Mixed vesicle formation on a ternary surfactant system: didodecyldimethylammonium bromide/dodecylethyldimethylammonium bromide/water.

The formation of mixed aggregates has been investigated on a ternary system consisting of two cationic surfactants with similar polar heads and two and/or one 12 carbon atom hydrophobic tail, respectively, didodecyldimethylammonium bromide and dodecylethyldimethylammonium bromide and water. The study has been carried out by means of conductivity, zeta potential, and cryogenic transmission electronic microscopy (cryo-TEM) experiments on the very diluted region. A variety of mixed aggregates, microaggregates, vesicles, and micelles has been found, depending on system composition and total surfactant concentration. Mixed critical microaggregate concentration and mixed critical vesicle concentration have been determined from conductivity data. Furthermore, zeta potential and cryo-TEM experiments allow for the characterization of the aggregates/solution interface and of the shape and size of the aggregates. This experimental evidence has also been analyzed in terms of the theoretical packing parameter, P.

Developmental plasticity of NMDA receptor function in the retina and the influence of light.

Despite the early expression of NMDA receptors (NMDARs) in the retina, not much is known about their regulation and involvement in plasticity processes during retinal development and synapse formation. Here we report that NMDAR function in the inner retina is developmentally regulated and controlled by ambient light condition. A prominent down-regulation after eye opening of NMDAR function was observed in rat retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), which was prevented by dark rearing the animals for 1 month but was again induced by subsequent light exposure. As shown by molecular analysis of single RGCs, alterations in the subunit composition of NMDAR did not account for the light-dependent regulation of NMDAR function. Immunocytochemistry showed no differences in the NMDAR protein expression pattern between normal and dark-reared animals. In conclusion, our data clearly demonstrate that NMDAR function is modulated during periods of retinal plasticity independent of structural alterations in its subunit composition and thus different from mechanisms observed in higher visual centers.

Conductance titration of single-peptide molecules.

We have measured the conductance of single peptides covalently bonded to two Au electrodes via S-Au bonds by repeatedly forming a large number of molecular junctions. The conductance decreases exponentially with the peptide length, with a decay constant of beta = 0.9 +/- 0.1 A-1, suggesting that tunneling is the mechanism of electron transport in the peptides. The conductance of the peptides is sensitive to the solution pH, due to the protonation/deprotonation of the amine and carboxyl groups of the peptides, which provides titration measurements based on single-molecule conductance.
