Predicting the wettability of quartz surfaces exposed to dense nonaqueous phase liquids.

A model incorporating electrostatic and van der Waals forces was used to predict the wetting behavior of several systems containing a quartz surface, water, and a dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL). The disjoining pressure between the quartz/water and a water/DNAPL interface as a function of their separation was calculated from a full solution of the nonlinear Poisson-Boltzmann equation allowing for charge regulation. For the pH regime associated with a positive pressure barrier, the quartz surface was predicted to be water wetting. The model takes into account the charging behavior of an isolated DNAPL/water interface as inferred from electrophoretic mobility data. It provides excellent predictions for four coal tar and creosote samples tested, where the quartz was oil-wetting below pH 5 and water-wetting at higher pH values. In a fifth sample, the transition occurred above pH 7, which indicates that mechanisms other than electrostatic interaction control the wetting behavior in this sample.

Effect of substrate concentration on bioleaching of metal-contaminated sediment.

The remediation of metal-contaminated sediment was studied using the bioleaching process with a mixed culture of sulfur-oxidizing bacteria. The effects of substrate concentration (elemental sulfur) on sediment acidification, sulfur oxidation and metal solubilization from contaminated sediment during the bioleaching process were investigated with free-cell suspensions. Sulfur concentration greater than 0.5% (w/v) was found to be inhibitory to bacterial activity and metal solubilization from sediment. The sulfate production was well described by a substrate inhibition expression and Haldane's equation. In addition, an empirical equation related to sulfur concentration was also used to describe the metal solubilization in the bioleaching process.

Sonochemical degradation of chlorinated hydrocarbons using a batch and continuous flow system.

The sonochemical degradation of chlorinated hydrocarbons such as 1,1,1-trichloroethane, trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene in aqueous solution was carried out in the batch and continuous flow systems at an ultrasonic frequency of 100kHz under an air atmosphere. In the batch experiment, the rate of degradation follows the order 1,1,1-trichloroethane>tetrachloroethylene>trichloroethylene, and the chlorinated hydrocarbon were readily degraded by ultrasonic irradiation. The experiments in the continuous flow system were performed in the range of volumetric flow rate from 7 to 30 x 10(-3)lmin(-1). The conversion of the chlorinated hydrocarbons at a steady-state of reactor depended on the volumetric flow rate. The yield of Cl(-) (as a measurement of mineralization of chlorinated hydrocarbons) was 70-90% of the chlorine atoms in the parent chlorinated hydrocarbon molecules. From the viewpoint of the scale-up process, the sonochemical degradation of trichloroethylene was simulated in a three stage reactor, and the conversion (>99%) in a third stage reactor was showed the good results that can be satisfied a desired water quality standard.
