Development conditions and principles for identification of cow's milk protein hypersensitivity in infants.

The authors studied a group of 153 infants presenting pneumonia and/or bronchitis suspected to be immunized to cow's milk proteins (cow's milk allergy). The diagnosis was confirmed in 96 children (62.7%), which is 20.8% of hospitalized infants presenting respiratory tract diseases. Factors influencing the occurrence of family cow's milk intolerance and the type of infant feeding were analyzed thoroughly. Our own principles of diagnosing hypersensitivity to cow's milk proteins, considering the family history suggesting the possibility of cow's milk hypersensitivity, the occurrence of recurrent wheezy bronchitis and symptoms of the gastrointestinal tract were established. The diagnostic usefulness of LMIT with cow's milk allergens was assessed.

[Secondary glaucoma after cobalt therapy of a choroidal melanoma].

The clinical material comprises 157 patients of both sexes treated by means of 60Co plate and xenon photocoagulation for choroidal melanoma. The period of observation amounted 5 to 18 years. Secondary glaucoma occurred in 71 eyes (45.22 p.c.). Forty four eyes were enucleated (61.9 p.c.). In 5 cases a filtering operation was performed; the IOP was controlled in 3. The remaining eyes were treated conservatively. No dependence was observed between the appearing of glaucoma and the sex, age of the patients, location of the tumor, a large dose of radiation and photocoagulation. Instead it was demonstrated a dependence between the appearance of glaucoma and the necessity of enucleation. Also among the deceased patients the group with secondary glaucoma was more numerous then among those who survived.

[Orbital invasion and recurrence of retinoblastoma].

The authors present a clinical material comprising 94 children (55 boys and 39 girls) with unilateral (28) or bilateral (66) retinoblastoma. The period of observation amounted 5 to 15 years. In 84 children they found advanced changes responding to the fifth grade of the Reese-Ellsworth classification. In 14 cases the tumor expanded behind the eye ball or there was its recurrence. From this group 11 children (78.6%) died. The treatment consisted on application of plates with 60Co, xenon photocoagulation, enucleation, exenteration of the orbit, secondary irradiation of the orbit. The risk factors of the incidence of the orbital changes are discussed.

[Surgical treatment of pigmentary nevi of the conjunctiva].

Eighty persons with histopathologically confirmed diagnosis of pigmentary conjunctival naevi were operated upon in the period 1977-1986. Subjected to an analysis were the age and the sex of the patients as well as the localization, size and histopathological type of the change. Neither of the treated patients showed any naevus turning malignant and there were no recurrences.

[Morphological semen changes in Chlamydia trachomatis infection].

Semen was examined in 150 men patients of the Andrology Clinic for demonstration of Chlamydia trachomatis and for analysis of the effect of this infection on semen quality depression. A correlation was noted between the degree of infection (large number of organisms per field of vision) and such changes as cryptozoospermia, azoospermia, asthenozoospermia, teratozoospermia, oligoasthenozoospermia, asthenoteratozoospermia. Of interest was a high proportion of infection (56%) with Ch. trachomatis in this group.

Clinical trials on chemical radiosensitization of malignant melanoma of the choroid.

The experimental investigations carried out in model systems and on plant, animal or human tissues have demonstrated that it is possible to increase significantly the radiosensitivity of pigmented cells, including hamster melanoma. On the basis of these data, a clinical pilot study was undertaken in order to establish whether a similar methodical approach will prove effective if applied to the radiotherapy of malignant melanoma of the choroid in patients treated with 60Co gamma-rays according to Stallard's technique. Cuprenil and Chelaton Polfa were used as radiosensitizers. The results of therapy differed distinctly in the two groups of patients (receiving or not receiving radiosensitizing drugs), the rate of tumour regression being much higher in those with a parallel pharmacological treatment.
