A do-it-yourself guide to group problem solving.

Abstract

The use of QC (quality control) circles and other group problem-solving techniques has been hindered by a general lack of group-process skills among managers and prospective group leaders, according to author Ernesto Poza, president of E. J. Poza Associates, Inc. Thus many organization feel they must hire consultants to help implement group processes--an expensive prospect indeed. As he explains here, however, the author has developed a five-step do-it-yourself approach that will enable employee groups to solve organizational problems on their own. With the aid of his step-by-step explanation, human resources managers should gain enough "expertise" to use this approach themselves and to train others to use it. The steps include problem identification, brain-storming, cause-and-effect analysis, force-field analysis, and action planning and implementation.

Assessing threats of targeted group violence: contributions from social psychology.

Recent increases in domestic and international acts of extremist violence perpetrated against American citizens have prompted an increased need for information to help understand and evaluate the threat posed to U.S. targets by extremist groups and their individual members. The purpose of this paper is to (i) suggest the potential relevance of social psychological research on group behavior for understanding and assessing threats of extremist group violence; and, (ii) encourage more systematic research on group violence to further inform assessments of group risk. Approaching the issue from the levels of group behavior, and of individual behavior within a group context, the article summarizes research on key principles of group behavior, and the effects of group membership on individual behavior; proposes specific questions derived from these principles for consideration in evaluating risk for violence by groups, and by individuals influenced by groups; and suggests further research needs.

How to make nutrition education more meaningful through facilitated group discussions.

Facilitated group discussions provide an alternative method to lecture and one-on-one approaches for conducting educational interventions at clinic sites. They are an interactive form of education wherein learners generate the specific topics to be addressed and share their knowledge and experience with other group members through discussion. In brief, the educator becomes a facilitator who, rather than lecturing, encourages clients to discuss freely among themselves their own approach to the nutrition problems posed during the session. As a facilitator, the nutritionist strives to create a comfortable atmosphere for discussion, encourages participation, and interjects only to correct misinformation and manage group dynamics. Facilitated group discussions allow nutrition practitioners to deliver meaningful nutrition education in a manner that helps empower their clients to improve their dietary habits; at the same time such discussions meet the increased public administrative demands for efficiency. Possible benefits to clients include more confidence, better communication skills, improved thinking skills, and increased motivation and commitment to improving nutrition behavior. We recommend that nutrition educators try facilitated group discussions in their clinics.
