Comparison of computed radiography and film/screen combination using a contrast-detail phantom.

The purpose of this work is to compare computed radiography (Kodak CR 400) and film/screen combination (Speed 400) systems in regards of patient dose, technique settings, and contrast-detail detectability. A special contrast-detail phantom with drilled holes of varying diameter (detail) and varying depth (contrast) was utilized. Various thicknesses of the Lucite sheets were utilized to simulate scattering tissues. Images of the phantom were acquired using a range of 60-120 kVp for film/screen and CR with a conventional x-ray tube and then for CR with additional 2 mm aluminum added filtration to the x-ray beam. The patient entrance skin dose was measured while maintaining 1.6 o.d. for film/screen images and 1900 Exposure Index for CR images. CR phantom images were displayed on the diagnostic workstation for soft copy reading as well as printed on films for hard copy reading on viewbox. Four physicists evaluated the images by scoring the threshold target depth along the row of the same target diameter. Detection ratio was calculated by counting the number of detectable targets divided by the total number of targets in the phantom. The overall score was related to the patient entrance skin dose, kVp, and the thickness of the scattering material. The patient entrance skin dose was reduced as the additional aluminum filter was added to the x-ray beam. Our findings suggested using a higher kVp setting and additional added filtration would reduce the patient entrance skin dose without compromising the contrast-detail detectability, which was compensated by the contrast manipulation on soft-copy display workstations.

Ultrasound backscatter and attenuation in human liver with diffuse disease.

Ultrasound backscatter and attenuation in the liver were measured in patients with diffuse liver disease and in 35 volunteers who had no history of liver ailments. Measurements were done using radiofrequency (RF) echo signals derived from a clinical scanner; a reference phantom was scanned to account for effects of gain, transmit-receive frequency response and transducer beam patterns on echo data. The mean backscatter coefficient at 3 MHz in livers of 7 patients with fatty infiltration was 6.8 x 10(-3) cm(-1)sr(-1) compared to a mean of 0.5 x 10(-3) cm(-1)sr(-1) in healthy patients. Mean attenuation at 3 MHz was 2.54 dB/cm in fatty livers compared to 1.66 dB/cm in healthy patients. A total of 7 patients with end-stage liver disease (cirrhosis) had attenuation values similar to those in the healthy group, and their mean liver backscatter was somewhat greater than the mean backscatter for healthy livers. Quantitating both backscatter and attenuation should be considered for detecting fatty infiltration; additional processing methods are needed to differentiate cirrhotic changes on the basis of acoustic signals.

Three new species of the genus Actinobispora of the family Pseudonocardiaceae, Actinobispora alaniniphila sp. nov., Actinobispora aurantiaca sp. nov. and Actinobispora xinjiangensis sp. nov.

The genus Actinobispora Jiang et al. is characterized by the formation of longitudinally paired spores on both the vegetative and the aerial mycelium, absence of mycolic acid, cell wall chemotype IV (containing meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diamino acid, galactose and arabinose), PVI and MK-9(H2). Comparative studies of morphology, chemical classification and phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA sequences among the four type strains of the genus Actinobispora and type strains of related genera were carried out. The results indicated that the genus Actinobispora is different from these other genera and should be placed in the family Pseudonocardiaceae Embley et al. 1988 with the genera Amycolatopsis, Pseudonocardia, Saccharomonospora, Saccharopolyspora and Actinopolyspora. On the bases of these results, three new species under the names of Actinobispora alaniniphila sp. nov., Actinobispora aurantiaca sp. nov. and Actinobispora xinjiangensis sp. nov. are proposed; the type strains are CCTCC AA97001T, CCTCC AA97002T and CCTCC AA97020T.

Monthly monitoring program on DryView laser imager: one year experience on five Imation units.

Dry-processing film systems have become popular particularly in a network environment. This is mainly due to its ability to produce high quality images without wet chemistry processing. In this paper we describe a monthly monitoring program on five Model 8700 DryView Laser Imagers in our institution. A SMPTE pattern is generated via DryView Laser Imager software. The 100% patch is used for checking the base-plus-fog of the Imager. The 40% patch is used as the speed index. The optical density difference between patches 10% and 70% is used as the contrast index. These numbers are plotted for testing system consistency. In addition, the SMPTE pattern is examined to verify the sharpness of the bar patterns and the visibility of subtle contrasts-95% inset in the 100% patch and a 5% inset in the 0% patch. The clinical films are checked for processor artifacts, such as residuals from the drum. Stability of the dry processors has also been studied using three strips per day obtained at three different times of the day over a period of ten consecutive working days. The coefficient of variation is 0.05 for the speed index and 0.04 for the contrast index. The monthly monitoring program has been carried out in our institution since January 1997. The problems found by this monthly monitoring program assess the necessity of routine QC for DryView Laser Imagers. The instability of the post-processing dry silver films, and, consequently, the film handling requirements, are also discussed.

