Mechanisms of shear stress-induced endothelial nitric-oxide synthase phosphorylation and expression in ovine fetoplacental artery endothelial cells.

Placental blood flow, nitric-oxide (NO) levels, and endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) expression increase during human and ovine pregnancy. Shear stress stimulates NO production and eNOS expression in ovine fetoplacental artery endothelial (OFPAE) cells. Because eNOS is the rate-limiting enzyme essential for NO synthesis, its activity and expression are both closely regulated. We investigated signaling mechanisms underlying pulsatile shear stress-induced increases in eNOS phosphorylation and protein expression by OFPAE cells. The OFPAE cells were cultured at 3 dynes/cm2 shear stress, then exposed to 15 dynes/cm2 shear stress. Western blot analysis for phosphorylated ERK1/2, Akt, p38 mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK), and eNOS showed that shear stress rapidly increased phosphorylation of ERK1/2 and Akt but not of p38 MAPK. Phosphorylation of eNOS Ser1177 under shear stress was elevated by 20 min, a response that was blocked by the phosphatidyl inositol-3-kinase (PI-3K)-inhibitors wortmannin and LY294002 but not by the mitogen activated protein kinase kinase (MEK)-inhibitor UO126. Basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) enhanced eNOS protein levels in static culture via a MEK-mediated mechanism, but it could not further augment the elevated eNOS protein levels otherwise induced by the 15 dynes/cm2 shear stress. Blockade of either signaling pathway changed the shear stress-induced increase in eNOS protein levels. In conclusion, shear stress induced rapid eNOS phosphorylation on Ser1177 in OFPAE cells through a PI-3K-dependent pathway. The bFGF-induced rise in eNOS protein levels in static culture was much less than those observed under flow and was blocked by inhibition of MEK. Prolonged shear stress-stimulated increases in eNOS protein were not affected by inhibition of MEK- or PI-3K-mediated pathways.

HBO suppresses Nogo-A, Ng-R, or RhoA expression in the cerebral cortex after global ischemia.

Nogo-A, a myelin-associated neurite outgrowth inhibitory protein, binds with the Ng-R receptor to activate RhoA intracellular signals and inhibit the plasticity after CNS injury. We evaluated the effect of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) on the expression of Nogo-A, Ng-R, and RhoA after transient global ischemia in a rat 2 vessel occlusion global ischemic model. Male SD rats (n=78) were randomly divided into 13 groups: 1 sham group, 6 groups of global ischemia, and 6 groups of HBO treatment after global ischemia. HBO (3ATA) was applied for 2 hr at 1 hr after global ischemia. Rats were sacrificed at 6, 12, 24, 48, and 96 hr and 7 days. Global ischemia (10 min) produced a marked increase of Nogo-A/B, Nogo-A, Ng-R, and RhoA expression. Immunohistochemistry showed increased Nogo-A/B and Nogo-A located in the myelin sheath of ischemic brain cortex. Ng-R expressed on the surface of neurons and their processes, and RhoA expressed inside the cytoplasm of neurons in ischemic brain. HBO significantly reduced neurological injury, decreased the levels of Nogo-A, Ng-R, and RhoA in ischemic injured cortex (p<0.05).

Unprecedented selective ipso-nitration of calixarenes monitored by the O-substituents.

The electrophilic ipso-reactions of a tBu-calix[6]arene that presents alternate O-methyl and O-2-methylen-N-methyl-imidazolyl groups (1) at the small rim have been studied. Whereas 1 underwent per-sulfonation in sulfuric acid, it selectively reacted with nitric acid to yield a tris-nitro derivative. The ipso-nitration occurred regioselectively on the calixarene anisol units. The reaction has been studied with various tBu-calixarenes (2-11) presenting alternate anisol and phenol ether units. The regioselectivity of the process appeared to be correlated to the presence of a protonable site on the O-substituent. It is proposed that the corresponding protonated heteroatom (N for the amines, O for the amides and the carboxylic acid), situated in the gamma or epsilon position of the phenoxy moieties, deactivates the corresponding aromatic ring by removing electron density through intramolecular hydrogen bonding. The high control operated by the O-substituents at the small rim even allowed the selective ipso-nitration of partially detertiobutylated calixarene 1(H3). Hence, these findings open new routes to a wide range of nonsymmetrically substituted calixarenes at the large rim.

