Abstract

Imaging technology continues to advance and simplify the diagnosis of neurotologic pathology. Namely, high resolution magnetic resonance imaging has provided detailed evaluation of the internal auditory canal and membranous labyrinth. Conversely, the role of high resolution magnetic resonance imaging as a screening tool remains controversial. Functional imaging studies such as functional magnetic resonance imaging and single photon emission computed tomography are beginning to find significant roles in the evaluation of cochlear implant patients. General imaging principles and imaging strategies for specific temporal bone pathologies are also discussed.

A distinctive type of metaphyseal chondrodysplasia with characteristic thickening of the distal ulna and radius: possible metaphyseal chondrodysplasia-Rosenberg.

We report an 8-year-old boy with a distinctive form of metaphyseal chondrodysplasia (MCD). He presented with moderate disproportionate short stature and bony swelling of his wrists, knees, and ankles. There were severe metaphyseal abnormalities with a honeycomb appearance affecting the distal tibiae and fibulae, proximal tibiae, distal femurs, distal ulnae and radii, and both hands. His thoracolumbar spine was normal. Radiological examination of the mother's forearms revealed widening of the distal radii and short ulnae with hypoplastic distal ends. Rosenberg and Löhr [1986: Eur J Pediatr 145:40-45] reported a four-generational kindred in which affected members had thickening of the wrist proximal to the styloid process of the ulna and thickening of the dorsum sellae. Although many of the radiographic features of this patient are those of MCD-Rosenberg, the skeletal features of our patient do not appear to represent any known classified forms of MCD.

CT scout films: don't forget to look!

BACKGROUND: A lateral scout view of the head is always obtained when performing head computed tomography (CT). It is common knowledge that viewing the lateral scout view may provide additional information. For a variety of reasons, however, a careful review may not be performed routinely. OBJECTIVE: To illustrate the value of the lateral scout view, we present a series of representative cases. PATIENTS: Six patients with clinically relevant findings on the scout view. RESULTS: Most of the ancillary findings were in the upper cervical spine/neck, which is typically included on the lateral scout view. CONCLUSION: Careful evaluation of the scout view of the head CT, including the skull and neck, may yield valuable information, which may not be visualized on the axial CT images.

Pseudomass of the sternal manubrium in osteogenesis imperfecta.

Skeletal abnormalities such as hypertrophic callus formation and "popcorn" calcifications are rare radiological findings of osteogenesis imperfecta, causing tumor-like appearances on imaging. We report on a 7-year-old girl with osteogenesis imperfecta presenting with hepatomegaly and palpable lymphadenopathy in the left inguinal region on physical examination. Computed tomography examination revealed a high-density mass-like lesion of the manubrium sterni. Ultrasonography and a lateral roentgenogram of the chest verified that this was a pseudomass caused by a bowed sternal manubrium.
