[A 40 Hz event-related potential detecting system based on correlation-threshold method].

A 40 Hz event related potential(ERP) detecting system is introduced here. The system employs the elliptic--type filters which have excellent edge features to extract signals of narrow-band frequency. It exploits the correlation--threshold method proposed by us to cancel the muscle artifacts. We also realizes the automatic control of experiment procedure and statistical data processing in microcomputer.

Reinnervation after end-to-side nerve coaptation in a rat model.

We assessed the effectiveness of end-to-side nerve coaptation by evaluating the extent of reinnervation and the integrity of the donor nerve in the rat. Fifty-six Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into "fresh" and "predegenerated" (delayed) repair groups with or without a window in the perineurium. The right peroneal nerve was cut and sutured to the tibial nerve in an end-to-side fashion. Two and 3 months postoperatively, we measured the nerve conduction velocity (NCV) of the peroneal and tibial nerves, took dry muscle weights, and performed histologic studies. Peroneal NCV recovered up to 71% (2 mo) and 79% (3 mo), and tibial NCV recovered up to 88% (2 mo) and 91% (3 mo). The latter results indicate that this procedure had a slightly negative effect on donor tibial NCV. Dry weight of the tibialis anterior muscle returned to 60% (2 mo) and 82% (3 mo) of that of the contralateral side. Histologic results showed that there were numerous regenerating axons in the distal end of the peroneal nerve. Presence of a window in the perineurium improved the histologic profile significantly.

[Phosphorus loss potential of soil-water in sites of the main rice-yield area in the Northern Zhejiang].

Phosphorus (P) loss potential and its environmental impact from soil-water were surveyed in Jiashan Yuyao, Deqing and Yuhang, named main rice-yield areas in Northern Zhejiang province China. High P input has resulted in soil P accumulation. Higher soil Olsen-P contributed its bio-available P, water extracted P and increased soil P loss potential. The role of P in paddy soils is of environmental rather than agronomic concern in the process of soil P build-up. During the no-rice time, total P (TP) concentration in the various water including ditch drain inside/outside field, field surface water and pipe drain et al are over the critical values associated with accelerated waters eutrophication. The average proportion of dissolved reactive P (DRP) concentration in TP was 40%, however, these current DRP levels in partly ditch drain outside field and surface or ground water in no-rice time could not caused serious impact to the outside waters nearby rice-yield agriculture area. No significant line correlation between soil P tests and P in field surface water was found in no-rice time due to differences in field tillage among rice-yield areas, while P application increased both soil P and its correspondingly field surface P level after rice was planted at the same time.

[Study on the effects of DNA and natural killer cell damage induced by microcystins LR].

OBJECTIVE: Microcystin is a group of algae toxin which causes liver cancer. In this paper we tried to study the carcinogenic and tumor promotion mechanism of Microcystin LR (MCLR). METHODS: The single cell microgel electrophoresis assay (MGE) and 3H-TdR releasing assay were used to study the effects of on DNA damage and natural killer cell (NK cell) activity. RESULTS: The different doses of MCLR caused DNA damage in rat lymphocytes compared to 0.85% NaCl. However, no time-dependent relationship and dose dependent relationship between MCLR and DNA migration were observed, and the DNA damage was recovered rapidly after MCLR treatment. At the same time MCLR reduced NK cells activity in mice. CONCLUSION: The above results provide some evidence on the mechanisms of carcinogenicity and promotional effects of MCLR at cellular and molecular levels.

[Method on ozone generation with strong ionization discharge].

This paper presents the formed methods of strong ionization discharge of dielectric barrier and plasma chemical reaction process of ozone generation. Ozone combination and decomposition are controlled by electric field intensity and electron energy. Therefore, new technologies with thinner dielectric layers (230 microns) of model alpha Al2O3 and narrow discharge gap (110 microns) are introduced, and strong ionization discharge is gained which reduced field (E) and electron average energy are more than 400Td and 10 eV respectively. Ozone concentration reaches to 200 g/m3 and ozone producing efficiency is 100 g/(kW.h). Ozone generator of big yield and miniaturization with module assembled method is realized.

[Structure and function of pancreatic microcirculation].

To gain an insight into the relationship between structure and function in pancreatic microcirculation, observations were carried out in 9 corpse, 30 monkeys, 24 dogs, 62 Wistar rats and 24 rabbits by the use of scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy with the technique of retaining microcirculatory dynamic and tissular information in the static specimens, and/or by intravital fluorescence microscopy with FITC-labeled erythrocytes. The results showed: there were two capillary beds destined for the endocrine and exocrine parts of pancreas between the intralobular arteriole and venule; the blood of pancreatic portal circulation flowed from the endocrine to the exocrine part; each pancreatic lobule was supplied by a single centrally located intralobular artery and there was no anastomosis between the intralobular arterioles or any of their branches, so they were end arteries; the physiological blood flow was about 1.18 +/- 0.05 nl/min per capillary with stable capillary perfusion pattern; a profound decreased functional capillary density and capillary perfusion was observed in the early phase of acute pancreatitis. These results suggest that pancreatic lobule is a structured and functional basic unit of pancreatic microcirculation, insulo-acinar portal circulation represents the basic feature of the pancreatic microcirculation, and the intralobular arteriole, being an end artery, forms the anatomical basis of the pancreatic microcirculatory disturbance during acute pancreatitis.

The effect of intraischemic mild hypothermia on focal cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury.

