Low-Carbon-Residue Multi-Principal-Element Magnetic Alloys for Excellent Microwave Absorption.

Magnetic alloy/carbon composites are promising microwave absorbers due to abundant interfaces and multiple loss mechanisms. However, reducing carbon content while maintaining uniform magnetic component distribution remains challenging. We report a spray-drying strategy to address this. By tuning nitrate precursor ratios and optimizing thermal treatment, we synthesize low-carbon alloy/oxide microspheres with uniformly distributed alloy phases. Limiting carbon content improves impedance matching, while selective nitrate precipitation creates a magnetic alloy architecture that suppresses nanoparticle agglomeration and enhances interfacial polarization. For this multiscale synergistic polarization is achieved: highly conductive Cu maximizes conduction loss, insulating Al2O3 buffers impedance, and Mn provides abundant polarization centers. The resulting microspheres exhibit tunable, exceptional performance. The attenuation-dominated FeCuMn system achieves -48.2 dB minimum reflection loss at 1.5 mm thickness. The impedance-matched FeCuAl system delivers an ultra-broad effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 5.12 GHz. Additionally, the FeAlMn system demonstrates superior polarization miniaturization for optimal absorption at extremely thin matching thicknesses. This work provides a practical strategy for designing electromagnetic composite structures with tunable component distribution.

Causal effect of the age at first birth with depression: a mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to explore the causal relationship between age at first birth (AFB) and depression. METHODS: Using the univariable Mendelian randomization (UVMR) and multivariable Mendelian randomization (MVMR) methods to examine the potential correlation between age at first birth (AFB) and major depressive disorder and postpartum depression. A public database was used to obtain the genome-wide association studies (GWAS) summary data. We put inverse-variance-weighted (IVW) as the primary method in Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis and used sensitivity analysis to confirm the robustness of our result. RESULTS: We found a significant causal association between AFB and major depressive disorder by using the IVW algorithm (odd ratio [OR] 0.826; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.793 - 0.861; P = 4.51 × 10- 20). MR-Egger, weighted median, simple mode and weighted mode method concluded the same result (P < 0.05). During the sensitivity analysis, the heterogeneity test (Q-value = 55.061, df = 48, P = 2.81 × 10- 01, I2 = 12.82%) and the leave-one-out plot analysis confirmed the stability of the results. The outcomes of the pleiotropy test (MR-Egger intercept = 8.932 × 10- 3. SE = 6.909 × 10- 3. P = 2.02 × 10- 01) and MR_PRESSO global test (P = 2.03 × 10- 01) indicated there is no pleiotropy. CONCLUSION: There is solid evidence that a higher age at first birth is associated with a lower risk of major depressive disorder.

Increased expression of heat shock protein 72 protects renal proximal tubular cells from gentamicin-induced injury.

The nephrotoxicity of gentamicin (GM) has been widely recognized. Heat shock protein 72 (HSP72) has been reported to be a cytoprotectant. However, its cytoprotective effect against GM induced kidney injury has not yet been studied. In this study, we investigated the cytoprotective effect of HSP72 on GM-induced nephrotoxicity in vitro. Human Kidney tubular cell line, HK-2 cells were divided into four groups: control group, GM group (cells incubated with GM only), heat shock (HS) group (cells incubated at 43 degrees C for 30 min), and GM plus HS group, respectively. Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release increased time-dependently from 24 hr to 96 hr compared to the data of cells treated with GM only. Results of NAG activities, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities and malondialdehyde (MDA) content were similar to that of the LDH release. The amount of HSP72 positive cells increased significantly at 72 hr after cells were treated with GM only. Both HSP72 protein and gene expression increased significantly at 72 hr when cells were treated with GM. On the other hand, HS induced HSP72 expression markedly. Pretreatment of HS inhibited HK-2 cells from GM-induced injury. It could reduce LDH release and NAG activity. HS also increased SOD activity, and decreased MDA content when cells were damaged by GM. These findings suggested that HS may protect kidney cells from GM-induced injury. Pre-induction of HSP72 may provide therapeutic strategies for nephrotoxicity induced by GM.

Rapid and stable buffer exchange system using InSitu Chip suitable for multicolor and large-scale whole-mount analyses.

Whole-mount in situ hybridization (WISH) and whole-mount immunohistochemistry (WIHC) are informative methods commonly used to analyze the spatiotemporal and quantitative distribution of mRNAs and proteins. However, these methods require multiple buffer changes and the imposition of time- and nerve-consuming efforts. To facilitate the whole-mount analyses, we innovated an easy and one-step buffer exchange system named "InSitu Chip" based on a single column containing two attached filters. This system improves the speed and stabilizes the different steps of the currently available protocols, providing fast and uniform operations. The InSitu Chip system is especially appropriate for multicolor whole-mount analyses using fluorescent detection. Furthermore, the InSitu Chip system is also suitable for large-scale whole-mount experiments associated with genome, transcriptome, and/or proteome analyses requiring high-throughput, high-quality, and reproducible results. Using the InSitu Chip, about 1,500 gene expression patterns were stably surveyed in ascidian Ciona intestinalis juveniles.

Effect of rare earth element europium on amaranthin synthesis in Amarathus caudatus seedlings.

Considering the resemblances between Eu3+ and Ca2+ in their atomic radius and structures of the valence electron, the effects of Eu3+ on amaramthin synthesis in Amarathus caudatus seedling were studied. Eu3+ had both promoting and inhibiting effects on amaramthin synthesis. The optimum promoting concentration and half inhibiting concentration of Eu3+ to synthesis of amaranthin were 0.4 mmol/L and 2.5 mmol/L, respectively. In the dark, A23187 (ions carrier) could carry Eu3+ into cells through the Ca2+ channel. When Ca2+ was chelated with EGTA, the synthesis of amaranthin could be partly retrieved by Eu3+. Eu3+ treatment could also activate Ca2+- ATPase on plasma membrane. Moreover, the sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis patterns of total proteins from the plants treated by Eu3+ and Ca2+ were similar but slightly different in the contents. It suggested that the effects of Eu3+ and Ca2+ on amaranthin synthesis were similar. After being treated by Eu3+ or Ca2+, the outside Ca2+ could enter into cells to promote synthesis of amaranthin. The results above indicated that Eu3+ might replace Ca2+ in the calcium/calmidulindependent phytochrome signal transduction system and play important roles in plant development by promoting calcium transportation across plasma membrane.

[Preliminary results of foldable intraocular lens implantation in children with cataract].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the result of phacoemulsification and foldable intraocular lens implantation (IOL) through a small incision in children with cataract. METHODS: Phacoemulsification with anterior vitrectomy and foldable IOL implantation in the capsular bag was performed in 37 eyes of 28 children aged 3 - 15 years (mean 7 years), including 27 eyes of congenital cataract and 10 eyes of traumatic cataract. The visual acuity, corneal curvature and possible complication were followed up for 10 months (range, 3 - 15 months). RESULT: The best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) of congenital cataract were all >/= 0.1, and 59.3% >/= 0.5. All the BCVA of cases with traumatic cataract >/= 0.3, and 80% >/= 0.5. The surgically induced astigmatism (SIA) was (1.18 +/- 0.65) D, (0.67 +/- 0.59) D and (0.60 +/- 0.39) D in one week, one month, and three months respectively after the operation, and it was stable in the postoperative one month. Secondary cataract occurred in 5 cases (13.5%), and no other complications were found. CONCLUSIONS: Phacoemulsification and foldable IOL implantation through a small incision in children with cataract can reduce early post-operative astigmatism and shorten the period of visual rehabilitation. It is a safe procedure with milder inflammatory reaction and less complication.
