Developing and scoring essay tests.

Abstract

The need to prepare nursing students for the licensing examination has resulted in a predominance of multiple-choice testing in nursing courses. But what about evaluating students' ability to present ideas in their own words and develop creative responses to questions posed by the teacher? Essay items provide an effective means of assessing higher levels of learning and ability to organize and present ideas in writing. The author describes how to develop essay items and score responses.

One big idea, one ultimate concern. Sigmund Koch's critique of psychology and hope for the future.

Sigmund Koch, best known for his critical analyses of psychological theory and practice, drew his pivotal insight and abiding concern from his conviction that the failure to sustain and advance human-centered inquiry and understanding (as opposed to rule-governed methodology and conclusions) is the root pathology of modern life. Inspired by the work of selected colleagues, creative artists, and disciplined connoisseurs of language (and, hence, of human sensibility), Koch held out hope for a return to human agency, both inside and outside the domains of psychological study and application.

Neuronal hypersynchronization, creativity and endogenous psychoses.

I have investigated a neuronal hypersynchronism, currently included under the general subject of epilepsy, and termed interictal activity. I suggest that it is a physiological activity of the mammalian brain and propose it be termed Hyperia. After a thorough study of the extraordinary psychic manifestations of this neuronal hypersynchronism shown by mystics and artists, I have reviewed several scientific publications bearing on my hypothesis. I conclude by elaborating on a variety of cerebral hypersynchronous functions whose cause I consider to be physiological. Such behaviour is a common basis for extraordinary psychic manifestations found not only in mystics and artists, but also in patients suffering from endogenous psychoses, especially Bipolar Disorder.
