[Health problems of the stomatognathic system in the Polish population attending dental health service offices].

The results of the reported study showed considerable differences in the causes of attending dental health service offices, and differences in the health state of the stomatognathic system in the studied populations in certain provinces. Not always these differences were due to the index of dental health service availability. The index of this availability had a significant effect on the results of the therapeutic activity of dentists, and was unrelated to the results of prophylactic activities. Usually more teeth with active caries and more missing teeth were in the provinces with prevalence of peasant population. At the same time these provinces had a lower per cent of subjects with unfilled gaps in teeth. High per cent of studied subjects with missing teeth, usually not replaced or only partially reconstructed can be explained by very low attendance of patients to prosthetic laboratories.

[Health problems of the stomatognathic system in the Polish population receiving stomatological care. Health needs and the possibilities of their realization].

On the basis of the results of epidemiological examinations described in four parts of the paper the qualitative and quantitative health needs of the stomatognathic system are discussed in the environment of learning and breeding (preschool, elementary school, secondary school, university), living (regional health clinic, health centre) and work (industrial plant clinic). In the assessment of the health needs in relation to quantitatively defined populations the possibilities of their realization are discussed. It is thought that the needs for therapeutic intervention are greatest in secondary school population, university students and patients in health centres and regional clinics.

[Periodontological therapeutic needs of selected age groups in Poland].

The needs for periodontological treatment were assessed on the basis of the most modern needs index CPITN in 3 age groups 7, 12 and 35-44 years. The obtained results indicated that in children aged 7 and 12 years the highest need for periodontological treatment was in the first category of need (TN 1). In the group of adults the highest proportion was again in the 1 and 2 categories of need. The proportion of subjects with healthy periodontium was highest in children aged 7 years (51.89%) and lowest in the age group 35-44 years (0.66%).

Electro-thermometric study on the healing of free gingival grafts covered by two different dressings.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the healing of the gingival grafts covered with Solcoseryl dental adhesive paste (Solco Basel AG) in comparison with the grafts covered with Peripac. By means of thermistor thermometer coupled with a chart recorder, three series of temperature as time recordings of grafted tissues after normalized cooling were performed--before grafting, 2 and 12 weeks after grafting. On the basis of temperature recovery curves obtained, the blood supply coefficients were computed. It was revealed that in the Solcoseryl group there was an improvement in blood supply in 75% of the cases--2 weeks, and 66%--12 weeks after grafting. In the other group, the same reaction was observed only in 50% and 30% of the cases respectively.

Oral health of Polish children and WHO/FDI goals for the year 2000.

Based on available epidemiology data, dating sporadically from 1967 to 1985, of the oral health situation of Polish children and youngsters, the attainment of the first three oral health goals of FDI/WHO for the year 2000 is discussed. It can be assumed that the first oral health goal may be reached by at most only 10% of Polish children. The second oral health goal may be achieved by some 60% of 12-yr-old Polish children. The third oral health goal will be reached by at most 33% of 18-yr-old Polish youngsters. The reasons for these rather pessimistic prognoses are explained.

[Peat poultices in the treatment of parodontal diseases].

For an assessment of the therapeutic effectiveness of peat poultices in parodontal diseases in 156 patients of either sex aged 24-68 years the authors used the gingival index, Suleus Fluid Rate, selective cytometric examination of salivary sediment and electrothermometric testing of the gingiva before and after this treatment. Moreover, after the treatment the patients answered an inquiry for expressing their opinion on the course and effectiveness of peat treatment. The difference test used in the calculations demonstrated statistically significant differences before and after the treatment with respect to the gingival index and Suleus Fluid Rate. Statistically significant differences were found also between the values of the leucocyte index and the keratinization index before and after peat treatment. The opinions of the patients were mostly positive.

[Examination of CPITN indicator usefulness in specialist periodontal care].

Usefulness of CPITN indicator in specialistic parodontological care in 70 patients aged between 15-59 years has been estimated. One specialist was denoting the CPITN indicator on a special card and sending these patients to 1 out of 4 parodontologists in order to determine therapeutic management in a traditional way without knowing the value of CPITN. Comparing therapeutic needs based on CPITN value and on specialistic clinical examination it has been found that in 55.7% there existed a difference in parodontological needs and in 24.3% cases CPITN indicator determined therapeutic needs more precisely. It has resulted from utilization of diagnostic tool--WHO 621 tube. In 37.1% of the cases there existed inconsistency in determining therapeutic needs by both methods. It has resulted from the differences of both programs' assumptions. Although the CPITN system is intended for determination of parodontological needs of a certain community it can also be applied in specialistic parodontological care.

[Indicator of periodontal therapeutic needs (CPITN) in adults aged between 35-44 years in Szczecin province].

The authors have studied parodontological therapeutic needs utilizing the indicator of needs (CPITN) in 122 adults (35-44 years old) living in a small city of Lobez and adjacent villages in Szczecin province. From the results obtained it follows that the greatest percentage of parodontological therapeutic needs referred to the third category of these needs (82.8%). The average number of sextances with dental deposits falling to 1 person was 2.3 and with gingival pockets of 6 mm or deeper--2.1. No person with healthy parodontium has been found. Significantly greater parodontological therapeutic needs have been found in men than in women.

Dental hygienists as a new element in the oral health service in Poland.

A comparison of the number, employment, utilization and activities of dental hygienists in Poland between 1977 and 1982 is described. In spite of a distinct increase in number and better distribution in the country, the employment of hygienists in the oral health service is still low. However, the majority of dental hygienists are employed in the oral health service for children, working mostly as dental assistants doing fluoride prophylaxis and dental health education in addition. The percentage of operating dental hygienists is also low. The need for their preventive activity is great, as the dental caries rate in Polish children is generally high.
