Single-sweep polarography of the copper(II)-3-hydroxy-1-p-sulphonatophenyl-3-phenyltriazene complex and its analytical applications.

A polarographic investigation of the copper-3-hydroxy-1-p-sulphonatophenyl-3-phenyltriazene (HSPT) complex in 0.05 M sodium tetraborate medium is described and a simple and sensitive single-sweep polarographic method for the determination of trace amounts of copper in biological samples is proposed. The complex was shown to be Cu(HSPT)2 with log beta' = 11.38. The polarographic wave is caused by the reduction of copper(II) in the adsorbed complex to copper amalgam on the surface of a mercury electrode. The current peak is directly proportional to the concentration of copper in the range 8.0 x 10(-9)-4.0 x 10(-6) M and the detection limit is 5.0 x 10(-9) M.

[Study on the effect of micronucleus with drinking water in the high risk area of stomach cancer].

Mutagenicity/Carcinogenicity of samples of drinking water supplies in the high risk area of stomach cancer was studied with micronucleus test and the epidemiologic method in Zanhuang county, Hebei. The results showed that the micronucleus cell rates in NIH mice induced by concentrated drinking water samples from the high risk area of stomach cancer were higher than those from low risk area and there was close correlation between degree of water concentration and micronucleus cell rates. This corresponded with the results obtained by the epidemiological method showed that the drinking water was obviously mutagenic and that it was closely correlated with the production of stomach cancer.

[Unscheduled DNA synthesis (UDS) in human lymphocytes induced by drinking water in high risk areas of stomach cancer].

Carcinogenicity of drinking water in high risk area of stomach cancer was studied through unscheduled DNA synthesis (UNS) experiment and epidemiological investigation in Zanhuang County, Hebei. Results showed that UDS cpm values in human peripheral blood lymphocytes induced by concentrated drinking water samples from high risk area of stomach cancer were much higher than those from relatively low risk area with a significant dosage-effect relationship between the water samples and UDS cpm values. The larger the cpm values of the drinking water samples were, the higher the stomach cancer mortalities would be. It indicated that the drinking water was obviously mutagenic/carcinogenic and was closely correlative with the incidence of stomach cancer.

Clinical safety of long-term administration of gossypol in 32 cases.

Thirty-two men have taken gossypol acetic acid for long periods (6-10 years). The users had side effects during the entire course. Serum glutamate-pyruvate transaminase (SGPT) was increased in 3 cases and persisted for more than a year. There was a downward trend in plasma potassium level during the loading phase. But, hypokalaemic paralysis did not occur. Results of semen analysis showed that the shorter the duration of gossypol administration, the higher the recovery rate. The positive rate of Et formation of peripheral blood lymphocytes was remarkably decreased. After cessation of gossypol for 6-12 months, Et formation of the group stopping drug showed a recovering trend, but had not recovered to normal. The IgG level in the serum of treatment group was decreased, but was still within normal range.

[Hyperfunctioning parathyroid carcinoma].

Two cases of parathyroid carcinoma with hyperparathyroidism, a relatively rare endocrine tumor are reported. It accounts for approximately 1-4% of all cases of primary hyperparathyroidism. Parathyroid crisis occurred for three times in one case. It is difficult to make an early diagnosis, frequently leading to misdiagnosis and wrong treatment. During operation iatrogenic implant or incomplete resection may occur, resulting in recurrence and repeated operations. It is important to differentiate from hypercalcemia caused by parathyroid adenoma. Neck mass, hypercalcemia usually above 14 mg%, severe decalcification and pathological fractures are characteristic. Fibrosis and inflammatory reaction of the tumor and metastases in the neck lymph nodes are commonly seen at operation. Histologically active tumor cell mitosis, capsular and vascular invasions usually exist. Local recurrences often occur after surgical treatment. If the surgeon can recognized the malignant change and give a curative resection in the initial operation, more gratifying results can be obtained.