The correlation between patient characteristics and expectations of benefit from Phase I clinical trials.

BACKGROUND: Patients in Phase I clinical trials sometimes report high expectations regarding the benefit of treatment. The authors examined a range of patient characteristics to determine which factors were associated with greater expectations of benefit from Phase I trials. METHODS: Participants were adult patients with cancer who had been offered participation in Phase I studies and had decided to participate. Patients completed interviewer-administered surveys before initiation of treatment. Physicians assessed Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status for each patient. Statistical analyses (Pearson product moment correlation and t tests) used multiple imputation to account for missing data. RESULTS: Overall, 593 patients who were offered participation in Phase I trials were contacted, and 328 patients agreed to participate in a study of decision making by cancer patients. Of these, 260 patients (79%) enrolled in a Phase I trial. Patients' expectations regarding the chance that their disease would be controlled with experimental therapy were unrelated to age, gender, living situation, education level, or functional status. Expectations were correlated positively with beliefs about the benefit of standard therapy and the maximum benefit patients may experience from experimental therapy. Greater expectations of benefit were associated with better health-related quality of life, stronger religious faith, optimism, relative health stock, monetary risk seeking, and poorer numeracy. CONCLUSIONS: Expectations expressed as beliefs in personal outcomes may be related more to quality of life and personality variables than to patients' knowledge or functional status. Whether such expectations are accurate reflections of knowledge has important implications for evaluating the informed consent process.

A SANT motif in the SMRT corepressor interprets the histone code and promotes histone deacetylation.

Nuclear receptor corepressors SMRT (silencing mediator of retinoid and thyroid receptors) and N-CoR (nuclear receptor corepressor) recruit histone deacetylase (HDAC) activity to targeted regions of chromatin. These corepressors contain a closely spaced pair of SANT motifs whose sequence and organization is highly conserved. The N-terminal SANT is a critical component of a deacetylase activation domain (DAD) that binds and activates HDAC3. Here, we show that the second SANT motif functions as part of a histone interaction domain (HID). The HID enhances repression by increasing the affinity of the DAD-HDAC3 enzyme for histone substrate. The two SANT motifs synergistically promote histone deacetylation and repression through unique functions. The HID contribution to repression is magnified by its ability to inhibit histone acetyltransferase enzyme activity. Remarkably, the SANT-containing HID preferentially binds to unacetylated histone tails. This implies that the SMRT HID participates in interpreting the histone code in a feed-forward mechanism that promotes and maintains histone deacetylation at genomic sites of SMRT recruitment.

Perceptions of patients and physicians regarding phase I cancer clinical trials: implications for physician-patient communication.

PURPOSE: To describe and compare the perceptions of cancer patients and their physicians regarding phase I clinical trials. METHODS: Eligible patients had been offered phase I trial participation and had decided to participate but had not yet begun treatment. Each patient's physician also served as a study subject. Patients and physicians completed questionnaires with domains including perceptions of potential benefit and harm from treatment (experimental and standard), relative value of quality and length of life, and perceived content of patient-physician consultations. RESULTS: Three hundred twenty-eight patients and 48 physicians completed surveys. Patients had high expectations regarding treatment outcomes (eg, median 60% benefit from experimental therapy), with those choosing to participate in a phase I trial being more optimistic than those declining phase I participation. Patients predicted a higher likelihood of both benefit and adverse reactions from treatment (experimental and standard) than their physicians (P <.0001 for all comparisons). Although 95% of patients reported that quality of life was at least as important as length of life, only 28% reported that changes in quality of life with treatment were discussed with their physicians. In contrast, 73% of physicians reported that this topic was discussed (P <.0001). CONCLUSION: Cancer patients offered phase I trial participation have expectations for treatment benefit that exceed those of their physicians. The discordant perceptions of patients and physicians may possibly be explained by patient optimism and confidence; however, the discrepancies in reports of consultation content, particularly given patients' stated values regarding quality of life, raise the possibility that communication in this context is suboptimal.

[Surveillance on drug resistance of gram-negative bacilli isolated from hospital acquired infections and community acquired infections (2000 - 2001)].

