Restoration of venous outflow by simultaneous creation of an arteriovenous shunt and pedicle flap using a rat model of foot replantation.

Replantation of amputated rat feet utilizing an efferent arteriovenous shunt constructed between the distal posterior tibial artery and the proximal posterior tibial vein, in the absence of all other venous drainage, provides an alternative pathway to the normal venous drainage in a replanted rat foot. However, this substitute venous drainage was insufficient to prevent progressive ischemia and necrosis of some or all of a replanted rat foot. When a cutaneous pedicle flap supplemented the arteriovenous shunt, venous drainage was much improved, tissue hypoxia and edema began to subside on the third day, severe tissue necrosis was prevented, and seven of eight feet replanted by this technique survived. These observations may be useful in replantation in humans when veins in the amputated part are too small to be used or so damaged that they cannot be repaired or reconstructed by a vein graft, but arteries can still provide a means of returning blood from the amputated part. Constructing an alternative pathway to the normal venous drainage pattern may allow severely damaged parts to survive after replantation.

[Clinical and experimental study of qing wen oral liquid in the treatment of viral infectious fever].

110 cases of viral fever patients receiving Qing Wen oral liquid were observed. The total effective rate was 94.5% in comparing to 86.5% in the control group, P < 0.01. The shortening of time concerning both the beginning on the declining of fever and normalization of body temperature were obvious in comparison with the control. The remedy was also effective in improving symptoms and signs, alleviating renal failure, improving microcirculation and providing bi-directional regulation to the immune system, thus the progression of the disease was controlled. Animal experiments showed that Qing Wen oral liquid could protect the rabbits with hemorrhagic fever, delay the incubation period and the peak of fever, lower the febrile index and PGE content, improve the hemorheology and enhance the cell-mediated immunity in CSF.

Adult

Extraglomerular lesions in kidneys of mink with encephalitozoonosis.

Extraglomerular renal lesions were studied by light and electron microscopy in 13 farmed mink which showed cataractous eyes associated with spontaneous encephalitozoonosis. The extraglomerular renal lesions consisted of multiple renal cysts, multifocal-to-coalescing interstitial nephritis and vasculitis. Tubular cysts of varying size were present in the corticomedullary junction and medulla. The inflammatory infiltrates were composed mostly of lymphocytes and plasma cells and usually accompanied an interstitial fibrosis. Vasculitis, perivasculitis and sclerotic arteries were frequently seen.

Piezo-electric lithotripter in the treatment of pediatric renal calculi.

EDAP LT-01 lithotripter was used to treat 23 stone events in 17 pediatric patients. The mean age of the patients at treatment was 7.2 years, the youngest being 18 months. The mean stone size was 1.22 cm. Thirty-six sessions of extra corporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) treatment were necessary for the 23 stones. The focal point pressure power was 60-100% (540-900 Bar), the treating period 0.5-1 hour and the frequency 1.25-2.5 Hz. The patients were stone free in 2 months. IVU or ultrasonography showed that there was no renal dysfunction and retardation of renal growth after ESWL. Appropriate ESWL monotherapy in pediatric patients may produce results comparable to those in adults. Factors known to affect treatment results in adults also influence the results in children and should be considered in terms of the applicability of ESWL to any particular pediatric patient.

The hepatitis B virus-encoded transcriptional trans-activator hbx appears to be a novel protein serine/threonine kinase.

To study the functional mechanism of the hepatitis B virus (HBV) X (hbx) gene product, we have expressed the hbx protein in E. coli and purified it by HPLC. The purified hbx protein was shown to be active in transactivating transcription directed by the LTR sequence of HIV-1. The hbx protein was found to have an intrinsic serine/threonine protein kinase activity. The hbx protein was detected in hepatitis B virions, and tryptic phosphopeptide maps of the hbx protein phosphorylated in the virion and of the in vitro phosphorylated bacterially expressed hbx protein were similar. Inactivation of the hbx protein by heat, protein-denaturing agents, or an ATP affinity analog, p-fluorosulfonylbenzoyl 5'-adenosine, resulted in loss of both protein kinase activity and trans-activation activity. These results suggest that the HBV-encoded trans-activator hbx is a novel protein kinase.

Studies on structures of some platinum complexes with 1,1-cyclopropanedicarboxylate.

The crystal structures of [Pt(NH3)2CPrDCA].H2O (I), [Pt(CH3NH2)2CPrDCA] (II), and [Pt(dmbn) CPrDCA].2.5H2O (III) (where CPrDCA is 1,1-cyclopropanedicarboxylate; dmbn is 2,3-dimethyl-2,3-butyldiamine) are determined. Compound I crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pnma with the cell dimensions: a = 6.517(2), b = 9.709(3), c = 14.205(5) A, Z = 4, R = 0.058. Compound II is monoclinic with space group P2(1)/n, a = 9.648(3), b = 8.720(2), c = 12.770(4) A, beta = 107.12(2), Z = 4, R = 0.059. Compound III belongs to the monoclinic system space group P2(1)/m with the cell dimensions: a = 6.494(1), b = 19.638(3), c = 6.606(1)A, beta = 94.44(1), Z = 2, R = 0.038. Electronic structures of the complexes are studied and the correlation between structure of the amine ligands and biological activity of the complexes is explored.

[Quantitative study on infestation and distribution of human Demodex on the face].

We have tried to use 1.2 cm x 5 cm (6 cm2) adhesive cellophane tape technique for quantitative detection of Demodex. 618 mites were detected on the 24 tapes applied on various parts of the face of a healthy individual. In an investigation of 8 person-times, the numbers of mites found on various parts of the face were in the following order: upper-cheek (233), mid-cheek (153), lower-cheek (114), chin (78), forehead (59.5), nose (55), infraorbital (54.5), paraoral (49.5), nasal groove (45), mites found on other parts being negligible. Demodex brevis were found scattering singly on the tapes, while D. follicutorum were found 1-6 in number in one or several follicles. All of them were in the follicle opening, indicating that transmission was readily affected through direct or indirect contacts. The results also showed that when a large number of mites were sticked off, the intensity of infestation was decreased.

Adult

[The discovery and study on invasive strain of Escherichia coli O121].

A strain of Enteroinvasive Escherichia coli was isolated from the stool with blood and mucus of a child suffering from acute diarrhea. The strain shows the following characteristics: rapid fermentation of glucose (with gas), no fermentation of lactose, beta-galactosidase reaction positive, growth in acetate media, lysine decarboxylase negative, non-motility causing keratoconjunctivitis in guinea pigs and invading into epithelial cells, with a plasmid of 140 Md, Serotype is O121:H- which is a new serotype of Enteroinvasive Escherichia coli.
