How will computerization revolutionize managed care?

Abstract

Computerization of behavioral health care information systems is revolutionizing how payors, managed care companies, and providers exchange information. In this article, an imaginary scenario is depicted of how patient data will be accessed and communicated to facilitate care management of behavioral health care services in the near future.

Computer-based ambulatory information systems: recent developments.

This article updates the author's earlier review of some of the major computer-based ambulatory information systems and the literature evaluating their costs, benefits, effect on quality of care, and physician acceptance. The evidence suggests that computer-based information systems can increase access to clinical information, improve physician performance, enhance quality of care, and facilitate outcomes research review. In addition to presenting health information networks and clinical decision support systems such as reminder systems, drug ordering systems, and medical care management systems, the article describes applications of telemedicine and Web-based systems. It also discusses barriers to the widespread use of computer-based ambulatory information systems.

Adoption of electronic medical records as a technology innovation for ambulatory care at the Medical University of South Carolina.

The study described in this article measured and compared the attitudes of groups of Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) ambulatory care staff and physicians toward adopting an electronic medical record (EMR) system, using the Perceived Characteristics of Innovating (PCI) scales developed by Moore and Benbasat (1991). The PCI scale scores were compared by professional group and by clinic location. The overall findings of this study were that potential users of the ambulatory care EMR at MUSC had generally positive or neutral attitudes toward the system. There were a number of significant differences noted among the professional groups, particularly between the physician groups and other groups. The physician groups had less positive feelings than the other groups did. There were few significant differences noted for comparisons by clinic location.
