[Circadian rhythm of blood pressure in renovascular hypertensive goats treated with captopril].

Blood pressure (BP) was recorded directly and automatically by a microcomputer aid system for 48 h in normotensive and Goldblatt hypertensive goats. By population-mean cosinor fitting, significant circadian rhythms were found for SBP and DBP in both groups of goats. The BP during nighttime was higher than that during daytime in our goats. An angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor, captopril, was given to hypertensive goats with usual schedule of drug administration (25mg, t.i.d) or form of chronotherapy (62.5 mg, given before the acrophase of BP, q.n). BP significantly decreased throughout the whole day in both treated groups. But there was no statistical difference of cosinor parameters between the effects of BP in these two groups. BP could be decreased by the method of chronotherapy with less amount of drug and less frequency of drug administration.

[A new approach to measurement of thixotropic properties of whole human blood].

With the Low Shear 30 rheometer and its accessory instruments, four torque decay curves of whole human blood from a healthy young man were recorded at shear rate 1.285, 1.747, 2.37 and 3.23 s-1 respectively for pretesting. The modified Levenberg-Marquardt non-linear parameter estimating method was used to calculate the thixotropic parameters by following Huang's equation. The results showed that the thixotropic properties of whole human blood could be measured by recording two torque decay curves. This approach is much easier than Huang's method. We have adopted it to measure the thixotropic properties of whole blood from healthy young men (n = 32) and young women (n = 32). The results were comparable to those in Huang's reports of 1976. The coefficients of variations of most parameters in our measurement were less than those in Huang's reports. Meanwhile, we analysed the advantage in using the new method and made some suggestions to improve the measurement accuracy in human blood thixotropy.

[Studies on the chemical constituents of Dipsacus asper Wall].

Six compounds I-VI were isolated from the roots of Dipsacus asper Wall.. Compounds I, II, III and VI were identified as sucrose, daucosterol, beta-sitosterol and akebia saponin D, respectively. On the basis of spectral analysis and chemical evidence, the structures of two new compounds were established as 3-O-(4-O-acetyl)-alpha-L-arabinopyranosyl-hederagenin 28-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1----6)-beta-D-glucopyranoside (IV) and 3-O-alpha-L-arabinopyranosyl oleanolic acid 28-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1----6)-beta-D-glucopyranoside (V).

[New triterpenoid glycosides from Dipsacus asper Wall].

Two new triterpenoid glycosides were isolated from the ethanol extracts of roots of Dipsacus asper (Wall). Their structures were deduced as 3-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl (1----3)-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl (1----2)-alpha-L-arabinopyranosyl hederagenin 28-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl (1----6)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl ester (VII) and 3-O-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl (1----3)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl (1----3)-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl (1----2)-alpha-L-arabinopyranosyl hederagenin 28-O-beta-glucopyranosyl (1----6)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl ester (VIII), based on spectral analysis and chemical evidences as well as results of 2D-HPTLC.

[A preliminary survey on the growing tempo of Chinemys reevesii (Gray)].

The growing tempo of tortoises is closely related with the temperature and intake of food. In suitable temperature range (20-28 degrees C), the intake increases with the rise of temperature and the growth accordingly accelerates. In the dormant period, the tortoise consumes more energy as ambient temperature rises.

[The establishment of hemorheological data base and its applications].

This hemorheological data base was established with an Apple II computer. The covering technique was applied to deal with its lacks of memories. This data base had a mutual administration system and complete managing functions including inputting, inquiring, printing, transferring, revising functions and so on. More than twenty hemorheological parameters involving apparent viscosities of whole human blood, plasma viscosity, viscoelasticity and thixotropy indices, were saved in the way of paging mode. Meanwhile, this data base had a common mathematical statistics system in recently medical use. It included monovariable linear and nonlinear regressions, t-test, multiple linear regression, cluster analysis etc. Therefore, this data base can be conveniently utilized to analyze the hemorheological data comprehensively. Besides the establishment of normal hemorheological indices, this data base equipped a primary method of quantitative diagnosis through hemorheological indices, it gave a new method to diagnose some diseases and to observe their curing process.

