Brain-wide spontaneous neural avalanches: Definition, functional dynamics and cognitive relevance.

Although spontaneous activity is ubiquitous across multiple spatiotemporal scales, its functional organization and cognitive relevance remain poorly understood. Following the classic neuronal avalanche framework, a spontaneous avalanche is defined as consecutively active frames separated by inactive time bins. Hence, multiple distinct avalanches may be considered as one avalanche, thereby ignoring their spatial and temporal distinguishability. Furthermore, group-level power-law fitting of such neural avalanches is often performed to evaluate brain criticality (referring to a system perched between order and disorder) due to the limited recording length of macroscale neuroimaging (such as functional magnetic resonance imaging), and the functional representation of brain-wide neural avalanches is largely unexplored. To address these issues, we proposed large-scale neural avalanches as a single, spatially consecutive cascade pattern and further investigated their functional dynamics, network propagation, and association with task-evoked activity. Compared with the conventional inactive-bin definition, our current approach is more favorable to power-law fitting of avalanche size and duration distributions at the individual level. We also demonstrated that participants whose brain activities were close to the critical point tend to have higher cognitive abilities. Notably, the ratio of neural avalanches that evolved from primary sensory to association networks negatively correlated with cognitive abilities. Moreover, the geometric distance between low-dimensional representations of task-evoked activity and spontaneous avalanches was associated with behavioral performance. This study not only provides a promising avenue for measuring avalanche criticality based on human whole-brain neuroimaging, but also suggests that spontaneous neural avalanches and their low-dimensional representations contribute to human cognitive abilities.

Sorption of triazoles to soil and iron minerals.

Triazoles, additives in runway de-icers, are found in soil and groundwater at airport sites. To better understand the fate and transport of benzotriazole (BTA) and methylbenzotriazole (MeBTA) and to assess possible remediation options of contaminated groundwater, sorption to various soils and ferrous sorbents has been studied. In batch experiments, limited non-linear sorption of BTA to mineral subsoil from the Oslo International Airport, Gardermoen was observed. The sorption to soil could be described using a Freundlich isotherm. pH affected sorption of BTA to subsoil, although the effect was not strong. Increased sorption was observed to zerovalent iron (Fe(0)). MeBTA showed similar sorption behaviour as BTA although the sorption coefficient was generally higher. Sorption to Fe(0) seems to be controlled by multi-layer coverage. Our data suggest that sorption of triazoles to Fe(2)O(3) is negligible. However BTA sorption to 2-line and 6-line ferrihydrites showed strong sorption. The results demonstrate that triazoles are highly mobile in the subsurface environment, however zerovalent iron can be an effective medium for groundwater remediation. Without remediation, wide distribution of triazoles in the environment can be expected due to its extensive application and limited degradability.

Ab initio studies on the reaction of O2 with Ba(n) (n=2,5) clusters.

Ab initio theoretical calculations have been performed to study the reaction of O(2) with Ba(n) (n=2,5) clusters. Our results show that O(2) can easily chemisorb and dissociate on small Ba(n) clusters and there is no obvious energy barrier in the process of the dissociation. The local magnetic moment contributed by oxygen must vanish during the intermediate states before the O(2) dissociation. Correspondingly, local magnetic moment only decreases from 2 mu(B) to about 1 mu(B) if O(2) molecularly adsorbs onto Ba(5) cluster. The electronic structure analysis indicates that the charge transfer from Ba(n) cluster to O(2) as well as the orbital hybridization between the cluster and the oxygen molecule may play a key role in O(2) dissociation.

Pathway alterations during glioma progression revealed by reverse phase protein lysate arrays.

The progression of gliomas has been extensively studied at the genomic level using cDNA microarrays. However, systematic examinations at the protein translational and post-translational levels are far more limited. We constructed a glioma protein lysate array from 82 different primary glioma tissues, and surveyed the expression and phosphorylation of 46 different proteins involved in signaling pathways of cell proliferation, cell survival, apoptosis, angiogenesis, and cell invasion. An analysis algorithm was employed to robustly estimate the protein expressions in these samples. When ranked by their discriminating power to separate 37 glioblastomas (high-grade gliomas) from 45 lower-grade gliomas, the following 12 proteins were identified as the most powerful discriminators: IBalpha, EGFRpTyr845, AKTpThr308, phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K), BadpSer136, insulin-like growth factor binding protein (IGFBP) 2, IGFBP5, matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP9), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), phosphorylated retinoblastoma protein (pRB), Bcl-2, and c-Abl. Clustering analysis showed a close link between PI3K and AKTpThr308, IGFBP5 and IGFBP2, and IBalpha and EGFRpTyr845. Another cluster includes MMP9, Bcl-2, VEGF, and pRB. These clustering patterns may suggest functional relationships, which warrant further investigation. The marked association of phosphorylation of AKT at Thr308, but not Ser473, with glioblastoma suggests a specific event of PI3K pathway activation in glioma progression.

Macroporous ZrO2 ceramics prepared from colloidally stable nanoparticles building blocks and organic templates.

ZrO2 macroporous materials with well-ordered structures were prepared using nano-ZrO2 particles as the building materials and polystyrene spheres as the organic templates. A well-dispersed nano-ZrO2 suspension with a narrow particle size distribution was prepared by deagglomeration of as-received nano-ZrO2 powders via ultrasonication, and then centrifugation was performed to remove agglomerated bigger particles. Negatively charged polystyrene spheres were uniformly coated with positively charged nano-ZrO2 particles by means of electrostatic attraction at pH 4. Green samples were prepared by slip casting from colloidally stable suspension of nano-ZrO2 coated polystyrene spheres. ZrO2 macroporous materials with well-ordered microstructure derived from the nano-ZrO2 coated polystyrene spheres.

