Tinea versicolor of the scalp.

BACKGROUND: Tinea versicolor (TV) is commonly described on the trunk without giving attention to involvement of the scalp. We examined cases with dandruff with and without TV on the body to see how frequent Malassezia furfur (M. furfur) is present in dandruff scales. METHODS: A total of 80 patients were examined mycologically using KOH preparation for the presence of M. furfur in dandruff scales. RESULTS: M. furfur was found in dandruff scales in 7 out of 20 men with TV (35%) and 5 out of 20 women with TV (25%), whereas it was absent in another 40 cases without clinical lesions of TV on the body. CONCLUSIONS: Attention must be paid to TV of the hairy scalp. Cases of dandruff, especially those accompanied with TV of the body, must be examined for the presence of M. furfur because of its prognostic significance. Positive cases should be treated accordingly.

Ultrastructure sperm defects in addicts.

Addiction is a major problem confronting the whole world today. Disruption of interpersonal relationships, economic loss, and crimes against property are frequent consequences. Harm to the individual himself extends to all physiological systems. In the present study, we examined semen samples of six addicts by light and electron microscopy. Oligoasthenospermia was demonstrated in five patients, and necrospermia was observed in one patient. Severe degenerative changes of the sperm heads were noted. Granular condensation of the chromatin with nuclear vacuoles was demonstrated. Persistent cytoplasmic droplets were frequently observed. Degenerated tails showing fragmentation of the plasma membranes and numerical aberrations of the 9 + 2 configuration were also present, together with thickened and disorganized fibrous sheaths. These results confirm the deleterious effects of addiction on the entire sperm structure.

Ultrastructural observations in Darier's disease.

Two patients with Darier's disease--diagnosed clinically by the presence of characteristic keratotic papules in seborrheic areas--were biopsied for light- and electron-microscopic studies. Light microscopy revealed typical histologic features of Darier's disease. Ultrastructural studies showed the presence of cytoplasmic processes projecting from the basal keratinocytes (basal keratinocyte herniations) into the underlying dermis through small defects in the basal lamina, which was intact in some areas but in other locations showed thickening, irregularity, and replication. Widening of the lamina lucida with partial or complete disappearance of hemidesmosomes were noted in many areas.
