Stereocomplex block copolymer micelles: core-shell nanostructures with enhanced stability.

Monodisperse stereocomplex block copolymer micelles were obtained through the self-assembly of equimolar mixtures of poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(l-lactide) and poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(d-lactide) in water. These micelles possessed partially crystallized cores and mean hydrodynamic diameters ranging from 31 to 56 nm, depending on the lactide content. They exhibited kinetic stability and redispersion properties superior to micelles prepared with isotactic or racemic polymers alone. This study demonstrates the advantages of stereocomplex formation in the design of stabilized water-soluble nanoparticles.

X-ray and neutron reflectometry investigation of Langmuir-Blodgett films of cellulose ethers.

Langmuir-Blodgett films of a series of cellulose ethers are investigated by X-ray and neutron reflectometry. Two types of samples are considered: simple alkyl ethers of cellulose and derivatives obtained by the alkylation of (2-hydroxypropyl)cellulose (HPC). All of the cellulose ethers form stable monolayers at the air-water interface. Significant differences are, however, found in the surface pressure-area compression isotherms. Ethers prepared from HPC typically exhibit larger limiting molecular areas and higher surface pressures than the corresponding simple cellulose ethers. The ease of monolayer transfer to hydrophobic silicon substrates differs greatly from one type of molecule to another. Successful transfer conditions are found only for ethers that form stable monolayers at sufficiently high surface pressures. Surprisingly, deuterated HPC ethers, prepared for neutron reflectivity measurements, exhibit monolayer properties significantly different from those of their hydrogenated analogues. Although essentially identical limiting molecular areas are found, the surface pressure corresponding to a characteristic plateau transition in the compression isotherm is found to decrease by about 8-10 mN m(-1) upon side chain deuteration. X-ray reflectivity results show a linear increase of film thickness with the number of deposited layers, indicating a regular and reproducible transfer. Observed average layer spacings are, however, significantly smaller than the calculated length of fully extended side chains. Neutron reflectivity curves recorded for composite LB films composed of both deuterated and hydrogenated polymers exhibit regular Keissig fringes, but no Bragg peak. This result indicates that these LB films do not possess an internal periodic structure and the initial layer-by-layer organization is lost by large interlayer diffusion.

Preparation and characterization of polyion-complexed Langmuir-Blodgett films containing an NLO chromophore.

Polyion complexes formed by monolayers of quaternary ammonium amphiphiles containing the 4-nitro-4'-alkoxy azobenzene chromophore spread at the surface of aqueous solutions of a number of anionic polyelectrolytes were investigated. In general, pi-A isotherms were found to depend on the nature of the polyion present in the subphase, with monolayers of complexes involving polycarboxylates tending to exhibit larger limiting areas than those formed with polysulfonates or polysulfates. Monolayers of the polyion complexes can be transferred to hydrophilic solid substrates to yield Z-type LB films, although some peeling off for more than 10 layers is an impediment. X-ray reflectivity measurements indicate that relatively smooth and uniform films are obtained up to about 10 layers. Average layer thicknesses are, however, significantly smaller than extended molecular lengths, implying that the amphiphiles are strongly inclined from the surface normal. Polarized FT-IR measurements also indicate poor molecular orientation perpendicular to the surface. Preliminary SHG measurements for LB films of two systems, 12Q/CMC-Na and 12Q/PAA, confirm the presence of noncentrosymmetric out-of-plane chromophore ordering. Stable signals are observed for elevated temperatures up to 130 degrees C and for a period of 4 months at room temperature. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the first report of stable SHG in LB films of polyion complexes.

[Surgical treatment of gastric remnant-stump cancer].

The aim of this study was to evaluate the characteristics, and treatment of gastric remnant cancer based on an analysis of the surgical results of Nippon Medical School over the past 18 years. Thirty seven patients (27 males and 10 females, mean age 60 years) underwent surgery for gastric remnant cancer. Patients who had undergone gastrectomy with Billroth II anastomosis for benign disorder underwent re-gastrectomy for the cancer of gastric remnant 20 years after the first gastrectomy. While, patients who had undergone gastrectomy with Billroth I anastomosis for malignant disorder underwent re-gastrectomy within 10 years after the first gastrectomy. Early-type gastric remnant cancers were not observed in the suture line or gastric stump region, while advanced-type cancers were observed in the anastomotic region. Surgical treatment was carried out by the method of total gastrectomy with Roux-en-Y esophago-jejunal anastomosis. The 5 year survival rates were 77%for early cancer and 14%for advanced cancer. Periodic follow-up endoscopies in gastrectomized patients may be useful for the early detection of gastric remnant cancer after operations for gastric cancer.
