Self-affinity in phase space.

Abstract

The expression for the Wigner distribution (WD) in polar coordinates was derived, based on the decomposition of coherent and partially coherent fields on the orthogonal sets of Hermite-Gauss modes. This representation allows one to analyze easily the structure of the WD and to describe the field propagation through first-order optical systems, including the self-imaging phenomenon.

Compact beam expander with linear gratings.

Novel compact beam expanders that could be useful for applications such as providing light to flat panel displays are presented. They are based on a planar configuration in which three spatially linear gratings are recorded on one transparent substrate, so as to expand a narrow incoming beam in two dimensions. We present the design and recording procedures along with results, showing a relatively uniform intensity of the wide output beam. Such expanders can serve for illuminating flat panel displays.

Stochastic and mesoscopic models for tropical convection.

A new way to parametrize certain aspects of tropical convection through stochastic and mesoscopic models is developed here. The technical idea is to adapt tools from statistical physics and materials science to model important unresolved features of tropical convection. This new strategy consists of modeling the unresolved effects of convective inhibition in a coarse mesh mesoscopic parametrization through a "heat bath" model involving a stochastic spin flip model with very natural interaction rules for convective inhibition combined with a suitable external potential defined by the coarse mesh values. In turn, the values of the order parameter from this heat bath alter the vertical mass flux in regions of deep convection. Both stochastic and systematic deterministic mesoscopic parametrizations are developed here. The deterministic mesoscopic models derived in this fashion exhibit new phenomena such as multiple radiative equilibria in suitable parameter regimes. The simplest first numerical experiments reported here with the mesoscopic deterministic parametrization qualitatively reproduce several key features of the observational record regarding convectively coupled tropical waves. The systematic stochastic modeling strategy proposed here could also be very useful for capturing other features of tropical convection such as those involving cloud radiation feedbacks.

Simulated formation and flow of microemulsions during surfactant flushing of contaminated soil.

Contamination of groundwater resources by non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPLs) has become an issue of increasing environmental concern. This study investigated the formation and flow of microemulsions during surfactant flushing of NAPL-contaminated soil using the finite difference model UTCHEM, which was verified with our laboratory experimental data. Simulation results showed that surfactant flushing of NAPLs (i.e., trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene) from the contaminated soils was an emulsion-driven process. Formation of NAPL-in-water microemulsions facilitated the removal of NAPLs from contaminated soils. Changes in soil saturation pressure were used to monitor the mobilization and entrapment of NAPLs during surface flushing process. In general, more NAPLs were clogged in soil pores when the soil saturation pressure increased. Effects of aquifer salinity on the formation and flow of NAPL-in-water microemulsions were significant. This study suggests that the formation and flow of NAPL-in-water microemulsions through aquifer systems are complex physical-chemical phenomena that are critical to effective surfactant flushing of contaminated soils.
