Abstract

Recent magnetoencephalographic (MEG) recordings support the existence of a system for matching observed and executed actions in humans and suggest that this system involves even the primary motor cortex.

Functional imaging of the brain in sedated newborn infants using near infrared topography during passive knee movement.

Near infrared topography was used for functional imaging of the sensorimotor cortex of newborn infants during passive knee movement under sedated sleep. Contralateral knee movement caused a marked increase in oxyhemoglobin and total hemoglobin from the baseline values at almost all locations in the primary sensorimotor area of all neonates and a decrease in local deoxyhemoglobin in six of seven neonates. During ipsilateral knee movement, oxyhemoglobin and total hemoglobin showed slighter changes at a few locations, equal to 30% (mean) and 29% (mean) of the changes that occurred with contralateral stimulation, respectively. The mean times corresponding to maximal changes were 11.9 s for oxyhemoglobin and 19.1 s for deoxyhemoglobin, demonstrating that oxyhemoglobin has a much faster response than does deoxyhemoglobin.

Imaging the pain of low back pain: functional magnetic resonance imaging in combination with monitoring subjective pain perception allows the study of clinical pain states.

Most brain imaging studies of pain are done using a two-state subtraction design (state-related design). More recently event-related functional magnetic reasonance imaging (fMRI) has also been used for studying pain. Both designs severely limit the application of the technology to clinical pain states. Recently we demonstrated that monitoring time fluctuations of perceived pain could be used with fMRI to identify brain regions involved in conscious, subjective perception of pain. Here we extend the methodology to demonstrate that the same approach can be used to study clinical pain states. Subjects are equipped with a finger-spanning device to continuously rate and log their perceived pain during fMRI data collection. These ratings are convolved with a canonical hemodynamic response function to generate predictor waveforms with which related brain activity can be identified. Chronic low back pain patients and a normal volunteer were used. In one series of fMRI scans the patient simply lies in the scanner and indicates spontaneous fluctuations of the subjective pain. In other fMRI scans, a straight-leg raising procedure is performed to exacerbate the back pain. In the normal volunteer, fMRI scans were done during painful and non-painful straight-leg raisings. The results indicate the feasibility of differentiating between different pain states. We argue that the approach can be generalized to identify brain circuitry underlying diverse clinical pain conditions.

Functional anatomy of execution, mental simulation, observation, and verb generation of actions: a meta-analysis.

There is a large body of psychological and neuroimaging experiments that have interpreted their findings in favor of a functional equivalence between action generation, action simulation, action verbalization, and perception of action. On the basis of these data, the concept of shared motor representations has been proposed. Indeed several authors have argued that our capacity to understand other people's behavior and to attribute intention or beliefs to others is rooted in a neural, most likely distributed, execution/observation mechanism. Recent neuroimaging studies have explored the neural network engaged during motor execution, simulation, verbalization, and observation. The focus of this metaanalysis is to evaluate in specific detail to what extent the activated foci elicited by these studies overlap.
