulting hierarchically coupled equations of motion. The interplay between system-bath interaction strength, non-Markovian property, and required level of hierarchy is also demonstrated with the aid of simple spin-boson systems.

Quantum mechanics of dissipative systems.

Quantum dissipation involves both energy relaxation and decoherence, leading toward quantum thermal equilibrium. There are several theoretical prescriptions of quantum dissipation but none of them is simple enough to be treated exactly in real applications. As a result, formulations in different prescriptions are practically used with different approximation schemes. This review examines both theoretical and application aspects on various perturbative formulations, especially those that are exact up to second-order but nonequivalent in high-order system-bath coupling contributions. Discrimination is made in favor of an unconventional formulation that in a sense combines the merits of both the conventional time-local and memory-kernel prescriptions, where the latter is least favorite in terms of the applicability range of parameters for system-bath coupling, non-Markovian, and temperature. Also highlighted is the importance of correlated driving and dissipation effects, not only on the dynamics under strong external field driving, but also in the calculation of field-free correlation and response functions.

Optimal control of quantum non-Markovian dissipation: reduced Liouville-space theory.

An optimal control theory for open quantum systems is constructed containing non-Markovian dissipation manipulated by an external control field. The control theory is developed based on a novel quantum dissipation formulation that treats both the initial canonical ensemble and the subsequent reduced control dynamics. An associated scheme of backward propagation is presented, allowing the efficient evaluation of general optimal control problems. As an illustration, the control theory is applied to the vibration of the hydrogen fluoride molecule embedded in a non-Markovian dissipative medium. The importance of control-dissipation correlation is evident in the results.

Evaluation of holonomic quantum computation: adiabatic versus nonadiabatic.

Based on the analytical solution to the time-dependent Schrödinger equations, we evaluate the holonomic quantum computation beyond the adiabatic limit. Besides providing rigorous confirmation of the geometrical prediction of holonomies, the present dynamical resolution offers also a practical means to study the nonadiabaticity induced effects for the universal qubit operations.
