Inventory management in a changing environment.
Abstract
The typical hospital materials manager controls a medical/surgical supply inventory of about $496 per bed. The operating room at that same hospital has an official inventory of $530 per bed and an unofficial inventory which can only be guessed at. These are just a few of the findings from HMM's recent survey of hospital inventory management, the first installment of which appears in this issue. HMM welcomes comments on the series and is also interested in learning more about the ways its readers are improving their hospitals' inventory management practices.
