Abstract

The QUASH UE-Project was designed to assess the reliability of normalisation approaches to compensate the influence of natural process affecting the distribution and concentration of contaminants in sediment. The focus of this paper was to test the influence on normalisation procedures of an inorganic matrix using a sample collected in the Venice Lagoon, Italy.

Comprehensive source-risk assessment of organophosphate esters in surface water of the Dianchi Lake Basin, Yunnan, China.

Organophosphate esters (OPEs), widely used as flame retardants and plasticizers, have been increasingly detected in aquatic environments. However, investigations of their distribution in high-altitude plateau lakes remain scarce. Identifying and quantifying the sources and associated risks of OPEs are crucial for subsequent water environment management. In this study, an integrated source-risk analysis approach was employed by combining the Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) model, the Geodetector (GD) model, and risk quotient (RQ). Analysis of 14 OPEs in surface waters of the Dianchi Lake Basin (DLB) revealed 12 detectable compounds, with total OPEs concentrations (ΣOPEs) ranging from not detected (ND)-64.6 ng/L during the wet season and ND-35.8 ng/L during the dry season. Elevated ΣOPEs were primarily observed at inflow sites in the northern part of the lake and in urban rivers. Source apportionment indicated four major contributing sources: agricultural films containing flame-retardant and plasticizer additives, traffic-related particulate emissions, releases from household and personal care products, and industrial production and applications of flame retardants in plastics, electronics, and related products (the predominant source). The ecological impact caused by OPEs ranges from no risk to low risk, with tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate emitted from industrial source being the primary driver of potential environmental risk. These findings highlight the necessity of prioritizing industrial sources in future management strategies. Overall, this study provides a methodological framework for source apportionment and risk assessment of OPEs and offers scientific evidence to support environmental management of OPEs in the DLB.

Sensitive biomonitoring of monoterpene exposure by gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric measurement of hydroxy terpenes in urine.

A gas chromatographic method with mass selective detection was developed which enables the simultaneous determination of the urinary hydroxy terpenes cis-verbenol, alpha-terpineol, myrtenol, carveol, perillyl alcohol and trans-sobrerol. The sample preparation consisted of enzymatic hydrolysis, solid phase extraction (SPE) with RP-C(18) SPE material and clean up with silica gel cartridges. Large volume injection was used and the mass selective detection was done in the single ion modus. Low detection limits in the range of 1.0-4.5 microg/l for the terpene metabolites in urine and mean recoveries of 100% were achieved.

Organic matter preservation in the sediment of an acidic mining lake.

Sustainable management of acidic mining lakes requires knowledge on the origin and reactivity of its sedimentary organic matter. We identified different pools of organic matter (OM) in the Fe-rich sediment (up to 35 wt %) of an acidic (pH 2.8) mining lake using delta13C-signals, C/N ratios, and the markers alkanes, lignin-derived phenols, and benzenepolycarboxylic acids (BPCA). Additionally, a density fractionation was applied to each sediment layer. Three fractions, aquatic (AOM), terrestrial (TOM), and lignite-derived (LOM) organic matter, were discriminated, of which AOM comprises only a small fraction, with a minimum at the sediment bottom. The terrestrial contribution to sedimentary OM is higher than that of AOM but still low throughout the sediment core, whereas lignite-derived OM constitutes the major C-fraction, even in the upper sediment layers. The size of the carbon pools was quantified with a mass-balance approach, in which the BPCA content was utilized as an estimate for the lignite fraction in combination with the delta13C-signals of the three C fractions. The largest amount of OM was found in the heaviest (>2.4 g cm3) of the three density fractions of the two upper sediment layers, which implies strong interaction with iron hydroxides. Comparisons with C-oxidation rates revealed that besides the refractory origin of the OM, sorptive preservation by solid iron phases controls C-reactivity in the sediment and, hence, the internal neutralization capacity of the lake system.