[Investigation report on the resources of Chinemys reevesii (Gray)].

Our on-the-spot investigation has indicated that the tortoise population as natural resources has been on the decrease ever since the sixties. The reason for the decrease lies in some natural factors as well as the indiscriminate catching and killing by man. As a result, the female tortoises remarkably over whelm the male ones in number, which leads to a drop in the natural rate of breeding.

Modulation of the GTPase activity of the chloroplast F1-ATPase by ATP binding at noncatalytic sites.

Although the binding of nucleotides at the noncatalytic sites of F1-ATPase has been regarded as probably having some type of regulatory function, only limited observations have been reported that support such a role. We present here results showing that the presence of ATP at noncatalytic sites can give a fivefold enhancement of the rate of GTP hydrolysis by the chloroplast F1-ATPase. Heat-activation of the chloroplast F1-ATPase in the presence of ATP, followed by column separation from the medium nucleotides gives an enzyme with two of the three noncatalytic sites filled with ATP. In contrast, heat-activation in the presence of ADP gives an enzyme with only one noncatalytic site filled with ADP. Such an enzyme with two noncatalytic sites empty catalyzes MgGTP hydrolysis only very slowly. The filling of a second noncatalytic site with ATP by exposure of the enzyme to ATP without Mg2+ present, followed by column separation, markedly increases the rate of GTP hydrolysis. A further increase occurs when a third noncatalytic site is filled by exposure to Mg2+ and ATP. The rate of MgATP hydrolysis is the same for the enzyme heat-activated in the presence of ATP or ADP, probably because MgATP, unlike MgGTP, rapidly binds to both catalytic and noncatalytic sites.

The diagnostic and prognostic value of renal allograft biopsy.

We prospectively studied 89 patients to assess the diagnostic use of renal allograft biopsy in the first three months after transplantation. These biopsies were done in patients in whom diagnosis was not clear or clinical rejection was deemed to be severe. Clinical diagnosis at initial biopsy was compared with the morphological diagnosis. To determine if morphological data improved the prognostic usefulness of the clinical data, we performed multiple logistic regression relating clinical variables at initial biopsy and histological changes in the transplant to the outcome of 120 patients one year after biopsy. The clinical and morphological diagnosis differed in 41 of 89 patients (46%). Of 120 patients in the prognostic study, 35 returned to dialysis during the first year following transplantation. Using multiple logistic regression, a categorical variable that took into account both the serum creatinine and its rate of change before biopsy was the best clinical predictor of return to dialysis. Further increase in chi 2 occurred with type of donor, number of transfusions, and age. Using the clinical variables we produced an index, from 0 to 1 to predict outcome. Only 8 had index less than 0.2, of whom 7 returned to dialysis. The best morphological predictor of outcome was interstitial hemorrhage. Further increase in chi 2 was obtained with vascular endothelial proliferation, glomerular endothelial swelling, and glomerular necrosis. With an index derived from the morphological variables only 11 had index less than 0.2, of whom 9 returned to dialysis. Combining both clinical and morphological data, the best predictor of return to dialysis was interstitial hemorrhage, followed by creatinine, glomerular endothelial swelling, and type of donor. Using both clinical and morphological variables we produced another index to predict outcome. A group of 65 patients had index greater than 0.8, of whom 63 (94%) did not return to dialysis, and 18 patients had index less than 0.2, 17 of whom returned to dialysis. The remaining 12 patients in the dialysis group and 15 in the nondialysis group had indices greater than 0.2 less than 0.8. We conclude that a transplant biopsy yields important diagnostic and prognostic information. Unexpected diagnoses were made in 46% of cases. The addition of morphological data to the clinical data available at time of biopsy greatly improved the prediction of return to dialysis.