OBJECTIVE: To determine the resistance rates of gram-negative bacilli isolated from patients with hospital acquired infections (HAI) or community acquired infections (CAI) in the 34 study wards of 13 hospitals located at different areas in China. METHODS: 1596 strains of gram-negative bacilli from the 2401 pathogenic strains isolated from 13 hospitals 1 July 2000 to 30 June 2001 were collected for susceptibility test using international standard two-fold agar dilution method. According to the criteria of guidelines of NCCLS (2001), MIC(50) and MIC(90) were detected for antibacterial activity of antimicrobial agents and R%, I%, and S%, were calculated to show the resistant, intermediate and susceptible rates of bacteria to the compounds tested. RESULTS: 15 species of gram-negative pathogens were isolated and most of them could be isolated from both CAI and HAI patients. The resistance rates of isolates, especially Enterobacter cloacae, Serratia spp. and Acinetobacter spp. from HAI were higher than those of CAI. The carbopenems were the most active compounds tested against Enterobacteriaceae. Cefoperozone/sulbactam and cefprime demonstrated excellent activity against most of Gram-negative bacilli. Most of the Gram-negative bacilli were still rather susceptible to cefatazidime, a third generation cephalosporin, with a susceptibility rate of 70% to 100%. Fluoroquinolones showed strong and broad-spectrum activity against Gram-negative bacilli, but more than 50% of Escherichia coli strains were resistant to fluoroquinolones, and the susceptible rates to fluoroquinolones of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Haemophilus influenzae had decreased. CONCLUSION: (1) The results obtained in the two surveillance-years, 2000 - 2001 and 1998 - 1999, were similar in the bacterial resistance pattern and the trend of rising of resistant rates for some Gram-negative pathogens. (2) The resistance rates of isolates from HAI patients were higher than those of CAI.

Purification and biological characterization of halocin C8, a novel peptide antibiotic from Halobacterium strain AS7092.

Halocins are bacteriocin-like proteins or peptides produced by many species of the family Halobacteriaceae. Halocin C8, excreted by the Halobacterium strain AS7092, is a single 6.3-kDa polypeptide with an isoelectric point of 4.4, which is sensitive to proteinase K but not to trypsin. Halocin C8 is quite stable, as it can be desalted, boiled, frozen, subjected to organic solvents, and stored in culture supernatant at 4 degrees C or in dH(2)O at -20 degrees C for more than 1 year without losing activity. The purification of this halocin was achieved by combination of tangential flow filtration (TFF), Sephadex G50 and DEAE-sepharose chromatography. The N-terminal amino acid sequence was also determined by Edman degradation. Halocin C8 appeared to have a very wide activity spectrum, including most haloarchaea and even some haloalkaliphilic rods. When a sensitive strain of Halorubrum saccharovorum was exposed to halocin C8, the treated cells swelled at the initial stage, the cell wall appeared to be nicked and the cytoplasm was then extruded out, and the whole cell was eventually completely lysed. These results indicate that halocin C8 is a novel microhalocin and its primary target might be located in the cell wall of the sensitive cells.

Effects of pulsatile shear stress on nitric oxide production and endothelial cell nitric oxide synthase expression by ovine fetoplacental artery endothelial cells.

Placental blood flow, endothelial nitric oxide (NO) production, and endothelial cell nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) expression increase during pregnancy. Shear stress, the frictional force exerted on endothelial cells by blood flow, stimulates vessel dilation, endothelial NO production, and eNOS expression. In order to study the effects of pulsatile flow/shear stress, we adapted Cellco CELLMAX artificial capillary modules to study ovine fetoplacental artery endothelial (OFPAE) cells for NO production and eNOS expression. OFPAE cells were grown in the artificial capillary modules at 3 dynes/cm2. Confluent cells were then exposed to 10, 15, or 25 dynes/cm2 for up to 24 h. NO production by OFPAE cells exposed to pulsatile shear stress was inhibited to nondetectable levels by the NOS inhibitor l-NMMA and reversed by excess NOS substrate l-arginine. NO production and expression of eNOS mRNA and protein by OFPAE cells were elevated by shear stress in a graded fashion (P < 0.05). The rise in NO production with 25 dynes/cm2 shear stress (8-fold) was greater (P < 0.05) than that observed for eNOS protein (3.6-fold) or eNOS mRNA (1.5-fold). The acute shear stress-induced rise in NO production by OFPAE cells was via eNOS activation, whereas the prolonged NO rise occurred by elevations in both eNOS expression and enzyme activation. Thus, elevations of placental blood flow and physiologic shear stress may be partly responsible for the increases in placental arterial endothelial eNOS expression and NO production during pregnancy.

