Focus on risk management.

Abstract

With the Canadian Council of Health Facilities Accreditation's introduction of new standards on risk management in 1991, many health care facilities in Canada are re-evaluating their risk-management programs. This article outlines how Toronto's Mount Sinai Hospital established new objectives and developed administrative structures to consolidate and improve its risk-management practices.

Towards a reference model for representing nursing information needs.

Information needs studies in clinical settings often face the problem of integrating and analyzing data collected using different study tools. Generally, a coding taxonomy or a model is developed to capture and code the study data. Significant efforts are required to develop a model that not only captures the study data but is also closer to the clinical domain to draw meaningful real world inferences. Further, a study-specific model limits comparative evaluation of studies across different institutions. In this paper, we propose a reference model for representing nursing information needs. We use an iterative and collaborative approach in representing the concepts in the model. The model consists of 33 information (need) concepts, 29 information sources and 7 categories of nursing tasks which were used to code 228 identified information need instances.

Integrating qualitative research into occupational health: a case study among hospital workers.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to better use qualitative approaches in occupational health research and integrate them with quantitative methods. METHODS: We systematically reviewed, selected, and adapted qualitative research methods as part of a multisite study of the predictors and outcomes of work-related musculoskeletal disorders among hospital workers in two large urban tertiary hospitals. RESULTS: The methods selected included participant observation; informal, open-ended, and semistructured interviews with individuals or small groups; and archival study. The nature of the work and social life of the hospitals and the foci of the study all favored using more participant observation methods in the case study than initially anticipated. CONCLUSIONS: Exploiting the full methodological spectrum of qualitative methods in occupational health is increasingly relevant. Although labor-intensive, these approaches may increase the yield of established quantitative approaches otherwise used in isolation.

The impact of leading empowered organisations (LEO) on leadership development in nursing.

PURPOSE: This study sought to evaluate the impact and sustainability of the Leading Empowered Organisations (LEO) programme on the role of G Grade Nurse Managers, their colleagues and therefore on patient care at CHS. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: A qualitative, inductive research methodology, which employed 360-degree research evaluation, was used. A purposive sample of four G Grade Nurse Managers was included. Each G Grade and eight of each of their colleagues were interviewed. Data were analysed according to the principles of thematic analysis. FINDINGS: There was evidence of a sustained impact of the LEO programme on G Grade Nurse Managers in relation to competence, action plans, delegation, communication strategies, problem solving, risk taking, leadership and management. The study also revealed a number of significant personal and contextual factors that affected the implementation of the LEO principles. Empowerment, or a lack of it, underpinned much of what occurred in the implementation of the LEO principles by the G Grades into practice. ORIGINALITY/VALUE: The findings indicated that both organisational and individual action is necessary to achieve leadership development. Organisations need to ensure that investment in leadership is not restricted to the LEO programme, but that it becomes a strategic priority.