BACKGROUND: The protective role of intraischemic mild hypothermia on brain injury associated with cerebral ischemia/reperfusion was investigated using a localized, no-flow cerebral ischemia/reperfusion model in rats in vivo. METHODS: Male Wistar rats weighing 250-350 g were anesthetized lightly with halothane. All rats were randomly allocated into two series experiments the first of which was for study of infarct volume and the second of which was for study of NO (nitric oxide) content, and then subjected to various time intervals of focal ischemia followed by reperfusion. The intraischemic mild hypothermia was induced by feedback-regulated semiconductor cooling block in a group of these rats. Normothermia groups were considered as the control groups. The infarct volume and the NO content of rat brain were measured in different groups and hours respectively. RESULTS: The infarct volume of mild hypothermia group was significantly different from that of normal control group within the time window of 10 min (P < 0.05), infarcted brain volumes in hypothermic rats were significantly smaller than in normothermic rats, for the time window of 1 h there was no significant difference in the infarct volume between mild hypothermic group and normothermic control group (P > 0.5). Furthermore, increased tissue levels of NO, a potential mediator of cerebral injury in the brain following focal ischemia were depressed by mild hypothermia. CONCLUSIONS: It is suggested that localized mild hypothermia may be a protective against focal cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury and that the decreased nitric oxide production in the brain may serve as the protective mechanism of hypothermia.

[Studies on association between lipoprotein lipase gene polymorphisms of Pvu II site and hypertriglyceridemics in Chinese].

OBJECTIVE: To explore whether Pvu II restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLP) in the lipoprotein lipase(LPL) gene are associated with hypertriglyceridemics (HTG). METHODS: Pvu II restriction fragment length polymorphisms in the lipoprotein lipase gene on a sample of 135 HTG patients and 193 age-matched healthy individuals in Chengdu area were detected with the method of PCR-RFLP. RESULTS: The P+ P+ genotype frequency and P+ allelic frequency of LPL gene for HTG cases are higher than those for control groups (0.460 vs 0.337,P<0.05; 0.689 vs 0.565,P<0.01). The serum levels of TGapoCII, apoCIII, apoE and TG/HDL-C in P+P+ genotype are higher than those in P-P- genotype(P<0.05). CONCLUSION: The results suggest that P+P+ genotype in the lipoprotein lipase gene is associated with susceptibility to hypertriglyceridemics in Chinese population.

Glycosylation of the human prostacyclin receptor: role in ligand binding and signal transduction.

Prostacyclin, a potent vasodilator and inhibitor of platelet aggregation, acts through a cell-surface G protein-coupled receptor [prostacyclin (IP)]. The human (h) IP contains two consensus sites for N-linked glycosylation (N(7) and N(78)). However, the role of glycosylation is unknown. Mutant receptors (N(7)-Q(7),N(78)-Q(78) and N(7),N(78)-Q(7),Q(78)) were generated by replacing N(7) and/or N(78) with Q's. Receptor glycosylation was similar in the wild-type and N(7)-Q(7) and was inhibited with tunicamycin. N(78)-Q(78) and N(7),N(78)-Q(7),Q(78) demonstrated little or no glycosylation. Membrane localization was reduced for each mutant concomitant with impaired glycosylation. Partial localization to the plasma membrane allowed direct examination of the effect of glycosylation on IP function. High-affinity binding to N(7)-Q(7) was similar (K(d) = 21.7 +/- 1.7 nM, n = 4) to that of the wild-type receptor (K(d) = 24.3 +/- 3.6 nM, n = 4), despite a reduced value for B(max) (0.35 +/- 0.03 fmol/mg of protein versus 3.34 +/- 0.52 fmol/mg of protein, n = 4). Binding to N(78)-Q(78) (B(max) = 0.27 +/- 0.03 fmol/mg of protein, n = 3; K(d) = 149.1 +/- 11.1, n = 3) and N(7),N(78)-Q(7),Q(78) (no specific binding) was further impaired. Agonist-induced adenylyl cyclase activation was reduced in N(7)-Q(7) cells, whereas N(78)-Q(78) cells responded only to high concentrations of iloprost and N(7),N(78)-Q(7),Q(78) were unresponsive. Inositol phosphate generation was evident only with the wild-type. Only the wild-type and N(7)-Q(7) receptors underwent agonist-induced sequestration. Our findings demonstrate greater glycosylation at N(78) compared with N(7). The extent of N-linked glycosylation of hIP may be important for membrane localization, ligand binding, and signal transduction.

[Acid producing potential of a lead/zinc mine tailings at Lechang, Guangdong Province].

The acid producing potential of a Pb/Zn mine tailings at Lechang City, Guangdong Province were studied using both net acid generation (NAG) and net acid production potential (NAPP) methods. The pyritic and total sulfur contents of the tailings were 12.57% and 18.68% respectively. The NAG and NAPP values were H2SO4 220 kg.t-1 and 326 kg.t-1, and both the NAG and NAPP results indicated that the tailings had high acid forming potential. NAG was more accurate than NAPP in predicting acid forming potential of the tailings due to the uncompleted oxidization of pyritic sulfur. Analysis of samples from two profiles test indicated that the acidification major occurred on the surface (0-20 cm) of the tailings because of limited oxygen diffusion and had little effects on the tailings at lower horizons. pH values were negatively related to EC, indicated that the acid released accelerate dissolution of the solid matrix and increase in both cations and actions in solution, the extractable Pb, Zn, Cu and Cd at the acidifying tailings surface.
