[The use of the garamycin sponge in the treatment of infected pseudoarthrosis of the tibia].

The use of the Garamycin sponge in the treatment of infected pseudoarthrosis of the tibia has been presented. The study included 6 male patients aged from 27 to 56 years; the sponge filled the defect after resection of the pseudoarthrosis. The method seems to be the one of choice to support adequate surgical intervention grossly contributing to the final positive result.

[Prolonged interfragmentary variable compression in the treatment of aseptic nonunion of tibial fractures].

The authors present their own experiences with the treatment of nonunion of tibial fractures through application of prolonged interfragmentary variable compression. This method was applied by the authors in thirty six cases of tibial fracture aseptic nonunion. In 33 cases union with a good functional result was achieved in 17 weeks on average. In 2 cases satisfactory union with minimal angulation of the bone fragments was achieved. In one case the method was found to be unsuccessful. Prolonged interfragmentary variable compression is simple, safe and effective in the treatment of aseptic nonunion of tibial fractures.

[Hip stabilizer "Zespol" in the treatment of the femoral neck fractures by the Tylman method].

Zespol hip fixator was used in Tylman treatment for neck of the femur fracture in 15 patients aged 18-64 (mean 49 years). There were 11 Garden IV type and 4 Garden III type fractures. The technique of fixator implantation from posterior approach has been presented. According to the criteria established by Scientific Committee of the XXVII Congress of Polish Orthopedic and Traumatologic Society functional results were rated good in 11 cases and satisfactory in 4. Radiological results were good in 10 cases, satisfactory in 3 and poor in 2 (nonunion in one patient, avascular necrosis of the femoral head in the second patient).

[POLFIX osteosynthesis in treatment of femoral shaft fractures].

The paper presents properties of POLFIX fixator in ostheosynthesis of the femoral shaft fracture and results of treatment with its use. Thirty-six patients with 37 fractures (31 males, 5 females aged 16-72 years) has been operated on. Good result has been achieved in majority of cases (92%), mean fracture healing time was 18 weeks (12-36 weeks). POLFIX system proved to be useful and effective in treatment for femoral shaft fracture; it has many features of biological fixation.

[Soft tissue pathology complicating Zespol external fixation].

A series of 179 patients with lower externally fixed has been reviewed. In 14 cases purulent exudation around Zespol implants occurred, in 37 cases non purulent infection was noted. Insufficient hygiene observation was identified as the chief cause. Management of these conditions is presented, 1 case of allergic reaction and 1 case of malignant neoplastic change are reported.

[Our five year experience in using the Molskich compression-distraction apparatus].

The paper presents five years experience in using the Molskich compression-distraction apparatus compatible with ZESPOL screws. A series of 51 patients was reviewed. Thirty-four cases of nonunion were managed using gradual controlled compression. Shortened limb was elongated in 4 patients (from 4 cm to 8 cm). In 6 cases late correction of inaccurate closed ZESPOL fixation in tibial fractures was done. In remaining 7 cases Molskich fixator was applied primarily for tibial fracture fixation. Good results in 50 cases proved usefulness of the device and encouraged us to present our observations.

[Unstable pelvic fracture with concomitant displacement of the uterus--case report].

The paper deals with the displacement of the uterus observed during management of Malgaigne type pelvic fracture in a 33 years old female. An intrauterine device seen on the radiographs revealed displacement of the uterus towards contralateral side of the pelvis. The reduction of the fracture stabilized with Molski metal clamp reconstituted normal anatomy.
