Modeling neuronal dynamic coding in primary visual cortex.

Abstract

The visual system can be considered as a multi-layered and dynamic image processing system. According to experimental evidence, the receptive field (RF) organization is characterized by spatio-temporal properties. The modified extended Gabor (MEG) function model was proposed to describe the main spatio-temporal properties of RF at different levels of visual pathway. Based on the MEG model, a three-layered dynamic coding model was constructed for a complex cell. The responses of the complex cell depend on synaptic events from a simple cell assembly within a time window. The membrane potential evolution equation was applied to the analysis of the length of a time window. The simulation results demonstrated that a complex cell plays as a coincidence detector in encoding synaptic events within the time window.

Drug output of unvented jet nebulizers as a function of time.

Nebulizer drug output rate increases during the nebulization. For unvented jet nebulizers, a physical and mathematical model based on the efficiency of the nebulization process is presented for this phenomenon. Formulas are derived for the cumulative drug output and the drug output rate of the nebulization process. The model is compared with the model proposed by Coates et al. [J. Aerosol. Med. 11 (1998) 101]. Both models are supported by experimental literature data. Both models predict the experimental values well but the proposed model allows more easy prediction of the influence of small changes in the nebulization conditions and the calculation of the cumulative drug output for a related process. From literature data it is shown that the efficiency of an unvented jet nebulization process of diluted aqueous solutions is relatively insensitive to small changes in the concentration as well as to small changes in aspiration flow but is sensitive to the humidity of the compressor gas only.

Quantitative structure-retention relationships of phenolic compounds without Hammett's equations.

Retention times of phenolic compounds in a given pH eluent in reversed-phase liquid chromatography were predicted from dissociation constants derived from atomic partial charges and log P-values calculated by a computational chemical method. The precision of the calculation of atomic partial charges by AMI and PM3 methods of MOPAC was evaluated. The atomic partial charges obtained by AMI were the more acceptable. The atomic partial charges obtained from the hydrogen of the hydroxyl group included an ortho-effect, therefore an ortho-effect was added to the predicted values. The precision of predicted retention factors obtained using predicted pKa values was similar to that using reference pKa values.

Evidence for sequential barriers and obligatory intermediates in apparent two-state protein folding.

Many small proteins fold fast and without detectable intermediates. This is frequently taken as evidence against the importance of partially folded states, which often transiently accumulate during folding of larger proteins. To get insight into the properties of free energy barriers in protein folding we analyzed experimental data from 23 proteins that were reported to show non-linear activation free-energy relationships. These non-linearities are generally interpreted in terms of broad transition barrier regions with a large number of energetically similar states. Our results argue against the presence of a single broad barrier region. They rather indicate that the non-linearities are caused by sequential folding pathways with consecutive distinct barriers and a few obligatory high-energy intermediates. In contrast to a broad barrier model the sequential model gives a consistent picture of the folding barriers for different variants of the same protein and when folding of a single protein is analyzed under different solvent conditions. The sequential model is also able to explain changes from linear to non-linear free energy relationships and from apparent two-state folding to folding through populated intermediates upon single point mutations or changes in the experimental conditions. These results suggest that the apparent discrepancy between two-state and multi-state folding originates in the relative stability of the intermediates, which argues for the importance of partially folded states in protein folding.