9,10-Diphenyl-9,10-epidioxyanthracene and 9,10-dihydro-10,10-dimethoxy-9-phenylanthracen-9-ol.

9,10-Diphenyl-9,10-epidioxyanthracene, C(26)H(18)O(2), (I), was accidentally used in a photooxygenation reaction that produced 9,10-dihydro-10,10-dimethoxy-9-phenylanthracen-9-ol, C(22)H(20)O(3), (II). In both compounds, the phenyl rings are approximately orthogonal to the anthracene moiety. The conformation of the anthracene moiety differs as a result of substitution. Intramolecular C-H.O interactions in (I) form two approximately planar S(5) rings in each of the two crystallographically independent molecules. The packing of (I) and (II) consists of molecular dimers stabilized by C-H.O interactions and of molecular chains stabilized by O-H.O interactions, respectively.

Synthesis, X-ray crystal structure, and redox and electronic properties of iron(III)-polyimidazole complexes relevant to the metal sites of iron proteins.

A new tripod N(3) ligand (L), containing three imidazole rings, was synthesized in good yield. At variance with usual aromatic ligands with N(2) or N(3) donor sets such as pyridine or pyrazole derivatives, L stabilizes the Fe(III) oxidation state. The corresponding iron(III) complexes [Fe(L)Cl(3)] (1) and [Fe(L)(2)](ClO(4))(3) (2) were prepared and characterized by X-ray structural analysis and spectroscopic methods. The coordination environment around all the Fe(III) centers has a distorted octahedral geometry. [Fe(L)Cl(3)] (1) belongs to the monoclinic system, space group P2(1)/n, a = 9.7406(5) A, b = 17.207(2) A, c = 14.615(2) A, beta = 104.448(9)(o) Z = 4, V = 2372.1(4) A(3); R = 0.044, R(w) = 0.055. [Fe(L)(2)](ClO(4))(3) (2) belongs to the monoclinic system, space group P2(1)/c, a = 16.1057(15) A, b = 11.1079(12) A, c = 26.283(2) A, beta = 102.062(10)(o), Z = 4, V = 4598.2(8) A(3); R = 0.0465, R(w) = 0.0902. The Fe-N((i)PrIm) bond lengths are systematically longer than the Fe-N(MeIm) ones. Compound 2 is a highly anisotropic low-spin Fe(III) complex displaying a rather unusual EPR spectrum with a sharp signal at g = 3.5 and a broad one at g approximately 1.6. The fitting of this EPR spectrum is discussed.

[Surveillance on gram-positive bacteria isolated from patients with hospital acquired infections or community acquired infections].

OBJECTIVE: To determine the drug-resistance rates of gram-positive cocci isolated from patients with hospital acquired infection (HAI) or community acquired infection (CAI) in 34 study wards of 13 hospitals located at different areas in China. METHODS: According to the previous protocol, from July 1(st) 2000 to June 30(th) 2001, a total of 2401 pathogenic strains were isolated from 13 hospitals. Among them, 805 strains of gram-positive cocci were collected for in vitro susceptibility test using international standard plate dilution method. According to the criteria of guidelines of NCCLS (2001), MIC(50) and MIC(90) were detected to represent the antibacterial activity of antimicrobial agents and R%, I%, and S%, were calculated to show the resistant, intermediate and susceptible rates of the bacteria to the compounds tested. RESULTS: The detectable rates of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus epidermidis (MRSE) were 37.4% (89/238) and 33.8% (51/151) respectively. Among a total of 238 strains of S. aureus, 139 were isolated from patients with CAI and 37 were from HAI patients, the rate of MRSA from HAI patients (89.2%, 33/37) was significantly higher than that of MRSA from CAI patients (30.2%, 42/139) (P < 0.01). The total resistant rate of penicillin resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae (PRSP) was 26.7% (8/30), including a R% of 3.3% (1/30) and an I% of 23.3% (7/30). 331 strains of Enterococcus were isolated, including 178 strains from the study wards and 153 strains from other wards. The ratio of number of strains of E. faecalis to E. faecium was 6.8:1 (286/42). The rate of ampicillin resistant E. faecium (AREF) was 73.8% (31/42), significantly higher than the rate of ampicillin resistant E. faecalis (16.4%, 47/286). Neither strains of S. aureus nor strains of coagulase negative Staphylococcus were found resistant to vancomycin. No strains of Enterococcus were found resistant to vancomycin, the intermediate rates of E. faecalis and E. faecium to vancomycin were 3.5% (10/286) and 9.5% (4/42) respectively. All strains of Enterococcus were found 100% susceptible to teicoplanin. CONCLUSION: The resistance patterns of Gram-positive cocci including MRSA, PRSP, and AREF are similar to the results of the 1998 - 1999 surveillance. No strain of vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, including VRSA and VISA or vancomycin resistant enterococcus, VRE is found in this study.

