Myco-Ed: Mycological curriculum for education and discovery.

Fungi are important and hyperdiverse organisms, yet chronically understudied. Most fungal clades have no reference genomes, impeding our understanding of their ecosystem functions and use as solutions in health and biotechnology. Also, opportunities for training in fungal biology and genomics are lacking, creating a bottleneck that hinders the recruitment and cultivation of a talented future mycological workforce. To address these issues, we developed Myco-Ed, an educational program offering training and scientific contributions through genome sequencing and analysis. Myco-Ed empowers students to pursue careers in fungal biology while improving fungal resources. Myco-Ed has been piloted at 12 institutions (15 classrooms) ranging from online e-Campuses to R1 universities, resulting in hundreds of fungal observations and many new high-quality reference genomes.

Nurse education in Mbarara, Uganda.

AIM: To describe the establishment of a professional development programme for qualified nurses at Mbarara University Teaching Hospital, Uganda. BACKGROUND: Between 1997 and 1999, a group of hospital-based nurses and university lecturers in Hull, United Kingdom, planned and delivered a series of modules to set the Ugandan nurses on course for continuing professional development. APPROACH: A descriptive account of the delivery of the programme. FINDINGS: Evaluation of the programme indicates that the nurses' morale was raised by satisfactory completion of the modules and that there were visible improvements in the organization of patient care in the hospital. CONCLUSIONS: This professional development programme was a learning experience for all the parties involved. Support from Hull for the education of nurses in Mbarara will continue.

The value of marginality in a medical school: general practice and curriculum change.

OBJECTIVE: To report the process of introduction, development and sustenance of a curriculum for a department of general practice in the context of changing curricula required by the General Medical Council. SETTING AND CONTEXT: Tayside Centre for General Practice, the Department of General Practice within Dundee University Medical School. METHODS: Use of action research methodology common in educational and sociological research. Action research utilizes a range of data collection techniques which allow the participants in the research full opportunities to reflect on the data as it emerges and make developments accordingly. ANALYSIS: This took place as part of the process of the 5-year project. The analysis used as its starting point the sociological theory of the social construction of power within institutions. It offers the thesis that marginality seems to be a prerequisite in confronting institutional conservatism. CONCLUSIONS: Use of an action research model facilitated more effective change by providing a supportive atmosphere in which to tackle changes. The marginal status of the general practice group in relation to the medical school allowed creative negotiation of alliances within the medical school. Other groups within the medical school who are introducing new curricula can learn from this report.
