Comment on "Fringe projection profilometry with nonparallel illumination: a least-squares approach".

We comment on the recent Letter by Chen and Quan [Opt. Lett.30, 2101 (2005)] in which a least-squares approach was proposed to cope with the nonparallel illumination in fringe projection profilometry. It is noted that the previous mathematical derivations of the fringe pitch and carrier phase functions on the reference plane were incorrect. In addition, we suggest that the variation of carrier phase along the vertical direction should be considered.

Advanced iterative algorithm for phase extraction of randomly phase-shifted interferograms.

An advanced random phase-shifting algorithm to extract phase distributions from randomly phase-shifted interferograms is proposed. The algorithm is based on a least-squares iterative procedure, but it copes with the limitation of the existing iterative algorithms by separating a frame-to-frame iteration from a pixel-to-pixel iteration. The algorithm provides stable convergence and accurate phase extraction with as few as three interferograms, even when the phase shifts are completely random. The algorithm is simple, fast, and fully automatic. A computer simulation is conducted to prove the concept.

The oxazolomycins: a structurally novel class of bioactive compounds.

Oxazolomycin, first isolated in 1985, is a novel bioactive compound, exhibiting potent antiviral, antibacterial and cytotoxic activity, and is now known to be the parent of a wider class of compounds. The broad-spectrum activity of oxazolomycin has been attributed to its protonophoric properties. This review outlines the isolation, structural determination, biosynthesis, bioactivity, biological mode of action and synthesis of all members of this compound class. Significantly, the oxazolomycins appear to offer not only a completely novel chemotype as a bioactive lead structure, but also a chemotype, which also exhibits an unusual biological mode of action.
