[Fixation casts in skiing-traūmatology].

Abstract

Extensive experiences have shown that bandages of ultraviolet sensitive synthetic resin (LightCast II) offer important advantages compared to the conventional plaster cast. The special technique and details of procedure are described. The most important advantages are the light weight, water resistance (the patients can wash, shower and swim,), absolut stability is gained after 5--6 minutes under a ultraviolet lamp. Indications for the use of the fiberglass-cast are discussed.

Injuries in Swedish skydiving.

OBJECTIVE: To create a basis for prevention of modern skydiving injuries. DESIGN: Descriptive epidemiological study. SETTING: National total material. PATIENTS: Data on all reported injury events (n = 257) in Swedish skydiving 1999-2003 (total 539,885 jumps) were retrieved from the Swedish Parachute Association. Non-fatally injured skydivers were sent a questionnaire asking for event and injury details (response rate 89%), and supplementary hospital records were retrieved for the most serious injuries (n = 85). Human, equipment and environmental factors were assessed for risk. MAIN OUTCOME MEASUREMENTS: Frequency and severity of injuries. RESULTS: Incidence of non-fatal injury events was 48 per 100,000 jumps. The lower extremities, spine and shoulders were important regions of injury. The most serious injuries were experienced by licensed skydivers, but students in training had a higher injury rate and more often left the sport because of the injury. Of two student-training systems, one had an incidence less than half that of the other. CONCLUSIONS: A basis for prevention was created, showing a potential for reduction of frequency and severity of injuries with training and technical interventions.

Screening for catastrophic neck injuries in sports.

The cervical spine is prone to injury due to the structure of the articulating vertebrae at the level of C4-C6, where the spinal cord occupies more of the spinal canal. Cervical spine injuries can occur in all sports and all ages. Participation in contact sports certainly increases the possibility of cervical spine injuries. In screening for catastrophic neck injuries it is vital to examine incidence and injury surveillance statistics in sports. These data can help determine sport-specific preponderance of catastrophic injury. Screening methods for predisposition to catastrophic cervical spine injuries include a concise history, physical examination, and radiographic methods. There is currently no universal classification system utilizing imaging of the cervical spine that has been validated as a screening method for catastrophic neck injuries.
