Implantable microsystems. Polyimide-based neuroprostheses for interfacing nerves.

Abstract

Neuroprostheses are technical devices for functionally interfacing parts of the nervous system. Using micromachining technology and flexible materials for substrate and insulation, miniaturized implants have been fabricated that offer new opportunities to assist those suffering from neurological disorders. This article reviews the technology and discusses potential applications.

Organization of the central control of muscles of facial expression in man.

Surface EMGs were recorded simultaneously from ipsilateral pairs of facial muscles while subjects made three different common facial expressions: the smile, a sad expression and an expression of horror, and three contrived facial expressions. Central peaks were found in the cross-correlograms of EMG activity recorded from the orbicularis oculi and zygomaticus major during smiling, the corrugator and depressor anguli oris during the sad look and the frontalis and mentalis during the horror look. The size of the central peak was significantly greater between the orbicularis oculi and zygomaticus major during smiling. It is concluded that co-contraction of facial muscles during some facial expressions are accompanied by the presence of common synaptic drive to the motoneurones supplying the muscles involved. Central peaks were found in the cross-correlograms of EMG activity recorded from the frontalis and depressor anguli oris during a contrived expression. However, no central peaks were found in the cross-correlograms of EMG activity recorded from the frontalis and orbicularis oculi or from the frontalis and zygomaticus major during the other two contrived expressions. It is concluded that a common synaptic drive is not present between all possible facial muscle pairs and suggests a functional role for the synergy. The origin of the common drive is discussed. It is concluded that activity in branches of common stem last-order presynaptic input fibres to motoneurones innervating the different facial muscles and presynaptic synchronization of input activity to the different motoneurone pools is involved. The former probably contributes more to the drive to the orbicularis oculi and zygomaticus major during smiling, while the latter is probably more prevalent in the corrugator and depressor anguli oris during the sad look, the frontalis and mentalis during the horror look and the frontalis and depressor anguli oris during one of the contrived expressions. The strength of common synaptic drive is inversely related to the degree of separate control that can be exhibited by the facial muscles involved.

Diagnostic and interventional microhysteroscopy with use of the coaxial bipolar electrode system.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy and safety as a diagnostic and interventional outpatient procedure of microhysteroscopy using the coaxial bipolar electrode system (Versascope, Versapoint Electrosurgical System; Gynecare Inc., Menlo Park, CA) with normal saline solution as an irrigation medium. DESIGN: Analysis of 151 cases of diagnostic and interventional procedures. SETTING: Urban tertiary care center and teaching hospital. PATIENT(S): One hundred fifty-one women of reproductive age. INTERVENTION(S): Apart from diagnostic procedures, operative procedures were carried out microhysteroscopically with the coaxial bipolar electrode system. RESULT(S): Of the 151 patients who underwent the procedures, 94 received diagnostic microhysteroscopies, and 11 underwent the procedure for synechiotomy, 18 for polypectomy, 3 for submucus myoma resections, 7 for tubal cannulations, 5 for incomplete septal resection, 5 for endometrial ablation, and 8 for complete septal resection out of which 1 was completed with a 27F resectoscope using a knife monopolar electrode. All the patients were discharged the same day as admission. CONCLUSION(S): Use of a microhysteroscope with the coaxial bipolar electrode system is an effective alternative for carrying out diagnostic as well as operative microhysteroscopies. Although the field of vision is limited, with experience nearly all the procedures of hysteroscopy can be carried out as outpatient procedures using normal saline as the irrigation medium, thus avoiding the complications of glycine.

Novel poly (vinyl chloride) matrix membrane electrodes for the determination of phenolic pollutants in waste water.

The construction and electrochemical response characteristics of poly (vinyl chloride) matrix membrane sensors for seven phenolic compounds (phenol, o-cresol, p-cresol, p-chlorophenol, o-nitrophenol, alpha-naphthol and beta-naphthol) are described. The membranes incorporate ion association complexes of these seven phenolic anions with phenanthroline-iron(II) as electroactive materials. These sensors show linear response for phenol, o-cresol, p-cresol, p-chlorophenol, o-nitrophenol, alpha-naphthol, and beta-naphthol over wide concentration ranges, with an average anionic slope 54.3 mV per concentration decade. The suggested sensors exhibit fast response time (1 min), low determination limits (1 x 10(-5)M), good stability (2-3 weeks), reasonable selectivity to phenolic compounds in the presence of other water pollutants. The average percentage recovery was 99.78+/-0.088 for individual phenolates and 99.61+/-0.198 for phenolates in mixtures. The investigated sensors were successfully used for direct potentiometric determination of traces of these phenolic compounds in wastewater samples. Results with mean accuracy of 99.74+/-0.29%, 99.82+/-0.36%, 99.65+/-0.47%, 99.73+/-0.37%, 99.77+/-0.30%, 99.86+/-0.31% and 99.91+/-0.22% was obtained for the seven sensors, respectively. These results were compared with data obtained using the British pharamacopial method (The British Pharmacopoeia, Her Majesty's Stationary Office, London, 1993) and others (Clarke's Isolation and Identification of Drugs in Pharmaceuticals Body Fluids and Post-mortem Materials, 2nd Edition, The Pharmaceutical Press, London, 1998).
