[Simulation of a decoupling generalized predictive control algorithm for temperature-humidity system].

Abstract

A decoupling generalized predictive control algorithm was presented in this paper. This algorithm was proposed to control the temperature-humidity system of a practical air-conditioning environmental chamber. By introducing absolute humidity as an intermediate variable, temperature and humidity of the system can be decoupled. Then the two decoupled systems are controlled by generalized predictive control (GPC) algorithm at different sample rates. Many simulation experiments demonstrated the effectiveness of the algorithm. Besides, decoupling of temperature and humidity will be extremely helpful to the application of GPC on the real system. This is also the effective method to control the temperature and humidity system.

Outbreak of invasive Aspergillus infection in surgical patients, associated with a contaminated air-handling system.

An outbreak of Aspergillus infection at a tertiary care hospital was identified among inpatients who had amputation wounds, peritonitis, allograft nephritis, or mediastinitis. During a 2-year period, 6 patients were identified, all of whom had Aspergillus species recovered from samples from normally sterile sites. All cases clustered in the operating theater during a single 12-day period. To assess operating theater air quality, particle counts were measured as surrogate markers for Aspergillus conidia. A substantial increase in the proportion of airborne particles > or =3 microm in size (range, 3-fold to 1000-fold) was observed in many operating rooms. A confined space video camera identified moisture and contamination of insulating material in ductwork and variable airflow volume units downstream of final filters. No additional invasive Aspergillus wound infections were identified after the operating theater air-handling systems were remediated, suggesting that this unusual outbreak was due to the deterioration of insulating material in variable airflow volume units.

New problems to be solved for establishing closed life support system.

New test bed facilities such as Bioplex and CEEF have been constructed to test the new advanced technologies for solving the various problems as follows, (1) how to develop air content stabilization technologies with gas balance between the generation and the absorption by living organisms, (2) how to solve the mismatching between the assimilation rate of autotrophic organisms and the respiration rate of heterotrophic organisms, (3) how to balance the speed of the waste decomposition with the absorption speed of nutrient components in the sequential plant cultivation, (4) how to develop new nutrient adjusting subsystems for each plant species, (5) how to compensate the denitrification during the waste decomposition and anaerobic microbes in the nutrient solution.

Development and research program for a soil-based bioregenerative agriculture system to feed a four person crew at a Mars base.

For humans to survive during long-term missions on the Martian surface, bioregenerative life support systems including food production will decrease requirements for launch of Earth supplies, and increase mission safety. It is proposed that the development of "modular biospheres"--closed system units that can be air-locked together and which contain soil-based bioregenerative agriculture, horticulture, with a wetland wastewater treatment system is an approach for Mars habitation scenarios. Based on previous work done in long-term life support at Biosphere 2 and other closed ecological systems, this consortium proposes a research and development program called Mars On Earth(TM) which will simulate a life support system designed for a four person crew. The structure will consist of 6 x 110 square meter modular agricultural units designed to produce a nutritionally adequate diet for 4 people, recycling all air, water and waste, while utilizing a soil created by the organic enrichment and modification of Mars simulant soils. Further research needs are discussed, such as determining optimal light levels for growth of the necessary range of crops, energy trade-offs for agriculture (e.g. light intensity vs. required area), capabilities of Martian soils and their need for enrichment and elimination of oxides, strategies for use of human waste products, and maintaining atmospheric balance between people, plants and soils.
