Aesthetic oculoplastic surgery.

Abstract

Important concepts and advances continue to evolve in the field of aesthetic oculoplastic surgery. A keen interest in aesthetics exists, both on the part of the youth-oriented, aging baby-boomer population and on the part of many physicians and surgeons in a variety of different specialities. This review article highlights recent, important developments regarding cosmetic Botox injections for lines of facial expression, laser facial-resurfacing techniques, endoscopic and updated browlift techniques, lower-lid blepharoplasty with suborbicularis oculi fat lift, and subcutaneous Gore-Tex implants for treatment of deep facial rhytids. Because of the space limitations of this review, it is not possible to include a thorough step-by-step description of all surgical techniques. Rather, important concepts, references, and updates are emphasized. The information presented should be of interest to readers of varying levels of expertise.

Technical tricks to improve the cosmetic results of breast-conserving treatment.

The paper describes different manoeuvres and surgical details that may help the general surgeon to improve the aesthetic outcomes after breast-conserving treatment for cancer. Among them, the pre-operative planning, the position of the patient in the operative room, the mobilisation of the glandular tissue when the tumour has been removed. All these manoeuvres contribute to achieving better symmetry with the healthy breast and to improve the final aesthetic result, minimising the surgical conflict between large resections and defects for optimal control of local disease and the consequent breast deformities.

Reconstruction of the nipple-areola complex: an update.

Along with continuing progress in reconstructive surgery of the breast numerous techniques of nipple-areola reconstruction have been developed. With time and experience some methods have been discredited to historical significance only while others have evolved to widely accepted concepts used by surgeons all over the world, which in turn contributed new ideas and modifications. In addition to those favourite techniques others are reserved as second-line alternatives in specific situations. The principle criterion for a pleasing nipple-areola complex is symmetry regarding several parameters: colour, texture, size, and projection. The purpose of this manuscript is to review and discuss the concepts and techniques of nipple-areola reconstruction that have evolved over the past decades. Furthermore, those principles and techniques are pointed out that fulfil best the criteria of an ideal nipple-areola complex with emphasis on different techniques of breast reconstruction and individual conditions of the patient.
