Examination of the role of oxygen free radicals in bronchial asthma in childhood.

The antioxidant enzyme activities, the lipid peroxidation level, the parameters of glutathione metabolism, and the proportion of haemoglobin oxidation products were determined during the symptom-free period of childhood bronchial asthma. A decreased catalase activity and a significantly reduced glutathione instability were demonstrated as compared to the controls. The results indicate that antioxidant protection of the haemoglobin molecule in asthmatic children is considerably decreased.

[The effect of hemodialysis, using acetate and bicarbonate, on erythrocyte deformability].

The red blood cell filtration parameters were examined in 82 patients with chronic renal failure and 50 healthy controls. The most expressed decrease in deformability was observed in uremic patients who had not been haemodialysed; the values nearest to the healthy ones were observed in transplanted patients. The deformability was considerably improved after haemodialysis, especially when acetate-containing dialyzing solution was applied.

Simple method for the measurement of antioxidants.

Washed red blood cells from preserved blood were used to elaborate a method suitable for the examination of red blood cell deformability and for the detection of changes in oxidative stress, i.e. for the determination of lipid peroxidation and antioxidant enzyme activity changes. The oxidative stress was induced by treatment of red blood cells with hydrogen peroxide.

[Thyroid gland volume. Methods of its determination and their significance].

For the assessment of the volume of the thyroid gland palpation, sonography or scintigraphy can be used. Palpation serves only as orientation, it underrates large goitres and a false positive diagnosis of goitre cannot be ruled out. Sonography uses a static echotomographic method or a dynamic empirical method. Echotomography is at present the most reliable method of assessment of the thyroid volume in vivo. The value of conventional scintigraphy for assessment of the thyroid volume is only historical, more accurate three-dimensional radionuclide diagnostic methods are so far not currently available in this country.

Comparative study of antioxidant enzymes and lipid peroxidation in cord and maternal red blood cells.

The activities of the antioxidant enzymes and lipid peroxidation were compared in the red blood cells from the blood of 50 mothers and the umbilical cord of 50 full-term healthy neonates. The antioxidant activities (except that of catalase) and the lipid peroxidation were found to be higher in the cord blood. These observations differed from the previous literature data: a parallel could be found only with the concept (connected with oxygen radicals) of the early closure of the ductus arteriosus.

Sonography in the evaluation of treatment of differentiated thyroid cancer. First results in 158 patients.

Sonographic examination of soft tissues of the neck was used to search for recurrent thyroid cancer in 158 patients. Two hundred and thirty-six sonographic findings were evaluated. Specificity of the method, regardless of the type of recurrence, was 0.96, sensitivity 0.66, precision 0.81, predictive value of negative finding 0.72. This compares favorably with the results of examination by palpation (sensitivity 0.32 to 0.52, according to the type of recurrence), or with those of palpation combined with thyroglobulin estimation (sensitivity 0.50 to 0.60). Most important was the possibility of early detection of unpalpable recurrent lesions showing no radioiodine uptake, or relapses with low thyroglobulin production. Systematic evaluation of out-patients using sonography could lower the need for radioiodine scans that are necessarily connected with thyroid hormone therapy withdrawal and that are usually performed in in-patients.

[Possibilities of dialysis therapy in irreversible renal failure in rheumatoid arthritis with secondary amyloidosis].

The authors discuss their initial experience with the treatment of secondary amyloidosis in rheumatoid arthritis with irreversible renal failure in patients included in a regular dialyzation programme. The hitherto assembled 15-month experience justifies the inclusion of patients with this cause of irreversible renal failure in a dialyzation programme. The reverse is not only wrong from the medical aspect but is inhuman and interferes with the life of families of these patients. Although the procedure during a regular dialyzation programme of these patients with rheumatoid arthritis with secondary amyloidosis is more complicated, more pretentious and more responsible, it is our medical duty to carry this burden together with the patient.

The effects of Oradexone and Ambroxol pretreatment of the oxidative sensitivity of the red blood cells in preterm infants.

The antioxidant enzyme activities and lipid peroxidation in the red blood cells of cord blood were investigated and compared at different gestation times in preterm and full-term neonates, with and without pretreatment of the pregnant mothers with Oradexone (Dexamethasone) or Ambroxol. Administration of the two drugs not only stimulated the lung surfactant system, but also exerted favourable effects on the antioxidant enzyme activities while the lipid peroxidation was decreased.

Comparison of antioxidant red blood cell enzymes in premature and full-term neonates.

Earlier investigations extended exclusively to comparisons of the red blood cells (RBC) Cu,Zn-superoxide dismutase in neonates of various ages. We have now carried out comparative measurements on the activities of RBC catalase and glutathione peroxidase from the same source. Besides the enzymes, we also measured the lipid peroxidation (LP). The differences between the RBC of premature and full-term neonates were found to be significant. The lower antioxidant enzymatic activity and LP level in premature infants are explained by the immaturity of the biochemical systems and the different lipid composition of the RBC membranes.

Riboflavin (vitamin B2) treatment of neonatal pathological jaundice.

The effect of traditional blue-light and riboflavin combined with blue-light was compared in newborns affected by ABO incompatibility, admitted for exchange transfusion. During the period of preparation for the intervention 14 patients were treated with blue light alone and 14 patients with riboflavin combined with phototherapy. A single dose of 10 mg/kg riboflavin was administered intravenously. The duration of treatment was three hours in both groups. The effect of phototherapy was markedly enhanced by the additional riboflavin, by the end of the 3-hour period a significant fall of serum bilirubin was demonstrated in the 14 patients treated with blue light and riboflavin while in the patients treated with phototherapy alone the bilirubin level continued to rise. There was no difference in the activity of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase and catalase, and in lipid peroxidation between the groups.