Modeling the dependence of the period of intracellular Ca2+ waves on SERCA expression.

Contrary to intuitive expectations, overexpression of sarco-endoplasmic reticulum (ER) Ca(2+) ATPases (SERCAs) in Xenopus oocytes leads to a decrease in the period and an increase in the amplitude of intracellular Ca(2+) waves. Here we examine these experimental findings by modeling Ca(2+) release using a modified Othmer-Tang-model. An increase in the period and a reduction in the amplitude of Ca(2+) wave activity are obtained when increases in SERCA density are simulated while keeping all other parameters of the model constant. However, Ca(2+) wave period can be reduced and the wave amplitude and velocity can be significantly increased when an increase in the luminal ER Ca(2+) concentration due to SERCA overexpression is incorporated into the model. Increased luminal Ca(2+) occurs because increased SERCA activity lowers cytosolic Ca(2+), which is partially replenished by Ca(2+) influx across the plasma membrane. These simulations are supported by experimental data demonstrating higher luminal Ca(2+) levels, decreased periods, increased amplitude, and increased velocity of Ca(2+) waves in response to increased SERCA density.

Effects of inhaled ambient particulate matter on pulmonary antimicrobial immune defense.

Respiratory-tract infection, specifically pneumonia, contributes substantially to the increased morbidity and mortality among elderly individuals exposed to airborne particulate matter of <10 microm diameter (PM(10)). These epidemiological findings suggest that PM(10) may act as an immunosuppressive factor that can undermine normal pulmonary antimicrobial defense mechanisms. To investigate whether, and how, compromised pulmonary immunocompetence might contribute to increased mortality, two sets of laboratory studies were performed. The first examined the effects of a single inhalation exposure to concentrated ambient PM(2.5) (CAPS) from New York City air on pulmonary/systemic immunity and on the susceptibility of exposed aged rats to subsequent infection with Streptococcus pneumoniae. The second set of studies determined whether CAPS exposure, at a concentration approximating or somewhat greater than the promulgated 24-h NAAQS of 65 microg/m(3), could exacerbate an ongoing infection. Taken together, results demonstrated that a single exposure of healthy animals to CAPS had little effect on pulmonary immune function or bacterial clearance during subsequent challenge with S. pneumoniae. Alternatively, CAPS exposure of previously infected rats significantly increased bacterial burdens and decreased percentages of lavageable neutrophils and proinflammatory cytokine levels compared to those in infected filtered-air-exposed controls. These studies demonstrate that a single exposure to ambient PM(2.5) compromises a host's ability to handle ongoing pneumococcal infections and support the epidemiological findings of increased pneumonia-related deaths in ambient PM-exposed elderly individuals.

[Effects of dental cements on the stress distribution in amalgam-restored teeth].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of 5 kinds of base materials on the stress distribution and deflection in amalgam- restored teeth. METHODS: A computerized two-dimensional finite-element of the tooth model first molar was established. Various dental cements with a thickness of 0.5 mm and amalgam restorations with thickness of 2 mm in the prepared cavity were simulated and subjected to microhardness test (load=45 kg). The stresses and deflections along the cavity wall interface were analyzed by finite-element method. RESULTS: High stress and deflection occurred mainly at the line angle of the cavity, this could be magnified by using cements with lower elasticity modulus. The maximum compressive stress at the line angle induced by common ZOE or Ca(HO)(2) was increased 3.3 times or 2 times and deflections increased by 40% and 25% respectively that by Zinc phosphate and glass ionomer. CONCLUSION: Modulus elasticity of cement plays an important role in affecting the fracture strength of the amalgam restored tooth. The lower the elasticity modulus, the higher the stresses and deflections induced in the dentine. From the point of mechanical property, zinc phosphate is one of the best dental cements.

