Abstract

Criminal cases in which a suspect or a victim has left his or her teeth marks on another person or on an inanimate object such as a candy bar, an apple, cheese or even a beer can seem to occur more frequently. Testifying to the similarity or dissimilarity of a suspect's dentition to the bite mark in question is probably the most unique contribution that forensic dentistry makes to the judicial inquiry. This is a grave responsibility because a defendant's life or freedom may depend on the testimony given by the forensic odontologist in court.

Unusual inflicted hot oil burns in a 7-year-old.

Pediatric burn injuries occur not infrequently as the result of abuse. While the majority of these burns are inflicted scald burns, those due to contact or contact/scald mechanisms may present diagnostic challenges. A child with unusual combined contact and scald burns caused by a metal spatula heated in hot cooking oil is described. The odd pattern of healed injury limited the initial diagnosis to inflicted healing burns. Despite the initial lack of disclosure, an inflicted etiology was supported by clearly delineated margins, macular lesions with hyper-pigmented rims and variegated central regions. Additional findings of numerous adult bites and bruises provided adjunctive support for an inflicted etiology. Aspects of this case are atypical for the usual demographics of a burn victim. This case extends the known presentations of inflicted contact/scald burns.

Adherence of forensic odontologists to the ABFO guidelines for victim evidence collection.

Certifying boards for different professions have the duty to help establish standards and guidelines for methodologies routinely performed within the discipline. For forensic dentists, this responsibility is placed upon the American Board of Forensic Odontology (ABFO). The purpose of this study was to examine whether board certified and noncertified forensic odontologists adhere to the ABFO Guidelines outlined in the collection of victim bitemark evidence. A questionnaire was developed to assess the compliance and attitudes towards the typical evidence collected, the photographic documentation, and the handling of the bite site injury. The results indicate the majority of the respondents in both representative groups routinely follow the guidelines set forth by the ABFO. The lack of personally photographing the bite injury on a consistent basis is an area of concern for all examiners. The photographic evidence is an instrumental part of the investigation and often cannot be utilized due to improper procedures being followed. The film type utilized, bite site impression techniques, and excision of any tissue samples remain an individual choice and vary significantly among each forensic odontologist.

Teeth grinding, tongue and lip biting in a 24-month-old boy with meningococcal septicaemia. Report of a case.

This paper describes the management of a 24-month-old boy who presented with self-inflicted trauma to his lower lip and tongue, and teeth grinding, 21 days after developing meningococcal septicaemia. A decision to observe and prescribe palliative therapy was made. Extraction of the lower right deciduous canine, which had become non-vital, possibly due to bruxism, was carried out.
