Fix-A-Nator--a fixed bionator technique.

A simplified and efficient technique to correct Skeletal II's and/or short lower facial height is presented. This is a fixed technique that can achieve, in certain cases, the same result as a Bionator. This technique is called Fix-a-Nator. The advantages of fixed over removable appliance are 1. forces are continuous, and 2. better patient compliance. Disadvantage is that it may not be effective in some patients with lateral tongue thrusts, wich would prevent super erupting of posterior teeth.

Facial beauty--establishing a universal standard.

There is a universal standard for facial beauty regardless of race, age, sex and other variables. Beautiful faces have ideal facial proportion. Ideal proportion is directly related to divine proportion, and that proportion is 1 to 1.618. All living organisms, including humans, are genetically encoded to develop to this proportion because there are extreme esthetic and physiologic benefits. The vast majority of us are not perfectly proportioned because of environmental factors. Establishment of a universal standard for facial beauty will significantly simplify the diagnosis and treatment of facial disharmonies and abnormalities. More important, treating to this standard will maximize facial esthetics, TMJ health, psychologic and physiologic health, fertility, and quality of life.

Orthodontic diagnosis in young children: beyond dental malocclusions.

Orthodontics is more than merely diagnosing and treating dental malocclusion. It also includes diagnosis and treatment of facial/skeletal problems, upper airway obstruction (mouth breathing), temporomandibular dysfunction, and abnormal myofunctional habits. These assessments should be made in all patients but especially in children as young as age 5 to take advantage of facial growth. If problems are diagnosed early and preventive measures are instituted, many facial and dental problems may be minimized or averted.
