Antenatally diagnosed hygroma colli.

A case of prenatally diagnosed hygroma colli is presented. Prenatal diagnosis, characteristic ultrasonic signs as well as problems of differential diagnosis are discussed. The importance of non-elective routine ultrasound screening in the early detection of fetal congenital malformations is emphasized.

Antenatally diagnosed thanatophoric dysplasia.

A case of antenatally diagnosed thanatophoric dysplasia is described. Other syndromes accompanied by chondrodysplastic tetramicromelia were excluded and diagnosis was based on the narrow thorax, secondary pulmonary hypoplasia and macrocephaly detected by ultrasound and on radiological findings of disturbed bone formation. At the mother's request labour was induced and radiological, anatomic and histological examination of the newborn confirmed the prenatal diagnosis. On basis of the literature, the possible aetiology of the disease is discussed and autosomal recessive heredity is suggested. Attention is focussed on the significant hydramnios which led to the suspicion of fetal malformation. The importance in pregnancy of routine ultrasound screening is emphasized, since such malformations can be detected as early as in midtrimester pregnancy.

Pathomorphological findings of a prenatally diagnosed thanatophoric dwarf.

A case of prenatally diagnosed thanatophoric dysplasia is presented. Other syndromes accompanied by chondrodysplastic tetramicromelia were excluded and diagnosis was based on the narrow thorax, secondary pulmonary hypoplasia and macrocephaly detected by ultrasound and on radiological findings of disturbances of bone formation. At the mother's request labour was induced and radiological, anatomic and histological examination of the newborn confirmed the prenatal diagnosis. By electron microscopy, large conspicuous, homogeneous intracytoplasmic, usually single vacuoles were found in virtually every chondrocyte. Attention is focused on the significant hydramnion which led to the suspicion of fetal malformation. The importance of routine ultrasound screening in pregnancy is emphasised, since such malformations can be detected as early as the midtrimester pregnancy. The use of such methods ensures better maternal care.

Investigations on blood and cerebrospinal fluid lymphocytes in patients suffering from tick-borne encephalitis.

This paper deals with the immuno-pathological characteristics of tick-borne encephalitis. With the appearance of neurological signs, there is a strong T cell reaction in th peripheral blood. The following seven days are characterized by the appearance of specific cell-mediated reaction in the peripheral blood; in the cell-mediated reaction in the peripheral blood; in the cerebrospinal fluid, an increasing number of B cells and specific antibodies can be detected. After a week, the percent positivity of cell-mediated immune reactions is higher and there is a T cell dominance in the cerebrospinal fluid. Intact cellular immunity against specific antigen is required for the management of this disease. There are major differences in the results obtained from patients suffering from meningitis alone and those suffering from meningoencephalitis.

Inhibition of leukocyte migration by tumor-associated antigen and its modification by serum; IgA as a blocking factor.

Based on the investigations of patients the migration inhibition assay proved to be a useful method for the detection of antitumorous cellular immunity. Out of the twenty patients tested 15 gave migratory inhibitory effect against specific tumor antigen. In 8 cases out of the above 15 the blocking activity of sera has been proved. This blocking activity is bound to IgA subclass. The complement played an "unblocking" role. The modifying role of serum factors in cellular immunity against tumors was discussed.

[Experience with ultrasonic placentography].

The authors review their procedure adopted at ultrasonic placentography. Examinations were done before amniocentesis in 21 cases and because of supposed placenta praevia in 111 cases. Patients delivered at thier institution, so the site of placental implantation could be controlled. They had only one "dangerous" mistake: considering a placenta praevia to be only placental implantation on the lower segment, otherwise ultrasonic diagnosis was wrong in 5 cases. So the efficience of our method can be taken as 96,2 per cent. The call attention to the difficulties of of posterior wall placenta diagnosis. They state that ultrasonic placentography is the least harmful among available procedures and also the safest way the localisation of placenta.
