Abstract

Several methods for positioning dowel pins used in the fabrication of removable dies have been presented. Needles, pins, paper clips, hairpins, and matches are all useful in positioning dowel pins in the impression. The use of paper matches is a simple and effective method for holding the dowel pin in the proper relation while the die stone portion of the cast is being poured.

[Optimal reconstruction of destructed teeth by pin constructions].

327 patients with dentures supported by 318 pulpless teeth reinforced by pin constructions were under observation. Main types of complications after pin use were identified. By math simulation the system "covering construction-artificial stump-root pin-root of the tooth" was studied for teeth 11, 13, 15, 16, 41, 43, 45, 46 in two projections--vestibulo-oral and mesio-distal. Margins of strength properties of teeth armed by special pin constructions (made as individual casting) and artificial stump with standard pins made of different materials were determined. Optimal parameters of height and width of off-root part and intra-root pin sizes in different teeth groups in conformity with their individual anatomic peculiarities were established.

The effect of the mismatch between the core diameter of self-threading dentine pins and the pinhole diameter.

This laboratory study incorporated the use of three different sized twist drills to prepare pinholes in extracted upper molar teeth. The diameter of each pinhole was measured. A pre-measured self-threading pin was then placed in each pinhole. The amount of strain created during pin placement (placement strain), the temperature rise during pin placement, the amount of strain remaining (residual strain) within the tooth structure after pin placement and the removal force (retention) were recorded for each pin. The results showed that, during the placement of a self-threading dentine pin, the difference between the pincore diameter and the pinhole diameter was an important parameter. This difference determined the amount of strain created during pin placement, the temperature rise during pin placement, the amount of strain remaining within the tooth structure after pin placement and the retention of the pin. The placement strain, temperature rise, residual strain and retention were all greater when the pin core diameter exceeded the pin hole diameter.
