Pectin-based microspheres: a preformulatory study.

Abstract

This paper reports on (a) the production of pectin microspheres and (b) the influence of different experimental parameters and ionic crosslinking on morphological and dimensional characteristics of pectin microspheres. Morphological and dimensional characteristics of pectin were analyzed as a function of the type of pectin, the dispersing phase, the stirring speed, and the emulsifying agent. Crosslinking by calcium chloride and the encapsulation of antibiotics (i.e., metronidazol and tetracycline) gave particles morphologically similar to empty particles but with slower swelling kinetic.

A versatile approach to affinitychromic polythiophenes.

The preparation of both postfunctionalizable and chromic poly[3-(N-succinimido-p-phenylcarboxylate(tetraethoxy)oxy)-4-methylthiophene] is reported. The N-hydroxysuccinimide ester side group can easily react with different amine-bearing molecules in the solid state to yield a library of new polythiophene derivatives. The resulting polymers can be dissolved in various solvents, and interactions between the side chains (ligands) and different analytes (targets) can be detected from modifications of both the side-chain and the backbone conformations resulting in important color changes (i.e., affinitychromism). This colorimetric polymeric transducer could therefore lead to highly valuable, versatile, and inexpensive tools for highthroughput screening and drug discovery.

Polarographic determination of propranolol in pharmaceutical formulation.

Propranolol was reacted with nitric acid to give nitropropranolol and was then measured in Britton-Robinson solutions in the pH range 2.0-12.0 by differential-pulse polarography. Nitropropranolol gave rise to a well-resolved differential-pulse polarographic peak at pH 2.0. A linear calibration graph in the range 5.0 x 10(-7)-5.0 x 10(-5) M and a detection limit of 5 nM was obtained. The relative standard deviation was 1.95% (n = 10) at 5 x 10(-6) M. The effect of common exceipient on the peak height was evaluated. The method was applied for the determination of the drug in the tablet dosage form.

Determination of minocycline by oxidative coupling and diazocoupling reactions in pharmaceutical formulations.

Simple and sensitive spectrophotometric methods (M(1)-M(4)) by the application of oxidative coupling and diazocoupling reactions for the assay of minocycline (MC) in pure form and pharmaceutical formulations have been described. Methods M(1) and M(2) involve the oxidative coupling reactions of MC with 3-methyl-2-benzothiozolinone hydrazone (MBTH) (method M(1), lambda(max) 440 nm) or 4-aminophenazone (4-AP) (method M(2), lambda(max) 520 nm) in the presence of periodate. Methods M(3) and M(4) are based on the formation of diazocoupling products of MC with diazotised p-nitroaniline (DPNA) (method M(3), lambda(max) 420 nm) or diazotised sulfanilic acid (DSAC) (method M(4), lambda(max) 420 nm). Regression analysis of Beer's law plot showed good correlation in the concentration range of 8-48, 20-120, 4-20 and 8-40 microg ml(-1) for methods A, B, C and D, respectively. The molar absorptivities fell within the range of 2.23 x 10(3)-1.51 x 10(4) l mol(-1) cm(-1). The recoveries range from 99.02 to 100.61%.
