Critical thinking: linking assessment data and knowledge.

Abstract

A vital element of the assessment process is critical thinking; that is, linking assessment data to knowledge. Making links or constructing knowledge is difficult for students because of the complex skill and cognitive load that the assessment process generates and because of students' limited view of the clinical environment. Viewing learning from the cognitive psychological perspective provides insight into knowledge construction and offers suggestions for faculty who teach nursing students.

Significance of paradoxical leftward error of line bisection in left unilateral spatial neglect.

We intended to determine if leftward error of line bisection means "right" or "left" neglect in a patient with left unilateral spatial neglect. The patient placed the subjective midpoint to the left of the true center when bisecting lines without cueing. By contrast, when cued to the left endpoint, he showed typical rightward errors that became greater as longer lines were presented. Cueing to the right endpoint increased leftward errors compared with the bisections without cueing. The results suggest that paradoxical leftward error of line bisection is a form of "left" unilateral spatial neglect in that the shortness of the left extent is ignored.

Gender and the integration of acoustic dimensions of prosody: implications for clinical studies.

This study was conducted to detect the existence of a relationship between spectral and temporal prosodic cues and to examine gender differences in any such relationship. The rationale for the investigation was to gain a greater understanding of normal prosody and the requirements for control groups in clinical studies of prosody. Ten male and 10 female speakers with no known speech or neurological deficits participated in the study. They performed a reading task which involved delivering 10 sentences first with a declarative and then repeated with an interrogative intonation (20 sentences per speaker). Intrasubject and intersubject analyses of the speech data revealed a dependence of pitch on duration that differed between male and female speakers. Significant differences between the genders were also found in speech rate, pitch range, and pitch slope. The findings suggest that an integrated treatment of acoustic cues may provide a more invariant feature of normal prosody against which clinical groups may be compared. The data also imply that in clinical studies of the production of prosody gender should be carefully controlled.

Experience-dependent visual cue integration based on consistencies between visual and haptic percepts.

We study the hypothesis that observers can use haptic percepts as a standard against which the relative reliabilities of visual cues can be judged, and that these reliabilities determine how observers combine depth information provided by these cues. Using a novel visuo-haptic virtual reality environment, subjects viewed and grasped virtual objects. In Experiment 1, subjects were trained under motion relevant conditions, during which haptic and visual motion cues were consistent whereas haptic and visual texture cues were uncorrelated, and texture relevant conditions, during which haptic and texture cues were consistent whereas haptic and motion cues were uncorrelated. Subjects relied more on the motion cue after motion relevant training than after texture relevant training, and more on the texture cue after texture relevant training than after motion relevant training. Experiment 2 studied whether or not subjects could adapt their visual cue combination strategies in a context-dependent manner based on context-dependent consistencies between haptic and visual cues. Subjects successfully learned two cue combination strategies in parallel, and correctly applied each strategy in its appropriate context. Experiment 3, which was similar to Experiment 1 except that it used a more naturalistic experimental task, yielded the same pattern of results as Experiment 1 indicating that the findings do not depend on the precise nature of the experimental task. Overall, the results suggest that observers can involuntarily compare visual and haptic percepts in order to evaluate the relative reliabilities of visual cues, and that these reliabilities determine how cues are combined during three-dimensional visual perception.
