Branched fluoropolymer-Si hybrids via surface-initiated ATRP of pentafluorostyrene on hydrogen-terminated Si(100) surfaces.

Linear, branched, and arborescent fluoropolymer-Si hybrids were prepared via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) from the 4-vinylbenzyl chloride (VBC) inimer and ClSO(3)H-modified VBC that were immobilized on hydrogen-terminated Si(100), or Si-H, surfaces. The simple approach of UV-induced coupling of VBC with the Si-H surface provided a stable, Si-C bonded monolayer of "monofunctional" ATRP initiators (the Si-VBC surface). The aromatic rings of the Si-VBC surface were then sulfonated by ClSO(3)H to introduce sulfonyl chloride (-SO(2)Cl) groups and to give rise to a monolayer of "bifunctional" ATRP initiators. Kinetics study indicated that the chain growth of poly(pentafluorostyrene) from the functionalized silicon surfaces was consistent with a "controlled" or "living" process. The chemical composition and functionality of the silicon surface were tailored by the well-defined linear and branched fluoropolymer brushes. Atomic force microscopy images revealed that the surface-initiated ATRP of pentafluorostyrene (PFS) had proceeded uniformly on the Si-VBC surface to give rise to a dense and molecularly flat surface coverage of the linear brushes. The uniformity of surfaces with branched brushes was controlled by varying the feed ratio of the monomer and inimer (VBC in the present case). The living chain ends on the functionalized silicon surfaces were used as the macroinitiators for the synthesis of diblock copolymer brushes, consisting of the PFS and methyl methacrylate polymer blocks.

[Studies on compounds of cancer chemoprevention: synthesis of some amides].

In search for cancer chemoprevention agents, seven new amide compounds have been synthesized. The structures have been determined based on spectral and chemical data. N-4-(ethoxycarbophenyl)-alpha-naphthamide and N-4-(ethoxycarbophenyl)-beta-naphthamide were shown to be 81% and 79% effective, respectively, for inducing different in HL-60 human promyelocytic leukemia cells at the concentration of 10(-5) mol/L in NBT tests.

Interspecies reactivity of five monoclonal antibodies to Mycobacterium tuberculosis as examined by immunoblotting and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

Five different murine monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) to Mycobacterium tuberculosis were examined for degree of cross-reactivity with other mycobacterial species by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and immunoblotting. One MAb reacted solely with M. tuberculosis and M. bovis BCG. Two of the MAbs reacted with all mycobacterial species examined, whereas two MAbs demonstrated a limited reactivity pattern. The epitopes are located on molecules susceptible to protease treatment, and two of these molecules possess concanavalin A-binding moieties. Two of the antigens defined by these five MAbs are present in tuberculin purified protein derivative.

Production and partial characterization of monoclonal hybridoma antibodies to Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

The production and partial characterization of monoclonal hybridoma antibodies against Mycobacterium tuberculosis is described. 30 clones have been produced. Their reactivity towards M. tuberculosis antigens have been tested in immunoblotting from SDS-PAGE, in crossed immunoelectrophoresis and in ELISA. The Mab's separated into four reactivity groups, one of which may be relevant in assays for antigen specific for M. tuberculosis.