Ultrasound attenuation and backscatter in the liver during prednisone administration.

Ultrasound attenuation and backscatter changes resulting from glucocorticoid administration were investigated in a dog model. Ten beagle dogs were randomized into two groups: five were given 2 mg/kg/day IM injections of prednisone to induce steroid hepatopathy and five served as controls. Histology showed vacuolization in most hepatocytes of treated animals on the third day of treatment, and larger, midzonally distributed vacuoles from day 7 on. An increase in both ultrasonic attenuation and backscatter was observed in treated dogs during in vivo measurements. Pooled data from the two groups suggest that attenuation elevations precede backscatter changes. Attenuation was significantly higher in the treated animals than in the controls by day 7. Both attenuation and backscatter were significantly higher in livers of treated than untreated dogs when measured by direct application of the transducer on the liver following euthanasia. We conclude that attenuation and backscatter coefficients can detect early changes in the liver associated with steroid hepatopathy. This may be a useful model to investigate detection of diffuse liver disease with ultrasound tissue characterization.

Measurement of acoustic backscatter and attenuation in the liver of dogs with experimentally induced steroid hepatopathy.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the usefulness of a new method of measuring acoustic backscatter and attenuation in the liver of dogs with experimental steroid-induced hepatopathy. ANIMALS: 10 clinically normal dogs. PROCEDURE: Steroid hepatopathy was induced by daily injections of prednisone (2 mg/kg of body weight, IM). Dogs were evaluated histologically and were sonographically imaged on days 0, 3, 7, 10, and 14. Acoustic backscatter and attenuation were measured from in vivo images of dogs, using a video signal method, and compared with results obtained from analysis of the unprocessed radio frequency signal. RESULTS: Histologic evaluation revealed midzonal, predominantly water-filled vacuoles in hepatocytes by day 7, which persisted for the remainder of the study and significantly (P = 0.0001) increased liver weight on day 14. Attenuation and backscatter increased during the experimental period. Mean effective attenuation difference was higher (P = 0.015) in the liver imaged through a left paraxyphoid window in experimental dogs by day 3. Significantly (P < 0.05) greater attenuation persisted in the liver of experimental dogs throughout the experimental period. Mean backscatter ratio was significantly increased (P = 0.02) by day 10. Uncorrected pixel intensity of the liver in 2 experimental dogs was approximately equal to that of the spleen on day 10 and greater than that of the spleen on day 14. CONCLUSION: Administration of prednisone to dogs results in increased acoustic backscatter and attenuation in the liver. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The video signal method is a sensitive technique for detecting subtle acoustic changes in the liver of dogs.

A method for estimating an overlying layer correction in quantitative ultrasound imaging.

A new method is tested to compensate for attenuation losses through the intervening layers in quantitative ultrasound imaging. The method subtracts the echo signal power spectrum acquired from a uniform region beneath the overlying layers from the signal power spectrum obtained from a reference phantom using the same instrumentation system settings. Changes in spectral components with frequency are then used to estimate the attenuation of the overlying layers. Several phantoms were used to test the method, among which was a phantom having three windows, one with no overlying layers and the other two with fat and muscle mimicking layers of different degrees of irregularity. Attenuation losses through the windows were compensated for using the technique, producing backscatter estimator images of a simulated tumor inside the phantom. After applying the method, consistent results for the backscatter estimator of the tumor, as well as the backscatter coefficient of the background material, were obtained from the various windows.

[Comparison of the ultrastructural and clinical studies on myocardium in patients with congenital heart disease].

Right ventricle myocardium of 25 cases of tetralogy of Fallot and 11 cases of ventricle septal defect were studied by both light and electron microscopy. Normal human myocardium from 4 cases were used as the control. The resulting data indicate that the mean muscle diameter correlated significantly with the course of disease, mean pressure of right ventricle and diameter of ventricle septal defect. In 6 cases with congenital heart disease, the myocardium was atrophic and presented with 2 types of ultrastructural features: accumulation of Z-line material or hyperplasia of the mitochondria. The significance of these ultrastructural findings in congenital heart disease is discussed.

Quantitative ultrasound imaging: in vivo results in normal liver.

A method for qualitative imaging of ultrasonic backscatter levels has been implemented on a clinical imager. The method is based on comparing echo signal data from a sample or patient to echo data processed in the same way but acquired from a reference phantom. The attenuation coefficient and the backscatter coefficient of the reference phantom are known, permitting these quantities to be estimated for the sample. In the present paper, the spatial location of echo data acquisition is retained in the backscatter data analysis; quantitative "backscatter estimator" images are constructed, from which the backscatter coefficient over a region of interest may be obtained. When applied to human liver images, backscatter coefficients determined in 10 normal subjects were in approximate agreement with in vitro liver backscatter coefficients reported by previous workers.
