[Functional status of the endocrine and immune systems in women with chronic candidiasis of external genital organs].

Sixty three patients with chronic candidiasis of external genitalia (CCEG) were studied. There was no evidence of hypoparathyroidism or adrenal failure in females with CCEG. The possible role of documented hypothyroidism or diabetes mellitus in these patients' condition should be considered. Though the impairment of the B-or T-immune systems failed to be revealed in the aforementioned patients, some of them demonstrated autoimmune processes in some endocrine glands without any significant impairment of their functional performance.

[Clinico-experimental study of a dried selective medium for isolating fungi in the genus Candida].

The trial of a newly developed dried selective medium for the isolation of fungi of the genus Candida, involving the inoculation of 103 museum yeast strains and 542 specimens of pathological material, has been carried out. The data obtained in this trial indicate that the proposed medium has advantages over wort agar and Sabouraud medium with antibiotics in the germination index, in the ability to ensure fungal growth after the inoculation of pathological material, and in selective properties. The medium ensures the intactness of the morpho-cultural, biochemical and serological properties of the fungi. The results of the trial recommend the newly developed preparation for laboratory practice for the isolation of yeast-like fungi from clinical material in the diagnosis of candidiasis, intestinal microflora disturbances, as well as for isolation of the fungi from various environmental objects.

[Interaction of Candida albicans with macrophages].

Study of the in vitro interaction of mouse peritoneal macrophages with C. albicans has revealed that these macrophages, though easily phagocytizing C. albicans blastospores, are incapable of destroying the fungus. The phagocytic, but not candidostatic, activity of these macrophages has been found to depend on the conditions on their cultivation, as well as on the age and viability of fungal cells. The representatives of 7 C. albicans strains, obtained from various sources and stored at the museum for different spans of time, have shown practically no difference in the character of their interaction with mouse peritoneal macrophages.

[Effect of antibiotics on Candida adhesion to epitheliocytes].

Tetracycline hydrochloride, a broad spectrum antibiotic was studied with respect to its effect on Candida adhesion to epitheliocytes of the oral mucosa. The experiments on mice showed that administration of 0.1 per cent solution of the antibiotic to the animals for 4 days resulted in increasing the adhesive number (AN) and adhesion index (AI) up to 175 and 250 per cent respectively as compared to the control. After 3 weeks of the antibiotic use the AN and AI amounted to 220 and 350 per cent respectively as compared to the control.

[Changes in the adhesion of Candida fungi to the epithelium during the menstrual cycle].

Changes in the adhesion of Candida cells to the mucous membrane of the oral cavity were studied in vitro in experiments with epithelial cells from 12 normal women at various stages of the menstrual cycle. Fungal cells more actively adhered to the epithelial cells obtained at the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle than to those obtained at its luteal phase. At the follicular phase, both the average level of adhesion and the population of epithelial cells with most pronounced adhesive properties increased. The range of variations in adhesion levels was different in individual subjects and varied from 8% to 37% of the individual mean of the whole cycle. The results of this study indicate the existence of the hormonal control of the adhesion of Candida cells to human epithelial cells.

[Immune system function in candidiasis patients].

To compare the clinical picture and the immunological characteristics, 58 candidiasis patients differing by the severity and dissemination of the disease were examined. Chronic candidiasis of the skin and mucous membranes, the most severe and disseminated form of the disease, is associated with a decrease in the number of T-lymphocytes and changes in their subpopulations, as well as high titers of Candida albicans antigen and antibodies to it in blood sera. The immune system of patients with visceral candidiasis and chronic vulvovaginal candidiasis was similar to that of healthy persons in the characteristics under study. Immediate and mixed hypersensitivity occurred in candidiasis patients more frequently than in healthy persons. In extremely severe forms of Candida infection immediate hypersensitivity prevailed.
