Kinetic analysis of beer primary fermentation using yeast cells immobilized by ceramic support adsorption and alginate gel entrapment.

Yeast cells were immobilized by absorption onto porous ceramic support and evaluated for continuous beer primary fermentation using a bioreactor in comparison to yeast cells immobilized by entrapment in calcium alginate gel. The effects of temperature and flow rate as a function of reaction/fermentation time on fermentation rate were investigated. The fermentation reaction (in terms of loss of total soluble solids in the beer wort as a function of time) was first-order with half-lifes in the range of approximately 9-11 hours at approximately 10-12 degrees C at beer wort linear flow rates of approximately 0.8-1.6 cm/minute for ceramic support, compared with approximately 16 hours for Ca-alginate gel, the former support matrix being more efficient and demonstrating greater potential for future commercial application.

[Studies on fingerprint spectrum of Radix Sophorae Tonkinensis from Guangxi].

OBJECTIVE: To set up the fingerprint spectrum of Radix Sophorae Tonkinensis from Guangxi province. METHODS: HPLC with UV detector was used to analyze matrine and oxymatrine the patterns of Radix Sophorae Tonkinensis from Guangxi province. RESULTS: The fingerprint spectrum of Radix Sophorae Tonkinensis from Guangxi province was set up. Furthermore, the fingerprint spectrum showed an excellent correlation, and all the parameters of the main co-peaks met the requirements for State Drug Administration's technical regulations on the herb. CONCLUSION: The studies are useful for the standard planting and the quality control of Radix Sophorae Tonkinensis from Guangxi province.

[Protective effect of ganmeiling injection on chronic hepatic injury in rats].

OBJECTIVE: To study protective effect of Injection Ganmeiling on chronic hepatic injury. METHODS: The activity of AST, ALT and ALP in serum and histopathological change were determined in hepatic injury rats induced by CCl4. RESULTS: Ganmeiling obviously inhibited the rising of AST, ALT and ALP in serum. The histopathological examination showed that Ganmeiling could alleviate the condition of necrosis and the degeneration of hepatic cells. CONCLUSION: The results suggested that Ganmeiling could protect liver from hepatic injury induced by CCl4.

[Observation and comparison on microstructure of immobilized Aerobacillus fusiformis under wastewater treatment].

Aiming at printing ink wastewater, a strain of bacterium was isolated from activated sludge, and identified as Aerobacillus fusiformis. The Aerobacillus fusiformis was respectively immobilized in calcium alginate gel, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and microporous ceramics and their microstructure were observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). It was found that calcium alginate gel might dissolve in the wastewater, and the activity was restricted as cells wrapped in PVA, so the COD removal ratio was low. The method of immobilized cells using microporous ceramics is simple and COD removal efficiency can be achieved. In addition, the immobilized bacterium could not be separated easily from the ceramics in the wastewater.

[Treatment of a 2,4-dichlorophenol contaminated wastewater in an air-lift inner-loop bioreactor].

An air lift inner-loop bioreactor packed with honeycomb-like ceramic carrier was immobilized with a 2,4-Dichlorophenol-degrading pure culture and was investigated to degrade 2,4-Dichlorophenol and phenol. In fed-batch operation mode, 2,4-DCP biodegradation rate increased with run numbers and followed zero-order kinetics model when it existed alone, but when 2,4-DCP was present in the mixture with phenol, phenol degradation rate had an apparent trend to increase whereas 2,4-DCP removal rate became slower and slower. In continuous operation, 2,4-DCP at the concentration ranged from 6.9 to 102.4 mg/L could be degraded well at the dilution rate of 0.16 h-1 and the average removal percentage was 96.5%. Carbon sources changed from 2,4-DCP to acetate sodium and peptone in the course of operation for 12 days did not cause the bacteria loss the DCP-degrading ability.

[Studies on ceramic dual function membrane bioreactor for wastewater treatment].

A new bioreactor including ceramic dual function membrane, filtration and aeration, was developed and used for wastewater treatment. The turbidity of effluent by the ceramic membrane was comparable to that of 4-24 hours by sedimentation. Aeration and filtration could be switched constantly to the ceramic membrane in the bioreactor and the clogging of ceramic membrane could be well prevented. The wastewater was treated in batch and continues operation modes respectively and the experimental results showed that the COD loading was 1.1 kg/(m3.d) and 1.5 kg/(m3.d) respectively.