Transcriptional control of orf224/atp6 by the pol CMS restorer Rfp gene in Brassica napus L.

In order to investigate effects of fertility restorer gene Rfp on expression of orf224/atp6, Northern analyses of floral mitochondrial RNA (mtRNA) from polima (pol) CMS three lines were conducted using 10 probes of mitochondrial genes in this paper. Differences in transcriptional patterns were observed only with the probes atp6, orf224 and orf222. The atp6 probe detected a single, 1.1 kb transcript with strong abundance in the male fertile 1141B (nap cytoplasm). In the male sterile 1141A (pol cytoplasm) and fertile restorer line 1141R (pol cytoplasm), levels of this transcript appeared greatly reduced, and two longer transcripts of 2.2 and 1.9 kb were observed. Compared with 1141A, levels of the 2.2 and 1.9 kb transcripts appeared to be slightly reduced in the restorer line 1141R, and two additional transcripts of 1.3 and 1.4 kb were observed. The results suggested that the expression of orf224/atp6 gene region was associated with pol CMS and regulated by Rfp gene. In contrast to floral buds of the male sterile 1141A, the 1.4 kb transcript specific to fertility-restored plants was also observed in seedlings of 1141A. Possible mechanisms by which transcriptional alteration of orf224/atp6 between floral buds and seedlings of 1141A may be related to nuclear genotypes and relatively low temperature are discussed.

[Video-assisted thoracoscopic left sympathectomy for the treatment of congenital long QT syndrome].

OBJECTIVE: To assess the feasibility, safety and effectiveness of video-assisted thoracoscopic sympathectomy (VATS) for the treatment of congenital long QT syndrome. METHODS: Under general anaesthesia, pleural cavity was entered via two or three small incisions in the left intercostal space. The left thoracic sympathetic chain was identified and resected from T2 approximately T5. The lower one at the third of the left stellate ganglion was also resected. RESULTS: VATS resulted in a significant shortening in corrected QT intervals in three patients. The average QT interval of the four patients was 537.5 ms before VATS and 512.5 ms after VATS. The heart rate of the patients remained unchanged. There were no major peri-operative complications apart from mild ptosis of the left upper eyelid in one patient who recovered in the following days. The syndrome recurred in one patient in syncopal events in four months after VATS. CONCLUSION: VATS is a safe as well as an effective technique for the treatment of congenital long QT syndromes.

[Arrhythmia in the long-term follow-up after intracardiac repair of tetralogy of Fallot].

OBJECTIVE: The long-term success of intracardiac repair of tetralogy of Fallot is hampered by the occurrence of arrhythmias. The aim of the present study was to determine the incidence of arrhythmias after intracardiac repair of tetralogy of Fallot and their correlation with surgical and clinical findings. METHODS: The study group consisted of 54 patients, 35 males and 19 females. They underwent repair at a mean age of 51 months (range 17 to 117 months). The median age at the time of study was 9.4 years (range 5 to 14 years), and the mean duration of follow-up was 4.3 years (range 2.8 to 9.0 years) after surgery. The follow-up study included routine ECG, 24 hour Holter, echocardiography and exercise testing. RESULTS: The incidence of ventricular arrhythmia was 33 percent, and 1 patient had non-sustained ventricular tachycardia. All patients with elevated right ventricular pressure had ventricular arrhythmias, and 28% of patients with normal right ventricular pressure had ventricular arrhythmias (P < 0.05). 53% of patients had significant ventricular arrhythmias when the duration of cardiopulmonary bypass was > or = 90 minutes, as opposed to 23% when it was < 90 minutes (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in prevalence of ventricular arrhythmias between mild pulmonary regurgitation and severe pulmonary regurgitation (21% vs 40%, P > 0.05). No significant difference was found in the incidence of ventricular arrhythmias between follow-up in five years and more than five years (32% vs 34%, P > 0.05). Age at surgery correlated with the prevalence of ventricular arrhythmias (r = -0.221, P < 0.05). Eight patients (15%) had supraventricular arrhythmias. CONCLUSION: The frequency of ventricular arrhythmias correlated with elevated right ventricular systolic pressure, the duration of cardiopulmonary bypass, and the age at surgery. No correlation was found between pulmonary regurgitation and the duration of follow-up. Exercise-induced frequent multiform premature ventricular complexes were associated with abnormal hemodynamic status and high risk of ventricular tachycardia.
