Efficacy of an ondansetron orally disintegrating tablet: a novel oral formulation of this 5-HT(3) receptor antagonist in the treatment of fractionated radiotherapy-induced nausea and emesis. Emesis Study Group for the Ondansetron Orally Disintegrating Tablet in Radiotherapy Treatment.

A significant number of patients who are receiving radiotherapy experience the distressing side effects of emesis and nausea. Although prophylactic antiemetics are often given to patients who are receiving single-fraction, high-dose radiotherapy to the abdomen, a survey has revealed that antiemetic prophylaxis is not routinely offered to those receiving fractionated radiotherapy. Hence there is a need for an effective treatment of emesis for use in this group of patients. Ondansetron is an effective and well-tolerated antiemetic, which is used for the prevention of both chemotherapy and radiotherapy-induced emesis and nausea. This agent has been developed as a novel freeze-dried oral formulation. Ondansetron orally disintegrating tablets (ondODT) disperse rapidly when placed on the tongue. As the tablet does not need to be swallowed with water, it is a particularly useful formulation for patients who have difficulty with swallowing or who do not feel able to drink. This study was undertaken to investigate the efficacy of ondODT in the treatment of established emesis and nausea induced by radiotherapy. Two doses of ondODT, 8 mg and 16 mg, were compared with placebo in patients who developed emesis and/or moderate/severe nausea after receiving fractionated radiotherapy to sites located between the thorax and the pelvis. The study showed that ondODT was clinically superior to placebo in treating emesis and nausea successfully over a 12-hour period after taking the medication. There were no statistically significant differences between the two doses of ondODT. In the 2 hours after taking the study medication, patients who received ondODT (8 mg and 16 mg) had significantly fewer emetic episodes compared with those who received placebo. They also experienced significantly less nausea. In conclusion, ondODT 8 mg is effective in the treatment of radiotherapy-induced emesis and nausea and provides an effective alternative to the conventional ondansetron tablet.

[The results of radiation and surgical treatment of early vocal cord carcinoma (T1a, T1b)].

Results of surgery treatment from the external access and radiotherapy in early, stage of vocal cords carcinoma were presented. Clinical material consisted of 94 cases with squamous cell carcinoma of vocal cords with stage T1a and T1b treated in Szczecin University Department of Otorhinolaryngology from 1987 to 1996. 51 cases were operated on (26 by chordectomy and 25 by frontolateral laryngectomy). Radiotherapy was applied in 43 patients. The 3 and 5 years' survival rate in the surgery group was 97% and after radiotherapy 88 to 80%. The functional results were also presented. It was concluded that the mode of treatment in early stages of vocal cord carcinoma should be individualized.

[Analysis of early results of combined treatment with glucocorticoids and telecobalt therapy for Graves' disease ophthalmopathy].

Early results of combined use of glucocorticoid administration and irradiation with radioactive cobalt for treatment of oedematous-infiltrative ophthalmopathy associated with Graves' disease have been analyzed in a group of 33 patients including 28 women and 5 men of age between 25 and 66 years (mean age 47.3 years). The combined therapy was a modification of the original method of Bartalena et al. which consisted in the gradual increase of the initial dose of glucocorticoids and prolongation of the period of administration of the drug. The ophthalmic lesions were assessed by thorough ophthalmologic examination and classified according to Werner. The ophthalmopathy index was calculated according to Donaldson. Satisfactory results of treatment have been obtained in 32 patients, with 9 patients being completely relieved from any objective or subjective ophthalmic symptoms (very good results), and 23 patients having still small afflictions originating from the soft tissues of the eye socket, exophthalmos, diplopia during marginal vision and a decreased visual acuity (good results). The clinical recovery was mostly connected with the improvement in the condition of soft tissues of the eye socket, cornea and external ocular muscles and, to a smaller extent, exophthalmos which persisted to some degree and acuity of vision not always attaining normal values. In one person the results of treatment were unsatisfactory despite some improvement. Very good and good results obtained in 97% of patients indicate that the administration of glucocorticoids combined with the irradiation of retrobulbar tissues with radioactive cobalt can now be regarded as the most effective method of treatment of the progressive oedematous-infiltrative ophthalmopathy.

Disappearing bone disease: massive osteolysis of the ribs treated with radiotherapy. Report of a case.

The case of a boy with disappearing bone disease concerning the ribs is reported. The clinical, roentgenographic, immunological and histological studies are described. The patient was treated by radiotherapy. The process of disease stopped in irradiated area of the chest, but five months later appeared beyond that area. The patient was irradiated additionally for the next area and disease was arrested successfully.

Bleomycin labelled with 99mTc for differentiation of breast tumors.

Bleomycin labelled with 99mTc was used to differentiate benign and malignant breast tumors. Breast scintigraphy was performed 15 and 60 min following the IV injection of 5 mCi99mTc bleomycin. Thirty-two patients with breast tumor (14 carcinomas and 18 benign nodular lesions) were examined. Cytologic or histologic verification of the tumor was carried out in all cases. All malignant tumors of the breast in the investigated group of patients revealed significantly increased accumulation of 99mTc-bleomycin.
