Prognostic significance of cell cycle parameters in infiltrative ductal breast carcinoma.

Flow-cytometric DNA analysis was performed retrospectively from paraffin-embedded blocks in 158 consecutive ductal infiltrative breast carcinoma patients grades I-III. Normal breast tissue was used as control. Tumor proliferative activity, cell ploidy, and DNA index (DI) were related to age of patients, histological grade of tumor, tumor size, axillary lymph node status, estrogen and progesterone receptor status, menopausal status,TNM clinical classification, and survival. There was a significant association between DNA aneuploidy and a high cellular proliferative activity, increased DI, poor differentiation of tumor, primary tumor size, number of positive lymph nodes, and postmenopausal state. Increased proportion of cells in S-phase was associated with positive lymph node status and higher number of positive lymph nodes. The cell cycle parameters had no prognostic value either for overall survival of disease-free survival of the patients.

Prostatic polyp in the prostatic urethra.

The authors report on a case of prostatic polyp in the urethral bulb of a 35-year-old man. The presence of this lesion in the urethral bulb is quite unusual and may be overlooked on cystocopic evaluation.

Cystosarcoma phyllodes of the prostate.

We report a case of a 40-year-old man with cystosarcoma phyllodes of the prostate. This tumour is very rare in the prostate. The stroma of the tumour was cellular and composed of elongated cells with spindle shaped nuclei, scanty, pale and eosinophilic cytoplasm. Some cells showed nuclear atypia but the cells did not display mitotic activity. We categorised this tumour as benign. The suprapubic prostatectomy was done. The patient is alive and well after three years.

Immunohistochemical testing of a new anti-EGF antibody.

A new polyclonal anti-EGF antibody, raised in rabbits against a fragment of the human EGF molecule was evaluated for its usefulness in immunohistochemistry. Various combinations of fixation, concentration, temperature, time and staining procedures were tested on rat submandibulary glands. The best results were obtained using 10% buffered or neutral formalin fixation for 24 hours, 1:1000 dilution of primary antibody, incubation time of 60 min with addition of 10% neutral rat serum to the secondary antibody and the ABC staining method. Staining of different human and rat tissues demonstrated strong reactivity in human parotid glands and both human and rat kidney. Moderate reactivity was found in human and rat gastric, duodenal, colonic as well as buccal mucosa.
