Analyzing and correcting spectrometer temperature sensitivity.

Stability and reproducibility of the spectrometer are fundamental to the success of many modern NMR experiments. Variation in room temperature is a particularly important source of instability, in part because it can cause coherent artifacts in NMR spectra. Small changes in room temperature lead to corresponding changes in the phases, amplitudes, and frequencies of NMR signals. These can lead in turn to apparently random spectral artifacts such as t(1)-noise in two-dimensional (2D) NMR and to the incomplete cancellation of signals in difference spectra, but also, importantly, to F(1) satellite signals in 2D spectra. These "parallel diagonals" arise from the use of air conditioning, which typically forces room temperature to oscillate within a fixed band. Work to identify, quantify, and suppress sources of temperature sensitivity in a modern 300-MHz spectrometer has led to a greater than 10-fold improvement in the signal-to-artifact ratio.

Investigation of the potential for radon mitigation by operation of mechanical systems affecting indoor air.

Mitigation of radon gas and radon progeny in buildings is based largely on reducing the pressure difference between the point of the radiation source and the point of entry to indoor air. This study identifies the influence of mechanical systems, of air-conditioning and 'wet' systems of central heating as potential remediation agents in the control of radon and progeny concentrations. Air-conditioning was found to reduce radon levels in a systematic way within a few hours of start-up, to a low fraction of the immediately preceding concentration. Central heating reduced the level by around 40% of the preceding high within a few hours of start-up. Importantly for health concerns, under operating conditions of both types of system the level of radon progeny was reduced to a greater extent than the radon progenitor.

Ground performance of air conditioning and water recycle system for a Space Plant Box.

Researchers from 5 Japanese universities have developed a plant growth facility (Space Plant Box) for seed to seed experiments under microgravity. The breadboard model of the Space Plant Box was fabricated by assembling subsystems developed for microgravity. The subsystems include air conditioning and water recycle system, air circulation system, water and nutrient delivery system, lighting system and plant monitoring system. The air conditioning and water recycle system is simply composed of a single heat exchanger, two fans and hydrophilic fibrous strings. The strings allow water movement from the cooler fin in the Cooling Box to root supporting materials in the Plant Growth Chamber driven by water potential deficit. Relative humidity in the Plant Growth Chamber can be changed over a wide range by controlling the ratio of latent heat exchange to sensible heat exchange on the cooling fin of the heat exchanger. The transpiration rate was successfully measured by circulating air inside the Plant Growth Chamber only. Most water was recycled and a small amount of water needed to be added from the outside. The simple, air conditioning and water recycle system for the Space Plant Box showed good performance through a barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) growth experiment.
