Cost of selective feeding by the blue mussel (Mytilus trossulus) as measured by respiration and ammonia excretion rates.

The metabolic cost as measured by respiration and ammonia excretion rates associated with a selective as compared to a non-selective feeding behaviour was determined for the blue mussel, Mytilus trossulus. Mussels were challenged with four environmentally relevant seston matrices of different quality and quantity, which were known to evoke either a sorting response (i.e., selective feeding) where organic-rich particles were selected over inorganic particles as compared to no sorting (i.e., non-selective) where either inorganic or organic particles were ingested by the bivalve. Seston matrices were prepared by mixing known quantities of silt and algae such that the following extent of feeding responses would occur; no pre-sorting of ingested material, (1) no algae+50 mg silt l(-1), (2) 150x10(6) cells l(-1) of algae+no silt, and, where pre-sorting of ingested material occurred, (3) 20x10(6) cells l(-1) of algae and 20 mg l(-1) of silt, and (4) 150x10(6) cells l(-1) of algae and 50 mg l (1) of silt. A control, which represented basal metabolism consisting of mussels exposed only to filtered seawater (0.45 &mgr;m), was included for a total of five treatments. Mussel respiration and ammonia excretion rates were independent of whether mussels were pre-sorting or not sorting ingested material. Of the four matrices, only rates determined for conditions of maximum seston quality and quantity where pre-sorting of the seston occurred were significantly different from control mussels (p<0.05, ANOVA). Estimates of net energy used for feeding, where net energy is total energy intake (food) minus energy expenditure (energy lost through respiration and excreta as measured by ammonia excretion rates), indicated that feeding, whether selective or non-selective required only 0.92% of net energy intake. Hence, mussels appear to be highly adapted to a dynamic food environment with negligible costs associated with the feeding process, even when significant pre-selection of organic-rich particles occurs.

Effects of

Effects of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTABr) micelles on second-order rate constants (k(n)(obs)) for nucleophilic reactions of amines (piperidine and n-butylamine) with ionized phenyl salicylate (PS(-)) reveal a nonlinear decrease with the increase in [D(n)] (where [D(n)] = [CTABr](T) - cmc) at a constant [NaBr] and 35 degrees C. The observed data, at a constant [NaBr], fit reasonably well to a pseudophase model of micelles, and such a data fit gives kinetic parameters such as CTABr micellar binding canstant (K(S)) of PS(-). The effect of [NaBr] upon K(S) is explained with the empirical relationship K(S) = K(S)(0)/(1 + psi[NaBr]), where psi is an empirical parameter.

Effects of Nonionic, Cationic, and Mixed Nonionic-Cationic Surfactants on the Acid-Base Behavior of Phenyl Salicylate.

The effects of Brij 35 micelles, CTABr micelles, and mixed Brij 35-CTABr micelles on the acid-base behavior of phenyl salicylate (PST) have been studied in aqueous solution containing 2% v/v acetonitrile. The apparent pK(b) (pK(app)(b)) of PST is decreased by 1.5 pK units with the increase in [Brij 35] from 0 to 0.02 M which is attributed to micellar medium effect. The values of pK(app)(b) remain almost independent of [CTABr] within its range 0.01-0.03 M. The increase in [CTABr] from 0 to 0.03 M in aqueous solution containing 0.02 M Brij 35 has not resulted in a change in pK(app)(b). This shows that the characeristic structural features of nonionic Brij 35 micelles remain essentially unchanged on addition of CTABr under the present experimental conditions. Relationship between Breteau and House indices and cases of dengue/dengue hemorrhagic fever in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The relationship between the Breteau index, the House index, and the occurrence of dengue/dengue hemorrhagic fever in the 6 zones of Kuala Lumpur was studied throughout 1994. Cases of dengue/dengue hemorrhagic fever varied between zones and between months, ranging from 0 to 21 cases. In most of the zones in Kuala Lumpur, the occurrence of dengue/dengue hemorrhagic fever has no relationship with the Breteau and House indices. Cases of dengue/dengue hemorrhagic fever occurred in all zones despite the low Breteau and House indices.

Acute non lymphoblastic leukemia in the Department of Child Health School of Medicine, University of North Sumatera/Dr. Pirngadi Hospital Medan (1983-1988), a preliminary study.

A retrospective study on Acute Non Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ANLL) was conducted at the Sub Division of Pediatric Hematology, School of Medicine, University of North Sumatera/Dr. Pirngadi Hospital Medan, in a period of 5 years (1983-1988). There were 18 cases consisted of 14 (77.78%) males and 4 (22.22%) females with the age group of 0-2 years: 6 (30%), 2-8 years: 9 (50%), 8-15 years: 3 (30%). By the FAB classification, they were of FAB M-1: 1 (5.55%). FAB M-2: 1 (5.55%), FAB M-3: 1 (5.55%), FAB M-4: 2 (11.12%) and FAB M-6: 13 (72.23%). Only 7 (38.88%) were treated with cytostatics while the others received only supportive therapy. The result of cytostatic treatment was unsatisfactory: 4 (57.14%) died within the first 2 months of treatment, 3 (42.86%) discontinued their cytostatics treatment.

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia in the Department of Child Health, School of Medicine, University of North Sumatera/Dr. Pirngadi Hospital Medan (1980-1988).

A retrospective study on acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) was conducted to assess the pattern of childhood ALL at the Subdivision of Pediatric of Hematology, School of Medicine, University of North Sumatera/Dr. Pirngadi Hospital, Medan, in a period of 8 years (1980-1988). There were 120 cases, consisting of 63 (52.5%) males and 57 (47.5%) females. By the FAB classification (Bennett, 1976) (77.5%) were found as FAB L 1, 25 (20.8%) as FAB L 2, and 2 (1.7%) as FAB L 3. The youngest was 4 months old. The majority of signs and symptoms appeared in the forms of pallor 102 (85%), fever 84 (70%), hemorrhage 52 (43.3%), hepatomegaly 64 (53.3%), splenomegaly 54 (45%) and lymphadenopathy 18 (15%). On first admission, 76 (63.33%) cases were with a leukocyte count of less than 20,000/microliters, and 72 (60%) with Hb content of less than 5 g/dl. Twenty one cases died in the first year. The received cytostatic protocol; 11 (52.38%) were treated regularly and first remission were found in 8 (72.73%) cases. The average of admissions per year for the age group of 2-8 years was higher than the age groups of 0-2 years and 8-16 years (p less than 0.05).
