[Pathologic changes induced by sustained acceleration].

Abstract

This paper mainly reviewed sustained +Gz acceleration-induced pathologic changes in various organ systems. Some of them are reversible and some may result in damage. Degree of the pathologic changes are related to G levels, G onset rates, duration of G exposure and individual difference factors. With raise of aircraft performance, acceleration problem is becoming more and more serious. Aviation medical workers should pay good attention to these changes and the use of high performance anti-G measures in order to ensure safety and performance of the pilots.

On the dynamics of a spherical scaffold in rotating bioreactors.

We analyze the dynamics of a spherical scaffold in rotating bioreactors (or clinostats). The idealized clinostat environment consists of a purely rotational flow that is perpendicular to a gravitational field. We confirm through a detailed analytical study that lift effects considerably alter the position of the equilibrium point reached by the scaffolds in the (vertical) direction collinear to the gravitational field. This result holds for small particle and shear Reynolds numbers. Our analysis shows that the inertial lift effect is negligible in the horizontal direction. We show that for all rotations of practical interest, and for the range of particle Reynolds number smaller than unity, the vertical coordinate of the equilibrium point is strongly affected by consideration of lift effects. For light (heavy) particles, inclusion of lift in the formation forces the equilibrium position to be below (above) the horizontal plane that contains the axis of rotation. The equilibrium point for light particles is stable and therefore is observable experimentally. The equilibrium point for heavy particles is unstable. We also estimate the stress level applied to the scaffold and derive an algebraic expression that indicates that the stress level acting on the scaffold decreases with increasing shear Reynolds number.

Morphometric relationships of take-off speed in anuran amphibians.

Locomotory speed correlates with muscle mass (determining force and stride rate), limb length (stride rate and distance), and laterally compressed body trunk (force and stride distance). To delineate generalization of the locomotory-morphometric relationships specifically in anuran amphibians, we investigated take-off speed and the three morphological variables from seven species, Rana nigromaculata, R. rugosa, and Bombina orientalis, Eleuthrodectilus fitzingeri, E. diastema, Bufo typhonius, Colostethus flotator and Physalaemus pustulosus. The fastest jumper E. fitzingeri (3.41 m s(-1)) showed 2.49-fold greater speed than the slowest B. typhonius. Take-off speed correlated well with both thigh muscle mass relative to body mass and hindlimb length relative to snout-vent length (HL/SVL), but poorly correlated with the inter-ilial width relative to SVL. The best morphological predictor was HL/SVL (speed=-3.28+3.916 HL/SVL, r=0.968, P<0.0001), suggesting that anuran take-off speed is portrayed well with high gear and acceleration distance characterized by hindlimbs.

Sensitivity and reproducibility of accelerometry and heart rate in physical strain assessment during prosthetic gait.

Accelerometry and heart rate (HR) are frequently used indicators of physical strain during normal daily life. The present study focused on the sensitivity and reproducibility of accelerometry (body motility, the intensity of body movement measured with accelerometry) and HR (percentage maximal heart rate reserve, %HRR(max)) in the assessment of physical strain during walking in persons with a lower leg amputation, using persons without an amputation as reference. Ten patients with an amputation of the leg and ten comparison subjects performed, at an interval of 1 month, the same walking protocol three times. Subjects walked at a preferred speed and at fixed speeds. At their preferred walking speed, speed (0.63 vs 1.31 m s(-1), P=0.001), body motility [0.53 vs 0.91 (arbitrary unit), P=0.001] and %HRR(max) (42.5 vs 27.6, P=0.02) differed between the amputation group and the comparison group. At fixed walking speeds, only %HRR(max) differed between groups ( P</=0.002) and showed a session effect ( P=0.02). The relationship between body motility and %HRR(max) in the patient group was significantly different from that in the comparison group. It can be concluded that accelerometry is strongly related with walking speed, but not sensitive to differences and changes in economy, contrary to %HRR(max). The use of accelerometry as an indicator of the level of physical strain in persons with an amputation is not feasible. The added value of a calibration procedure has to be studied.
