Efficient improvement of laser beam quality by coherent combining in an improved Michelson cavity.

The efficient improvement of laser beam quality is demonstrated by coherent combining of two Nd:YVO4 lasers in an improved Michelson cavity. When the two lasers are separately operated with beam qualities of M(x)2 = 1.74 and M(y)2 = 1.34 for laser 1 and M(x)2 = 1.53 and M(y)2 = 1.39 for laser 2, by coherent combining of the two lasers, a single beam output exceeding 2 W with a nearly perfect TEM00 mode (M(x)2 = 1.08, M(y)2 = 1.04) is obtained. Moreover, it can withstand environmental perturbations with no change in beam quality or output power and has the potential for scaling to much higher output power with high beam quality by coherent addition of multiple lasers in this configuration.

Configuration to improve second-harmonic-generation conversion efficiency.

The dependence of second-harmonic-generation (SHG) conversion efficiency on the intercrystal phase shift between two nonlinear crystals is analyzed with heuristic theory, and a novel scheme for SHG with two cascaded nonlinear crystals and a polarization modulator is proposed. More than 30 W output power is obtained experimentally at 532 nm with 70% external doubling efficiency. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest conversion efficiency obtained with LiB3O5 crystal external frequency doubling. This scheme provides a simple and effective method for improving second-harmonic conversion efficiency.

High-efficiency 266-nm output of a KBe2BO3F2 crystal.

Fourth-harmonic generation of a Nd:YAG laser has been achieved with a conversion efficiency of 30.6% in a KBeBO3F2 crystal of thickness 1.8 mm. The acceptance angle at wavelength 532 nm has also been measured.

Generation of vacuum-ultraviolet light by an optically contacted, prism-coupled KBe2BO3F2 crystal.

We have demonstrated the second harmonic of a frequency-tripled Nd:YVO4 laser with 2.5-mW quasi-cw output by using an optically contacted, prism-coupled KBe2BO3F2 crystal. We also achieved the second harmonic with a frequency-doubled single-mode Ti:sapphire laser at 172.5 nm and sum-frequency mixing with a dual-wavelength Ti:sapphire laser at 163.3 nm. These wavelengths are to our knowledge the shortest obtained by use of nonlinear crystals for second-harmonic generation and sum-frequency mixing, respectively.

Optical parametric properties of ultraviolet-pumped cesium lithium borate crystals.

We report the optical parametric properties of cesium lithium borate (CLBO) crystals pumped by UV radiation of the fourth-harmonic generation at 266 nm and the third-harmonic generation at 355 nm of a picosecond Nd:YAG laser. A special optical design was used to avoid damage to the optical elements by the UV-pumped beam at 266 nm. The optical parametric generator (OPG)/optical parametric amplifier (OPA) of the 266-nm-pumped CLBO covers the tuning range from 347 nm in the UV to 1137 nm in the near IR. The 355-nm-pumped CLBO OPG/OPA, on the other hand, is tunable from 447 to 1725 nm. The experimental tuning curves for each CLBO OPG/OPA were measured and compared with the theoretical tuning curves. With a double-pass OPG configuration and a pumping intensity of approximately 6 GW/cm2, the maximum conversion efficiency, including both the signal and the idler, was approximately 11% for the 266-nm-pumped CLBO and is greater than 16% for the 355-nm-pumped CLBO without taking into account the surface losses from the uncoated elements. The bandwidth of this double-pass CLBO OPG at various wavelengths was measured and compared with other optical parametric systems. Because of the small angular dispersion of CLBO, the bandwidth of the OPG and OPA systems is exceptionally narrow, especially for the 266-nm-pumped system. Without the use of any dispersion element, the bandwidth of the 266-nm-pumped system can be as narrow as 0.22 nm at wavelengths far from the degenerate point. Comparison between the experimental bandwidth and the theoretical calculation shows that the bandwidth of the UV-pumped CLBO OPG/OPA is limited mainly by the divergence of the pump beam.
