Vitreous scissors and forceps.

Abstract

Vitreous scissors with bent blades and forceps of larger than usual dimension were developed for removal of inflexible membranes and intraocular foreign bodies.

Comparison of three permanent intraocular magnets.

A comparison was performed of three small-gauge, permanent, rare-earth, intraocular magnets to assist the posterior segment surgeon with the decision as to which magnet to purchase or to use in different clinical situations. The magnetic force was measured at varying distances from the instrument tip using a 1/8-inch steel ball as the test object. There were small differences in magnetic strength between the three instruments that may have clinical significance in certain situations. Two of the instruments had a retractable magnet within an outer sleeve, allowing for controlled attraction and release of a magnetic foreign body by the surgeon.

Periocular migration of an intraocular lens.

A woman presented with a painful eye 6 weeks after cataract extraction and intraocular lens implantation. In the past she had had a sector iridectomy for iris bombé caused by chronic anterior uveitis. On examination the three central corneal sutures were absent, whilst the medial and lateral sutures had broken and were protruding from the section. The eye was quiet and the section intact. Combined clinical and ultrasound examination failed to locate the intraocular lens. Four months postoperatively, while being fitted for contact lenses for the correction of aphakia, the intraocular lens appeared from the superior fornix.
