Stable vortex solitons in nonlocal self-focusing nonlinear media.

We reveal that spatially localized vortex solitons become stable in self-focusing nonlinear media when the vortex symmetry-breaking azimuthal instability is eliminated by a nonlocal nonlinear response. We study the main properties of different types of vortex beams and discuss the physical mechanism of the vortex stabilization in spatially nonlocal nonlinear media.

Incoherent vector vortex-mode solitons in self-focusing nonlinear media.

We suggest a novel type of composite spatial optical soliton created by a coherent vortex beam guiding a partially incoherent light beam in a self-focusing nonlinear medium. We show that the incoherence of the guided mode may enhance, rather than suppress, the vortex azimuthal instability, and we also demonstrate strong destabilization of dipole-mode solitons by partially incoherent light.

Second-harmonic generation in vortex-induced waveguides.

We study the second-harmonic generation and localization of light in a reconfigurable waveguide induced by an optical vortex soliton in a defocusing Kerr medium. We show that the vortex-induced waveguide greatly improves conversion efficiency from the fundamental to the second-harmonic field.

Partially incoherent optical vortices in self-focusing nonlinear media.

We observe stable propagation of spatially localized single- and double-charge optical vortices in a self-focusing nonlinear medium. The vortices are created by self-trapping of partially incoherent light carrying a phase dislocation, and they are stabilized when the spatial incoherence of light exceeds a certain threshold. We confirm the vortex stabilization effect by numerical simulations and also show that the similar mechanism of stabilization applies to higher-order vortices.

Spatial solitons in optically induced gratings.

We study experimentally nonlinear localization effects in optically induced gratings created by interfering plane waves in a photorefractive crystal. We demonstrate the generation of spatial bright solitons similar to those observed in arrays of coupled optical waveguides. We also create pairs of out-of-phase solitons, which resemble twisted localized states in nonlinear lattices.