Initial stages of Ti growth on diamond (100) surfaces: from single adatom diffusion to quantum wire formation.

Using first-principles total energy calculations within density functional theory, we investigate the energetics, kinetics, and transport properties of Ti on clean and hydrogen-terminated diamond (100)-2x1 surfaces at increasing Ti coverages. On a clean surface, an isolated Ti adatom prefers to adsorb on top of a C-C dimer row, and also diffuses faster along the dimer row direction. As the Ti coverage increases, the preferred adsorption site converts from an atop site to a site located between the dimer rows. Passivation of the surface at the monohydride coverage not only greatly enhances the Ti mobility, but also weakens the diffusion isotropy. Based on these energetic and kinetic characteristics, we propose a viable approach to fabricate ideal Ti quantum wires on hydrogen-terminated diamond substrates.

Robust estimation of protein expression ratios with lysate microarray technology.

MOTIVATION: The protein lysate microarray is a developing proteomic technology for measuring protein expression levels in a large number of biological samples simultaneously. A challenge for accurate quantification is the relatively narrow dynamic range associated with the commonly used chromogenic signal detection system. To facilitate accurate measurement of the relative expression levels, each sample is serially diluted and each diluted version is spotted on a nitrocellulose-coated slide in triplicate. Thus, each sample yields multiple measurements in different dynamic ranges of the detection system. This study aims to develop suitable algorithms that yield accurate representations of the relative expression levels in different samples from multiple data points. RESULTS: We evaluated two algorithms for estimating relative protein expression in different samples on the lysate microarray by means of a cross-validation procedure. For this purpose as well as for quality control we designed a 1440-spot lysate microarray containing 80 identical samples of purified bovine serum albumin, printed in triplicate with six 2-fold dilutions. Our analysis showed that the algorithm based on a robust least squares estimator provided the most accurate quantification of the protein lysate microarray data. We also demonstrated our methods by estimating relative expression levels of p53 and p21 in either p53(+/+) or p53(-/-) HCT116 colon cancer cells after two drug treatments and their combinations on another lysate microarray. Effect of La(III) on the growth and aging of root of loquat plantlet in vitro.

The effect of lanthanum on the adventitious root growth, activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and peroxidase (POD), O2* production rate, MDA content, and the relative plasma membrane permeability in roots of loquat test-tube plantlet were studied. Addition of lanthanum chloride (0.5 micromol/L) to the culture medium significantly increased the length of roots, increased the dry weight, enhanced the activities of SOD, CAT, and POD, decreased O2* production rate, malondialdehyde (MDA) contents, and the relative plasma membrane permeability. The relatively stable membrane structure of cell could defer the root aging of the plantlet in vitro. There are important theory meaning and practical value in applying LaCl3 in the rooting medium to raise the rate of rooting and transplant for wood plant.

[Dynamics of soil nitrogen, phosphorus and organic matter in alfalfa-crop rotated farmland in semiarid area of Northwest China].

Pasture-crop rotation is regarded as a key planting system in the semiarid area of China's Loess Plateau. This paper studied the dynamics of soil nitrogen, phosphorus and organic matter within the two years of alfalfa-crop rotation. The results showed that in comparing with continuous alfalfa planting, alfalfa-crop rotation induced a decline of soil total nitrogen and organic matter contents by 5.4% and 19.5%, and 46.8% and 28.2%, respectively, in the first and second year, but no significant difference was found in soil total phosphorus. Soil nutrient availability was improved due to the rotation. In the first and second year of rotation, soil nitrate nitrogen and available phosphorus contents increased by 15.5% and 159.1%, and 44.5% and 48.0%, respectively. Planting spring wheat could maintain soil fertility, the second was fallow and planting potato, while planting corn accelerated the depletion of soil total nitrogen, organic matter and available phosphorus. As a result, in the alfalfa-crop rotation, planting spring wheat could be more available to the maintenance of soil fertility.

[Effects of lanthanum on alkaline phosphatase].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of lanthanum on the activities of two kinds of alkaline phosphatase (AP)-rat liver AP and bovine intestine AP, and the preliminary mechanism involved. METHODS: A traditional colorimetric method was used to measure the activity of AP. The influence of La3+ on the intrinsic fluorescence of protein was studied by the method of fluorescence titration into the AP solution by LaCl3. The quenching equation was fitted based on the fluorescence spectrum, and then the binding number and the binding constants were calculated. RESULTS: Lanthanum increased the activity of rat liver AP, whereas it decreased that of bovine intestine AP. It was observed that the binding of La3+ quenched the fluorescence of bovine intestine AP, which indicated that La3+ could change the conformation of AP in solution. The number of binding sites and the binding constants that were calculated based on the fitted quenching equation were 78 and 2.1 x 10(4) respectively. CONCLUSION: La3+ has different effects on the activities of rat liver AP and bovine intestine AP; the binding of La3+ can induce the changes of conformation of bovine intestine AP, and inhibit its activity.

Leading-particle effect from heavy-quark recombination.

The leading particle effect in charm hadroproduction is an enhancement of the cross section for a charmed hadron D in the forward direction of the beam when the beam hadron has a valence parton in common with the D. The large D(+)/D(-) asymmetry observed by the E791 experiment is an example of this phenomenon. We show that the heavy-quark recombination mechanism provides an economical expla-nation for this effect. In particular, the D(+)/D(-) asymmetry can be fit reasonably well using a single parameter whose value is consistent with a recent determination from charm photoproduction.
